¹Hear ye this word which I take up against you, even a lamentation, O house of Israel.

¹ ای مردم اسرائیل، به سوگنامه‌ای که برای شما می‌خوانم گوش دهید:

²The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is forsaken upon her land; there is none to raise her up.

² باکرهٔ اسرائیل فرو افتاده و هرگز برنخواهد خاست. او در زمین خود رها گشته، و ‌کسی نیست که به او کمک کند تا برخیزد.

³For thus saith the Lord GOD; The city that went out by a thousand shall leave an hundred, and that which went forth by an hundred shall leave ten, to the house of Israel.

³ خداوند متعال می‌فرماید: «از یک شهر اسرائیل یک‌هزار نفر به جنگ می‌روند، امّا تنها یکصد نفر زنده برمی‌گردند. از شهر دیگری صد نفر فرستاده می‌شوند، ولی فقط ده نفر زنده می‌مانند.»

⁴For thus saith the LORD unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live:

⁴ خداوند به مردم اسرائیل می‌فرماید: «مرا بطلبید تا زنده بمانید.

⁵But seek not Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beersheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nought.

⁵ به بیت‌ئیل برای عبادت نروید، در جلجال اجتماع نکنید و به شهر بئرشبع داخل نشوید، زیرا مردم جلجال تبعید می‌گردند و مردم بیت‌ئیل نابود می‌شوند.»

⁶Seek the LORD, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel.

⁶ در طلب خداوند باشید تا زنده بمانید، وگرنه غضب او مثل آتش شعله‌ور می‌شود و قوم اسرائیل را می‌سوزاند و مردم بیت‌ئیل را از بین می‌برد و کسی نمی‌تواند آن را خاموش سازد.

⁷Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the earth,

⁷ شما محکوم به فنا هستید، زیرا عدالت را پایمال می‌کنید و مردم را از حقّشان محروم می‌سازید.

⁸Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name:

⁸ کسی‌که ستارگان آسمان، ثریا و جبّار را آفرید، او که تاریکی را به صبح روشن و روز را به شب تبدیل می‌کند، او که آبهای دریا را جمع کرده بر زمین می‌باراند، نام او خداوند است.

⁹That strengtheneth the spoiled against the strong, so that the spoiled shall come against the fortress.

⁹ او نیرومندان را با قلعه‌هایشان نابود می‌سازد.

¹⁰They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.

¹⁰ شما از کسانی‌که پیرو عدالت و راستگو هستند، نفرت دارید.

¹¹Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them.

¹¹ بر مردم مسکین و فقیر ظلم می‌کنید و غلّه‌هایشان را بزور می‌گیرید، بنابراین در خانه‌هایی که از سنگهای خوش‌تراش بنا کرده‌اید، زندگی نخواهید کرد و از شراب تاکستانهای زیبایی که کاشته‌اید نخواهید نوشید،

¹²For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.

¹² زیرا من می‌دانم که گناهان زیاد و خطاهای بزرگی را مرتکب شده‌اید. به اشخاص درستکار آزار می‌رسانید، رشوه می‌گیرید و عدالت را از مردم مسکین بازمی‌دارید.

¹³Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time.

¹³ پس در این زمان بهترین کار سکوت است، زیرا که زمان بدی است.

¹⁴Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.

¹⁴ پس نیکویی کنید و از شرارت دست بکشید تا زنده بمانید. آنگاه خداوند، خدای متعال، چنانکه ادّعا می‌کنید، همراه شما و مددکار شما خواهد بود.

¹⁵Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

¹⁵ از بدی بپرهیزید و خوبی را دوست بدارید و در داوری عدالت را برقرار سازید. شاید خداوند قادر مطلق بر بازماندگان این قوم رحمت کند.

¹⁶Therefore the LORD, the God of hosts, the LORD, saith thus; Wailing shall be in all streets; and they shall say in all the highways, Alas! alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful of lamentation to wailing.

¹⁶ خداوند، خدای متعال می‌فرماید: «از تمام سبزه‌های شهر صدای ناله و شیون برمی‌خیزد و حتّی دهقانان دعوت می‌شوند تا با نوحه‌خوانان نوحه‌گری کنند.

¹⁷And in all vineyards shall be wailing: for I will pass through thee, saith the LORD.

¹⁷ در تاکستانها ناله و شیون برپا می‌شود، زیرا من برای مجازات شما می‌آیم.»

¹⁸Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light.

¹⁸ وای به حال شما که در آرزوی فرا رسیدن روز خداوند هستید. آن روز چه فایده‌ای برای شما خواهد داشت؟ زیرا در آن روز تاریکی را می‌بینید، نه روشنی را.

¹⁹As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.

¹⁹ شما مانند کسی می‌باشید که از شیری فرار کند و با خرسی روبه‌رو گردد. یا مانند کسی‌که به خانهٔ خود داخل شود و دست خود را بر دیوار بگذارد و مار او را بگزد.

²⁰Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?

²⁰ روز خداوند، تاریکی را ایجاد می‌کند و اثری از روشنی نخواهد بود. آن روز یک روز تاریک محض خواهد بود، نور و روشنایی به چشم نمی‌خورد.

²¹I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies.

²¹ خداوند می‌فرماید: «من از عیدهایتان بیزارم و از محافل مذهبی شما نفرت دارم.

²²Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.

²² قربانی‌های سوختنی و هدایای آردی شما را نمی‌پذیرم و به قربانی حیوانات چاقی که جهت شکرگزاری می‌آورید توجّهی ندارم.

²³Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.

²³ سرود حمد خود را به گوش من نرسانید. نوای چنگ شما را نمی‌شنوم.

²⁴But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.

²⁴ به عوض، بگذارید که عدالت مثل آب و انصاف مانند نهری همیشه در جریان باشد.

²⁵Have ye offered unto me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?

²⁵ «ای قوم اسرائیل، در مدّت چهل سالی که در بیابان بودید، آیا برای من قربانی و هدیه می‌آوردید؟ خیر، امّا اکنون به این دلیل که شما پیکره‌های سِكوّت، الههٔ پادشاهی و کیوان، خدای ستارهٔ خود را پرستش نموده‌اید، بنابراین هنگامی که من شما را به سرزمینی دور دست در آن طرف سرزمین دمشق به تبعید می‌فرستم، شما آن پیکره‌ها را با خود حمل خواهید کرد.» خداوند، خدای قادر مطلق چنین می‌فرماید.

²⁶But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves.

²⁶ خیر، امّا اکنون به این دلیل که شما پیکره‌های سِكوّت، الههٔ پادشاهی و کیوان، خدای ستارهٔ خود را پرستش نموده‌اید، بنابراین هنگامی که من شما را به سرزمینی دور دست در آن طرف سرزمین دمشق به تبعید می‌فرستم، شما آن پیکره‌ها را با خود حمل خواهید کرد.» خداوند، خدای قادر مطلق چنین می‌فرماید.

²⁷Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith the LORD, whose name is The God of hosts.
