¹And king Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah.

¹ نبوکدنصر پادشاه بابل، صدقیا پسر یوشیا را به جای یهویاکین پسر یهویاقیم به عنوان پادشاه یهودا تعیین کرد.

²But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, did hearken unto the words of the LORD, which he spake by the prophet Jeremiah.

² امّا نه صدقیا به پیامی که از جانب خداوند داشتم گوش داد و نه درباریان و نه مردم عادی.

³And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Pray now unto the LORD our God for us.

³ صدقیا پادشاه یهوکل پسر شلمیا و صَفَنیای کاهن پسر معیسا را پیش من فرستاد تا از طرف تمام قوم به حضور خداوند، خدای ما دعا کنم.

⁴Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people: for they had not put him into prison.

⁴ در آن زمان من هنوز زندانی نشده بودم و می‌توانستم آزادانه میان مردم بروم.

⁵Then Pharaoh's army was come forth out of Egypt: and when the Chaldeans that besieged Jerusalem heard tidings of them, they departed from Jerusalem.

⁵ ارتش بابل شهر اورشلیم را در محاصره داشت، امّا وقتی شنیدند ارتش مصر از مرزهای مصر گذشته‌اند، آنها عقب‌نشینی کردند.

⁶Then came the word of the LORD unto the prophet Jeremiah saying,

⁶ آنگاه خداوند، خدای اسرائیل، به من گفت

⁷Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; Thus shall ye say to the king of Judah, that sent you unto me to enquire of me; Behold, Pharaoh's army, which is come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land.

⁷ تا به صدقیا بگویم: «ارتش مصر برای کمک به تو در حرکت است، امّا از وسط راه برخواهد گشت.

⁸And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire.

⁸ آنگاه بابلی‌ها برمی‌گردند، به شهر حمله می‌کنند، آن را می‌گیرند و به آتش می‌کشند.

⁹Thus saith the LORD; Deceive not yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us: for they shall not depart.

⁹ من، خداوند به تو اخطار می‌کنم که خود را فریب ندهی و تصوّر نکنی که بابلی‌ها دیگر نخواهند آمد، چون آنها خواهند آمد.

¹⁰For though ye had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire.

¹⁰ اگر تو حتّی بتوانی تمام ارتش بابل را شکست دهی به طوری که فقط مجروحان آنها در چادرهای خود بمانند، حتّی آن مجروحان هنوز قادر خواهند بود که برخیزند و تمام شهر را به آتش بکشند.»

¹¹And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh's army,

¹¹ ارتش بابل از اورشلیم عقب‌نشینی کرد چون ارتش مصر نزدیک می‌شد

¹²Then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to separate himself thence in the midst of the people.

¹² پس من اورشلیم را ترک کردم تا به سرزمین بنیامین بروم و سهم خود را از املاک خانواد‌گی خود بگیرم.

¹³And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans.

¹³ امّا وقتی به دروازهٔ بنیامین رسیدم، افسری به نام یرئیا پسر شلمیا و شلمیا پسر حننیا که مسئول پاسداران آنجا بود، مرا نگاه داشت و به من گفت: «تو به بابلی‌ها پناه می‌بری!»

¹⁴Then said Jeremiah, It is false; I fall not away to the Chaldeans. But he hearkened not to him: so Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes.

¹⁴ من در پاسخ گفتم: «نه این‌طور نیست! من به بابلی‌ها پناه نمی‌برم.» امّا یرئیا حرف مرا باور نکرد. او مرا دستگیر کرد و به حضور رهبران برد.

¹⁵Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prison.

¹⁵ آنها از دست من عصبانی بودند و دستور دادند مرا بزنند و مرا در خانه یوناتان -‌منشی دربار که خانه‌اش را به صورت زندان درآورده بودند‌- زندانی نمودند.

¹⁶When Jeremiah was entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had remained there many days;

¹⁶ مرا در سیاه چالی در زیرزمین آن خانه برای مدّت زیادی نگاه داشتند.

¹⁷Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the LORD? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.

¹⁷ مدّتی بعد صدقیای پادشاه کسی را به دنبال من فرستاد و او در کاخ سلطنتی به طور خصوصی از من پرسید: «آیا پیامی از جانب خداوند داری؟» جواب دادم: «آری پیامی دارم. تو به دست پادشاه بابل تسلیم خواهی شد.»

¹⁸Moreover Jeremiah said unto king Zedekiah, What have I offended against thee, or against thy servants, or against this people, that ye have put me in prison?

¹⁸ بعد پرسیدم: «من چه جرمی علیه تو و درباریانت و یا این مردم مرتکب شده‌ام که مرا به زندان انداخته‌ای؟

¹⁹Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land?

¹⁹ کجا هستند آن انبیای تو که به تو می‌گفتند که پادشاه بابل به تو و به کشور حمله نمی‌کند؟

²⁰Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.

²⁰ و اکنون، ای اعلیحضرت از تو خواهش می‌کنم به من گوش کن و هرچه می‌گویم انجام بده. خواهش می‌کنم مرا به زندان خانه یوناتان نفرست. اگر بفرستی حتماً در آنجا خواهم مرد.» پس صدقیای پادشاه دستور داد مرا در محوطهٔ کاخ زندانی کنند. من در آنجا ماندم و هر روز یک قرص نان از نانوایی به من می‌دادند تا ذخیره نان شهر تمام شد.

²¹Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers' street, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

²¹ پس صدقیای پادشاه دستور داد مرا در محوطهٔ کاخ زندانی کنند. من در آنجا ماندم و هر روز یک قرص نان از نانوایی به من می‌دادند تا ذخیره نان شهر تمام شد.
