¹Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel;

¹ دشمنان مردم یهودا و بنیامین شنیدند کسانی‌که از تبعید بازگشته‌اند به بازسازی معبد بزرگ خداوند، خدای قوم اسرائیل مشغول شده‌اند.

²Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.

² پس ایشان به دیدن زرُبابل و سایر سران خاندانها رفته به آنها گفتند: «اجازه دهید ما هم در ساختن معبد بزرگ به شما کمک کنیم. ما همان خدایی را می‌پرستیم که شما پرستش می‌کنید و از زمانی که امپراتور آشور، اسرحدون، ما را به اینجا آورد، ما هم قربانی‌های خود را تقدیم خدای شما کرده‌‌‌ایم.»

³But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.

³ زرُبابل، یشوع و سایر سران خاندانها به ایشان گفتند: «شما هیچ سهمی در ساختن خانهٔ خدای ما ندارید. ما خودمان آن را همان‌طور که کوروش، شاهنشاه پارس دستور فرموده، خواهیم ساخت.»

⁴Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,

⁴ آنگاه مردمانی که در آن سرزمین زندگی می‌کردند سعی کردند با مأیوس ساختن و ترساندن یهودیان مانع ساختن معبد بزرگ شوند.

⁵And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

⁵ آنها حتّی به مأموران دولتی پارس رشوه می‌دادند تا برضد یهودیان کار کنند. آنها در طول سلطنت کوروش تا زمان داریوش به این کار ادامه دادند.

⁶And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

⁶ در ابتدای سلطنت خشایارشاه، دشمنان مردمی که در یهودیه و اورشلیم زندگی می‌کردند شکایاتی برضد آنها نوشتند.

⁷And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.

⁷ بار دیگر در زمان سلطنت اردشیر شاهنشاه پارس، بشلام، متردات و طبئیل و همدستان آنها نامه‌ای به خط آرامی به شاهنشاه نوشتند که به هنگام خواندن می‌بایست ترجمه می‌شد.

⁸Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:

⁸ همچنین رحوم فرماندار، و شمشایی منشی ایالت نامهٔ زیر را دربارهٔ اورشلیم به اردشیر شاهنشاه پارس نوشتند:

⁹Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,

⁹ «از طرف رحوم فرماندار، و شمشائی منشی ایالتی و دستیاران آنها، قضات و سایر مأمورانی که از اهالی ارک، بابل، شوشن و عیلام هستند،

¹⁰And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnapper brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time.

¹⁰ به اتّفاق دیگر مردمانی که توسط آشور بانیپالِ کبیر و ارجمند از وطن خودشان کوچ داده شده‌اند و در شهر سامره و سایر نقاط در استان غربی رود فرات، سکونت یافته‌اند.»

¹¹This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.

¹¹ این است متن نامه: «به اردشیر شاهنشاه پارس، از طرف خادمانش، مردم ساکن غرب رود فرات.

¹²Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.

¹² ما می‌خواهیم اعلیحضرت بدانند یهودیانی که از سایر سرزمینهای تابعه به اینجا آمده‌اند در اورشلیم ساکن شده‌اند و به بازسازی این شهر شریر و آشوبگر پرداخته‌اند. آنها به بازسازی دیوارهای آن مشغول شده‌اند و بزودی آن را تمام می‌کنند.

¹³Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.

¹³ اعلیحضرتا، اگر این شهر دوباره ساخته شود و دیوارهایش تکمیل شود، مردمش از پرداخت مالیات و باج و خراج خودداری خواهند کرد و درآمد خزانهٔ سلطنتی کاهش خواهد یافت.

¹⁴Now because we have maintenance from the king's palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king's dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;

¹⁴ حال چون ما خود را مدیون اعلیحضرت می‌دانیم، نمی‌خواهیم از شکوه وعظمت شما کاسته شود. بنابراین پیشنهاد می‌کنیم

¹⁵That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.

¹⁵ دستور فرمایید اسنادی که به وسیلهٔ اجداد شما نگاه‌ داری شده بررسی شود. اگر چنین تحقیقی به عمل آید، پی خواهید برد که این شهر همواره سرکش بوده است و از زمانهای قدیم همیشه برای پادشاهان و فرمانروایان استانها زحمت ایجاد کرده است. حکومت بر این مردم همیشه کار دشوای بوده و به همین دلیل این شهر ویران شده است.

¹⁶We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.

¹⁶ از این رو ما معتقدیم، اگر این شهر دوباره ساخته شود و دیوارهایش تکمیل گردد، اعلیحضرت دیگر قادر به ادارهٔ استان غربی رود فرات نخواهند بود.»

¹⁷Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.

¹⁷ شاهنشاه این پاسخ را فرستاد: «به رحوم فرماندار، و شیمشایی منشی ایالت و سایر دستیاران که در سامره و سایر نواحی غرب رود فرات زندگی می‌کنند. سلام.

¹⁸The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.

¹⁸ نامه‌ای که فرستاده بودید برای من ترجمه و خوانده شد.

¹⁹And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.

¹⁹ من دستور تحقیق دادم و معلوم شد که واقعاً اورشلیم از زمانهای قدیم علیه قدرت مرکزی شوریده و این شهر پر از مردم سرکش و خرابکار است.

²⁰There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.

²⁰ پادشاهان قدرتمندی در آنجا حکومت کرده‌اند و بر تمام استان غربی رود فرات فرمان رانده و مالیات باج و خراج گرفته‌اند.

²¹Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.

²¹ بنابراین شما خودتان دستوری صادر کنید و تا دستور بعدی از جانب من، از بازسازی شهر جلوگیری کنید.

²²Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?

²² این کار را فوراً انجام دهید، قبل از آن که زیان بیشتری به منافع من وارد شود.»

²³Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.

²³ به محض اینکه نامهٔ اردشیر شاهنشاه برای رحوم، شیمشایی و همدستانشان خوانده شد آنها با شتاب به اورشلیم رفتند و بزور مانع بازسازی شهر شدند. تا دومین سال سلطنت داریوش شاهنشاه پارس، کار بازسازی معبد بزرگ متوقّف شده بود.

²⁴Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

²⁴ تا دومین سال سلطنت داریوش شاهنشاه پارس، کار بازسازی معبد بزرگ متوقّف شده بود.
