¹Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.

¹ ای بنی‌اسرائیل، به کلام خداوند گوش بدهید. خداوند ساکنان این سرزمین را محاکمه می‌کند، زیرا در آنجا وفاداری، صداقت و خدا شناسی وجود ندارد.

²By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.

² بلکه نفرین، دروغ گویی، آدم‌کشی، دزدی، زناکاری و خونریزی وجود دارد.

³Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

³ بنابراین زمین خشک خواهد شد و همهٔ ساکنان آن همراه با حیوانات وحشی، مرغان هوا و حتّی ماهیان دریا از بین خواهند رفت.

⁴Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another: for thy people are as they that strive with the priest.

⁴ خداوند می‌فرماید: «هیچ‌کس نباید دیگری را سرزنش کند و او را گناهکار بداند. ای کاهنان، من شما را متّهم می‌کنم.

⁵Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother.

⁵ شب و روز مرتکب خطا و لغزش می‌شوید. انبیا هم بهتر از شما نیستند. من مادرتان، اسرائیل را نابود می‌کنم.

⁶My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

⁶ قوم من به‌خاطر اینکه مرا نمی‌شناسند، هلاک می‌شود. شما ای کاهنان نخواستید که مرا بشناسید و تعالیم مرا رد کردید، پس من هم شما را طرد می‌کنم و پسران شما را به عنوان کاهن نخواهم شناخت.

⁷As they were increased, so they sinned against me: therefore will I change their glory into shame.

⁷ «هرچقدر تعداد شما زیادتر شد، گناهان شما هم نسبت به من زیادتر شد. پس من هم جلال شما را به ننگ تبدیل می‌کنم.

⁸They eat up the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their iniquity.

⁸ کاهنان از گناهان مردم برای منفعت شخصی خود استفاده می‌کنند و بنابراین مردم را به گناه کردن تشویق می‌نمایند،

⁹And there shall be, like people, like priest: and I will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings.

⁹ پس هم کاهنان و هم مردم را به‌خاطر گناهانشان مجازات خواهم کرد.

¹⁰For they shall eat, and not have enough: they shall commit whoredom, and shall not increase: because they have left off to take heed to the LORD.

¹⁰ خواهید خورد، امّا سیر نخواهید شد؛ الههٔ باروری را پرستش خواهید کرد، امّا به تعدادتان افزوده نخواهد شد، زیرا مرا که خدای شما هستم، ترک کرده بُتها را پرستش می‌‌کنید.

¹¹Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart.

¹¹ «زنا، شراب کهنه و نو، عقل قوم مرا از بین برده است.

¹²My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God.

¹² آنها از یک تکه چوب بی‌جان راهنمایی می‌طلبند و از عصای چوبی می‌خواهند که از آینده به آنها خبر بدهد. دلبستگی به زناکاری، آنها را گمراه کرده است. بنابراین، نسبت به خدای خود خیانت کرده و به دنبال خدایان دیگر رفته‌اند.

¹³They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, because the shadow thereof is good: therefore your daughters shall commit whoredom, and your spouses shall commit adultery.

¹³ بر روی کوهها و بالای تپّه‌ها قربانی می‌کنند و در زیر درخت بلوط و هر نوع درخت دیگری که سایهٔ خوبی داشته باشد، بُخور می‌سوزانند. «در نتیجه دخترانتان به فاحشه‌گری و عروسانتان به زناکاری کشیده می‌شوند.

¹⁴I will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor your spouses when they commit adultery: for themselves are separated with whores, and they sacrifice with harlots: therefore the people that doth not understand shall fall.

¹⁴ امّا من دختران و عروسانتان را به‌خاطر کارهایشان مجازات نمی‌کنم، زیرا خود شما مردها با فاحشه‌های پرستشگاهها به جاهای خلوت می‌روید و به اتّفاق آنها برای بُتها قربانی می‌کنید. مردم نادان از بین خواهند رفت.

¹⁵Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Judah offend; and come not ye unto Gilgal, neither go ye up to Bethaven, nor swear, The LORD liveth.

¹⁵ «اگرچه مردم اسرائیل زنا می‌کنند، امّا ای یهودا، تو مرتکب چنین گناهی نشو. برای پرستش به جلجال و یا بیت‌آون نرو و به نام خدای زنده سوگند نخور.

¹⁶For Israel slideth back as a backsliding heifer: now the LORD will feed them as a lamb in a large place.

¹⁶ مردم اسرائیل مانند گوساله سرکش هستند، خداوند چگونه آنها را به چراگاههای سرسبز ببرد؟

¹⁷Ephraim is joined to idols: let him alone.

¹⁷ افرایم دلبستهٔ بُتها شده است، پس او را تنها به حال خود بگذار.

¹⁸Their drink is sour: they have committed whoredom continually: her rulers with shame do love, Give ye.

¹⁸ آنها بعد از آنکه شراب می‌نوشند، برای ارضای شهوت به دنبال ‌فاحشه‌ها می‌روند. آنها رسوایی را بر عزّت و شرافت ترجیح می‌دهند. بادی شدید آنها را خواهد برد و به‌خاطر قربانی‌هایی که برای بُتها کرده‌اند، رسوا خواهند شد.

¹⁹The wind hath bound her up in her wings, and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.

¹⁹ بادی شدید آنها را خواهد برد و به‌خاطر قربانی‌هایی که برای بُتها کرده‌اند، رسوا خواهند شد.
