¹A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.

¹ نام نیک از عطر گرانبها بهتر است و روز مرگ از روز تولّد.

²It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.

² رفتن به خانهٔ عزا بهتر از رفتن جشن به است. همه باید این را بدانیم که مرگ در انتظار ماست.

³Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.

³ اندوه بهتر از خنده است، زیرا غم آینهٔ دل را صفا می‌دهد.

⁴The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

⁴ شخص دانا دربارهٔ مرگ می‌اندیشد، ولی مرد احمق در پی عیش و نوش است.

⁵It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.

⁵ شنیدن انتقاد از شخص دانا بهتر از شنیدن تعریف از احمقان است.

⁶For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.

⁶ خندهٔ احمقان مانند صدای تَرَق‌تَرَق خار در آتشِ زیر دیگ بی‌معنی است.

⁷Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.

⁷ ظلم مرد حکیم را احمق می‌گرداند و رشوه دل را فاسد می‌سازد.

⁸Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

⁸ انتهای کار از شروع آن بهتر است و صبر و شکیبایی از غرور نیکوتر می‌باشد.

⁹Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

⁹ زود خشمگین نشوید، زیرا کسی‌که زود خشمگین می‌شود احمق است.

¹⁰Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.

¹⁰ هیچ‌گاه نپرسید: «چرا دوران گذشته بهتر از حالا بود؟» زیرا این‌گونه سؤال عاقلانه نیست.

¹¹Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.

¹¹ حکمت زیادتر از ارث ارزش دارد و هرکسی در این دنیا باید از حکمت برخودار باشد.

¹²For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.

¹² حکمت و ثروت پناهگاهی برای انسان هستند، ولی برتری حکمت این است که به انسان زندگی می‌بخشد.

¹³Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?

¹³ کارهای خدا را ببینید، چه کسی می‌تواند آنچه را که او کج ساخته است راست نماید؟

¹⁴In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.

¹⁴ در وقت خوشبختی خوش باشید و هنگام سختی به یاد آورید که خوبی و بدی از جانب خداست و شما نمی‌دانید که بعد از آن چه اتّفاقی رخ خواهد داد.

¹⁵All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.

¹⁵ در این زندگیِ بیهودهٔ خود بسیار چیزها دیده‌ام. یک شخص نیک در جوانی می‌میرد، امّا یک فرد شریر با وجود بدیهایش سالهای درازی زندگی می‌کند.

¹⁶Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself ?

¹⁶ پس بیش از حد نیک و با حکمت نباشید، مبادا خود را نابود کنید.

¹⁷Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?

¹⁷ بسیار شریر و احمق هم نباشید، مبادا مرگتان زود فرا رسد.

¹⁸It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.

¹⁸ در هیچ‌کدام آنها افراط نکنید. اگر خدا را تکریم نمایید در هر حال موفّق خواهید شد.

¹⁹Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.

¹⁹ حکمت، انسان را از ده فرمانده که در یک شهر زندگی می‌کنند، تواناتر می‌سازد.

²⁰For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.

²⁰ در دنیا هیچ‌کسی نیست که کاملاً نیک‌کردار باشد و گناه نکند.

²¹Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:

²¹ همهٔ حرفهایی را که می‌شنوی به دل نگیر، حتّی وقتی می‌شنوی که خدمتکارت به تو ناسزا می‌گوید.

²²For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.

²² خودتان می‌دانید که شما هم بارها به دیگران ناسزا گفته‌اید.

²³All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.

²³ من با حکمت خود تمام اینها را آزمودم و سعی کردم که دانا باشم، امّا به جایی نرسیدم.

²⁴That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?

²⁴ مفهوم زندگی را کسی نمی‌داند، زیرا خیلی عمیق و بالاتر از عقل ماست.

²⁵I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:

²⁵ پس وقت خود را صرف مطالعه و تحقیق نمودم و تصمیم گرفتم که حکمت را بیاموزم تا جواب سؤالات خود را پیدا کنم و برایم ثابت شد که شرارت و حماقت کار مردم احمق و دیوانه است.

²⁶And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

²⁶ فهمیدم که زن حیله‌گر از مرگ تلخ‌تر است، عشق او همچون دام و تله و بازوانش مانند کمند است. کسی‌که خدا از او راضی باشد می‌تواند از دام او نجات یابد، امّا شخص گناهکار گرفتارش می‌شود.

²⁷Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:

²⁷ حکیم می‌گوید: وقتی به دنبال حقیقت بودم به تدریج پی بردم که پاسخی وجود ندارد. اما دریافتم که در میان هزار مرد می‌توان یک مرد محترم پیدا کرد ولی در میان هزار زن یک زن قابل احترام هم وجود ندارد. پس به این نتیجه رسیدم که خدا انسان را نیک و درستکار آفرید، امّا او خود را به مسائل پیچیده گرفتار کرده است.

²⁸Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.

²⁸ پس به این نتیجه رسیدم که خدا انسان را نیک و درستکار آفرید، امّا او خود را به مسائل پیچیده گرفتار کرده است.

²⁹Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
