¹On that night could not the king sleep, and he commanded to bring the book of records of the chronicles; and they were read before the king.

¹ آن شب پادشاه نتوانست بخوابد. از این رو امر کرد که اسناد تاریخی سلطنتش را برایش بخوانند.

²And it was found written, that Mordecai had told of Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king's chamberlains, the keepers of the door, who sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus.

² قسمتی را خواندند مربوط به نقشهٔ قتل پادشاه از جانب بغتان و ترش و چگونگی آشکار شدن آن توسط مردخای بود؛ بغتان و ترش دو نفر از خواجه سرایان و از پرده داران کاخ پادشاه بودند.

³And the king said, What honour and dignity hath been done to Mordecai for this? Then said the king's servants that ministered unto him, There is nothing done for him.

³ پادشاه پرسید: «در مقابل این خدمت چه پاداش و افتخاری به مردخای داده شده است؟» خادمان در جواب گفتند: «هیچ پاداشی به او داده نشده است.»

⁴And the king said, Who is in the court? Now Haman was come into the outward court of the king's house, to speak unto the king to hang Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him.

⁴ پادشاه پرسید: «آیا از صاحب‌‌منصبان من کسی در اینجا هست؟» درست در همان لحظه هامان وارد کاخ شد تا از پادشاه بخواهد که مردخای را دار بزند.

⁵And the king's servants said unto him, Behold, Haman standeth in the court. And the king said, Let him come in.

⁵ پس خادمان جواب دادند: «هامان اینجاست و می‌خواهد شما را ببیند.» پادشاه گفت: «بگویید وارد شود.»

⁶So Haman came in. And the king said unto him, What shall be done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honour? Now Haman thought in his heart, To whom would the king delight to do honour more than to myself?

⁶ وقتی هامان وارد شد، پادشاه به او گفت: «من بسیار مایلم که یک نفر را احترام نمایم. به نظر تو برای چنین شخصی چه باید کرد؟» هامان با خود گفت: «به غیراز من چه کسی می‌تواند مورد عزّت و احترام پادشاه باشد.»

⁷And Haman answered the king, For the man whom the king delighteth to honour,

⁷ پس در جواب پادشاه گفت: «امر فرمایید جامهٔ شاهانه را که پادشاه در بر می‌کنند و اسبی را که اعلیحضرت سوار می‌شوند با جواهرات سلطنتی تزئین کرده، برای او بیاورند.

⁸Let the royal apparel be brought which the king useth to wear, and the horse that the king rideth upon, and the crown royal which is set upon his head:

⁸ آنگاه یکی از امرای عالیرتبه خود را بگمارید تا آن لباس مخصوص را به او بپوشاند، او را سوار اسب کرده در اطراف شهر بگرداند و ندا کند: 'بنگرید، کسی‌که پادشاه بخواهد او را احترام کند، این‌گونه پاداش می‌گیرد.'»

⁹And let this apparel and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king's most noble princes, that they may array the man withal whom the king delighteth to honour, and bring him on horseback through the street of the city, and proclaim before him, Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delighteth to honour.

⁹ پس پادشاه به هامان گفت: «برو هرچه زودتر لباسها و اسب را برای مردخای یهودی آماده کن. هرچه گفتی در مورد او انجام بده. او در کنار دروازهٔ ورودی کاخ نشسته است.»

¹⁰Then the king said to Haman, Make haste, and take the apparel and the horse, as thou hast said, and do even so to Mordecai the Jew, that sitteth at the king's gate: let nothing fail of all that thou hast spoken.

¹⁰ پس هامان لباس و اسب را آماده کرد و لباس شاهانه را به مردخای پوشانید. مردخای سوار بر اسب شد و هامان او را به میدان شهر برد و ندا می‌کرد: «بنگرید، کسی‌که پادشاه بخواهد او را احترام کند، این‌گونه پاداش می‌گیرد.»

¹¹Then took Haman the apparel and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, and brought him on horseback through the street of the city, and proclaimed before him, Thus shall it be done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honour.

¹¹ بعد مردخای به طرف دروازهٔ ورودی کاخ رفت، امّا هامان با اندوه فراوان درحالی‌که روی خود را از خجالت پوشانیده بود با عجله به خانهٔ خود برگشت.

¹²And Mordecai came again to the king's gate. But Haman hasted to his house mourning, and having his head covered.

¹² او هر آنچه را واقع شده بود، به همسر و دوستان خود گفت. آنگاه همسر و دوستان حکیم وی به او گفتند: «قدرت تو به نفع مردخای کاسته شده. او یهودی است و تو نمی‌توانی بر وی غالب آیی. او به طور قطع تو را شکست می‌دهد.» درحالی‌که آنها هنوز مشغول صحبت بودند، خواجه سرایان پادشاه با عجله وارد خانه هامان شدند تا او را به مهمانی استر ببرند.

¹³And Haman told Zeresh his wife and all his friends every thing that had befallen him. Then said his wise men and Zeresh his wife unto him, If Mordecai be of the seed of the Jews, before whom thou hast begun to fall, thou shalt not prevail against him, but shalt surely fall before him.

¹³ درحالی‌که آنها هنوز مشغول صحبت بودند، خواجه سرایان پادشاه با عجله وارد خانه هامان شدند تا او را به مهمانی استر ببرند.

¹⁴And while they were yet talking with him, came the king's chamberlains, and hasted to bring Haman unto the banquet that Esther had prepared.
