¹There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.

¹ در زمین عوص مردی بود به نام ایّوب. او شخصی بی‌عیب و درستکار بود. از خدا می‌ترسید و از گناه دوری می‌کرد.

²And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.

² هفت پسر و سه دختر داشت.

³His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.

³ هفت هزار گوسفند، سه هزار شتر، پانصد جفت گاو، پانصد الاغ و همچنین خادمان زیادی داشت. او ثروتمندترین مرد مشرق زمین بود.

⁴And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

⁴ هریک از پسران ایّوب به نوبت در خانهٔ خود مهمانی برپا می‌کردند و خواهران خود را هم دعوت می‌نمودند که در مهمانی آنها شرکت کنند.

⁵And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

⁵ بعد از پایان مهمانی، ایّوب صبح زود برمی‌خاست و برای طهارت فرزندان خود قربانی تقدیم می‌کرد. او این کار را به این سبب می‌کرد که اگر فرزندانش ندانسته در پیشگاه خدا گناهی کرده باشند، گناهشان بخشیده شود.

⁶Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

⁶ روزی که فرشتگان در حضور خداوند جمع شده بودند، شیطان هم همراه آنها بود.

⁷And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

⁷ خداوند از شیطان پرسید: «تو از کجا آمده‌ای؟» شیطان جواب داد: «به دور زمین می‌گشتم و سیاحت می‌کردم.»

⁸And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?

⁸ خداوند از او پرسید: «آیا بندهٔ من ایّوب را دیدی؟ در تمام روی زمین کسی مانند او پیدا نمی‌شود. او از من می‌ترسد و از هرگونه کار بد، دوری می‌کند.»

⁹Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

⁹ شیطان گفت: «اگر خداترسی برای ایّوب فایده‌ای نمی‌داشت، آیا این کار را می‌کرد؟

¹⁰Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

¹⁰ تو همیشه از او و خانواده‌اش و اموالش پشتیبانی کرده‌ای و به هر کاری که می‌کند، برکت داد‌ه‌ای و آن‌قدر گلّه و رمه به او بخشیده‌ای که تمام سرزمین را پر کرده است.

¹¹But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.

¹¹ دارایی‌اش را از او بگیر، آنگاه خواهی دید که آشکارا به تو کفر خواهد گفت!»

¹²And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.

¹² خداوند فرمود: «بسیار خوب، همهٔ دارایی‌اش را در اختیار تو می‌گذارم. برو و هر کاری که می‌خواهی بکن، امّا به خودش ضرری نرسان!» پس شیطان از حضور خداوند بیرون رفت.

¹³And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:

¹³ روزی که پسران و دختران ایّوب در خانهٔ برادر بزرگشان مهمان بودند،

¹⁴And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:

¹⁴ قاصدی پیش ایّوب آمد و به او گفت: «گاوهایت شخم می‌کردند و ماده الاغهایت در کنار آنها می‌چریدند.

¹⁵And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

¹⁵ ناگهان سابی‌ها حمله کردند. تمام حیوانات را با خود بردند و خادمان تو را کشتند. تنها من زنده مانده، فرار کردم و آمدم تا تو را از ماجرا آگاه سازم.»

¹⁶While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

¹⁶ حرف قاصد هنوز تمام نشده بود که شخص دیگری آمد و گفت: «آتش خدا از آسمان فرود آمد و گوسفندان و شبانانت را از بین برد. فقط من سالم ماندم و آمدم تا به تو خبر بدهم.»

¹⁷While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

¹⁷ این شخص هنوز حرف می‌زد که قاصد دیگری از راه رسید و گفت: «سه دستهٔ کلدانیان بر ما حمله آوردند و شترهایت را ربودند و خادمانت را با شمشیر کشتند. تنها من توانستم که فرار کنم و بیایم به تو بگویم.»

¹⁸While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:

¹⁸ پیش از آن که این شخص سخنان خود را تمام کند، قاصد چهارم آمد و گفت: «پسران و دخترانت در خانهٔ برادر بزرگشان مهمان بودند

¹⁹And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

¹⁹ که ناگهان باد شدیدی از جانب بیابان وزید، خانه را بر سر فرزندانت خراب کرد و همه مردند. فقط من زنده ماندم و آمدم تا تو را آگاه کنم.»

²⁰Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,

²⁰ آنگاه ایّوب برخاست، لباس خود را پاره کرد، سر خود را تراشید و روی زمین به سجده افتاد

²¹And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

²¹ و گفت: «از رحم مادر برهنه به دنیا آمدم و برهنه هم از دنیا می‌روم. خداوند داد و خداوند گرفت، نام خداوند متبارک باد!» در تمام این احوال، ایّوب گناه نورزید و خدا را مقصّر ندانست.

²²In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.
