¹Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate.

¹ خداوند می‌گوید: «ای بابل از تختت فرود بیا و در خاک و خاکستر روی زمین بنشین. روزی تو مثل دختری باکره بودی، شهری تسخیر نشده، امّا دیگر ظریف و لطیف نیستی! اکنون تو یک برده‌ای!

²Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.

² سنگ آسیاب را بچرخان و گندم را آرد کُن. حجاب خود را بردار، و لباسهای نفیست را از تن درآور! دامن خود را بالا بزن و از رود عبور کن!

³Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a man.

³ مردم تو را لخت خواهند دید، آنها تو را تحقیر شده و شرمسار خواهند دید. من انتقام خواهم گرفت و هیچ‌کس نمی‌تواند مانع من شود.»

⁴As for our redeemer, the LORD of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel.

⁴ خدای قدّوس اسرائیل، ما را آزاد می‌سازد، اسم او خدای متعال است.

⁵Sit thou silent, and get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called, The lady of kingdoms.

⁵ خداوند به بابل می‌گوید: «در سکوت و ظلمت بنشین؛ دیگر کسی تو را ملکهٔ جهان نخواهد خواند!

⁶I was wroth with my people, I have polluted mine inheritance, and given them into thine hand: thou didst shew them no mercy; upon the ancient hast thou very heavily laid thy yoke.

⁶ من نسبت به قوم خودم خشمگین بودم؛ با آنها چنان رفتاری کردم که گویی آنها دیگر قوم من نیستند. من آنها را به دست تو تسلیم کردم، تو به هیچ‌یک از آنها رحم نکردی؛ حتّی با پیران با خشونت رفتار کردی.

⁷And thou saidst, I shall be a lady for ever: so that thou didst not lay these things to thy heart, neither didst remember the latter end of it.

⁷ فکر می‌کردی که تو همیشه ملکه خواهی بود، به این چیزها توجهی نکردی و به عاقبت کار نیندیشیدی.

⁸Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children:

⁸ «بشنو، ای عاشقِ لذّتها، و ای آن کسی‌که فکر می‌کنی در امن و امان هستی؛ تو ادّعا می‌کنی که به بزرگی خدا هستی، و هیچ‌کس مانند تو نیست. فکر می‌کردی که هیچ‌وقت بیوه نخواهی شد و غم از دست دادن فرزندانت را نخواهی دید.

⁹But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine enchantments.

⁹ امّا در یک لحظه، تنها در یک روز، این هر دو برایت روی خواهد داد. با وجود تمام جادوگریهایت، شوهر و فرزندانت را از دست خواهی داد.

¹⁰For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me.

¹⁰ «تو به خودت و به نیرنگهایت اطمینان داشتی، و فکر می‌کردی کسی نمی‌تواند تو را ببیند. حکمت و دانش تو، تو را گمراه کرد، تو به خودت می‌گفتی، 'من خدا هستم، دیگر کسی مثل من نیست.'

¹¹Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know.

¹¹ بلا بر تو نازل می‌شود، و هیچ‌یک از جادوگریهای تو نمی‌تواند جلوی آن را بگیرد. ناگهان چنان ویرانی‌ای بر تو خواهد آمد، که آن را در خواب هم ندیده‌ای.

¹²Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.

¹² تمام سحر و افسونهای جادویی خود را که از دوران جوانی‌ات به کار می‌بردی حفظ کن. شاید آنها به تو کمکی بکنند؛ شاید بتوانی دشمنان خودت را با آنها بترسانی.

¹³Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.

¹³ با وجود تمام راهنمایی‌هایی که به تو می‌شود، فاقد قدرت هستی. بگذار منجّم‌ها و ستاره‌شناسان تو -آنهایی که می‌‌توانند ستاره‌ها را بررسی و مدارهای کهکشان را رسم، و هر ماه وقایع ماه بعد را پیشگویی کنند- بیایند و تو را از آنچه برایت اتّفاق می‌‌افتد، آگاه سازند.

¹⁴Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.

¹⁴ «آنها مانند پرکاهی هستند که آتش همهٔ آنها را خواهد سوزانید! آنها قادر نخواهند بود، حتّی خودشان را از شعله‌های سوزندهٔ آن نجات دهند. این آتش، آتش ملایم و مطلوبی نیست که بتوانند خودشان را با آن گرم کنند. ستاره‌شناسان و طالع‌بینانی که در تمام عمرت تو را راهنمایی می‌کردند، دیگر جُز این نمی‌توانند کاری برای تو انجام دهند. تمام آنها تو را ترک می‌کنند و به راه خود خواهند رفت، و هیچ‌یک از آنها باقی نمی‌ماند که تو را رهایی دهد.»

¹⁵Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, even thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee.

¹⁵ ستاره‌شناسان و طالع‌بینانی که در تمام عمرت تو را راهنمایی می‌کردند، دیگر جُز این نمی‌توانند کاری برای تو انجام دهند. تمام آنها تو را ترک می‌کنند و به راه خود خواهند رفت، و هیچ‌یک از آنها باقی نمی‌ماند که تو را رهایی دهد.»
