¹Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.

¹ یک روز قبل از عید فصح بود. عیسی فهمید كه ساعتش فرا رسیده است و می‌بایست این جهان را ترک كند و پیش پدر برود. او كه همیشه متعلّقان خود را در این جهان محبّت می‌‌نمود، آنها را تا به آخر محبّت كرد.

²And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;

² وقت شام خوردن بود و شیطان قبلاً دل یهودای اسخریوطی را برانگیخته بود كه عیسی را تسلیم نماید.

³Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;

³ عیسی كه می‌دانست پدر همه‌چیز را به دست او سپرده و از جانب خدا آمده است و به سوی او می‌رود،

⁴He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.

⁴ از سر سفره برخاسته، لباس خود را كنار گذاشت و حوله‌ای گرفته به كمر بست.

⁵After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

⁵ بعد از آن در لگنی آب ریخت و شروع كرد به شستن پاهای شاگردان و خشک‌كردن آنها با حوله‌ای كه به كمر بسته بود.

⁶Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?

⁶ وقتی نوبت به شمعون پطرس رسید او به عیسی گفت: «ای خداوند، آیا تو می‌خواهی پاهای مرا بشویی؟»

⁷Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.

⁷ عیسی در جواب گفت: «تو اكنون نمی‌فهمی من چه می‌کنم ولی بعداً خواهی فهمید.»

⁸Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.

⁸ پطرس گفت: «هرگز نمی‌گذارم پاهای مرا بشویی.» عیسی به او گفت: «اگر تو را نشویم، تو در من سهمی نخواهد داشت.»

⁹Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

⁹ شمعون پطرس گفت: «پس ای خداوند، نه تنها پاهای مرا بلكه دستها و سرم را نیز بشوی.»

¹⁰Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.

¹⁰ عیسی گفت: «کسی‌که غسل كرده است احتیاجی به شست‌وشو ندارد، به جز شستن پاهایش. او از سر تا پا تمیز است و شما پاک هستید، ولی نه همه.»

¹¹For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.

¹¹ چون او می‌دانست چه کسی او را تسلیم خواهد نمود، به همین دلیل گفت همهٔ شما پاک نیستید.

¹²So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?

¹² بعد از آنکه پاهای آنان را شست و لباس خود را پوشید و دوباره سر سفره نشست، از آنها پرسید: «آیا فهمیدید برای شما چه كردم؟

¹³Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.

¹³ شما مرا استاد و خداوند خطاب می‌کنید و درست هم می‌گویید زیرا كه چنین هستم.

¹⁴If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.

¹⁴ پس اگر من كه استاد و خداوند شما هستم پاهای شما را شسته‌ام، شما هم باید پاهای یكدیگر را بشویید.

¹⁵For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.

¹⁵ به شما نمونه‌ای دادم تا همان‌طور كه من با شما رفتار كردم شما هم رفتار كنید.

¹⁶Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.

¹⁶ یقین بدانید كه هیچ غلامی از ارباب خود و هیچ قاصدی از فرستندهٔ خویش بزرگتر نیست.

¹⁷If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

¹⁷ هرگاه این را فهمیدید، خوشا به حال شما اگر به آن عمل نمایید.

¹⁸I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.

¹⁸ «آنچه می‌گویم مربوط به همهٔ شما نیست. من کسانی را كه برگزیده‌ام می‌شناسم. امّا این پیشگویی کتاب‌مقدّس باید تحقّق یابد: 'آن‌کس كه با من نان می‌خورد، برضد من برخاسته است.'

¹⁹Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.

¹⁹ اكنون پیش از وقوع این را به شما می‌گویم تا وقتی واقع شود ایمان آورید كه من او هستم.

²⁰Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

²⁰ یقین بدانید هرکه، کسی را كه من می‌فرستم بپذیرد مرا پذیرفته است و هرکه مرا بپذیرد فرستندهٔ مرا پذیرفته است.»

²¹When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

²¹ وقتی عیسی این را گفت، روحاً سخت مضطرب شد و به طور آشكار فرمود: «یقین بدانید كه یکی از شما مرا تسلیم دشمنان خواهد كرد.»

²²Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.

²² شاگردان با شک و تردید به یكدیگر نگاه می‌کردند زیرا نمی‌دانستند این را دربارهٔ کدام‌یک از آنها می‌گوید.

²³Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.

²³ یکی از شاگردان كه عیسی او را دوست می‌داشت، پهلوی او نشسته بود.

²⁴Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.

²⁴ پس شمعون پطرس با اشاره از او خواست از عیسی بپرسد كه او دربارهٔ کدام‌یک از آنها صحبت می‌کند.

²⁵He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?

²⁵ بنابراین آن شاگرد به عیسی نزدیكتر شده از او پرسید: «ای خداوند، او كیست؟»

²⁶Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.

²⁶ عیسی پاسخ داد: «من این تکهٔ نان را به داخل كاسه فرو می‌برم و به او می‌دهم، او همان شخص است.» پس وقتی تكهٔ نان را به داخل كاسه فرو برد، آن را به یهودا پسر شمعون اسخریوطی داد.

²⁷And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.

²⁷ همین‌که یهودا لقمه را گرفت شیطان وارد وجود او شد. عیسی به او گفت: «آنچه را می‌کنی زودتر بكن.»

²⁸Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.

²⁸ ولی از کسانی‌که بر سر سفره بودند هیچ‌کس نفهمید منظور او از این سخن چه بود.

²⁹For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.

²⁹ بعضی گمان كردند كه چون یهودا مسئول كیسهٔ پول بود عیسی به او می‌گوید كه هرچه برای عید لازم دارند، خریداری نماید و یا چیزی به فقرا بدهد.

³⁰He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.

³⁰ به محض اینكه یهودا لقمه را گرفت بیرون رفت و شب بود.

³¹Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.

³¹ وقتی یهودا بیرون رفت، عیسی گفت: «اكنون پسر انسان جلال می‌یابد

³²If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.

³² و اگر خدا به وسیلهٔ او جلال یابد، خدا نیز او را جلال خواهد داد و این جلال بزودی شروع می‌شود.

³³Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.

³³ ای فرزندان من، زمانی كوتاه با شما هستم. آنگاه به دنبال من خواهید گشت و همان‌طور كه به یهودیان گفتم اكنون به شما هم می‌گویم، آن جایی‌که من می‌روم شما نمی‌توانید بیایید.

³⁴A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

³⁴ به شما فرمان تازه‌ای می‌دهم: یكدیگر را دوست بدارید، همان‌طور که من شما را دوست داشته‌ام شما نیز یکدیگر را دوست بدارید.

³⁵By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

³⁵ اگر نسبت به یكدیگر محبّت داشته باشید، همه خواهند فهمید كه شاگردان من هستید.»

³⁶Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.

³⁶ شمعون پطرس به او گفت: «ای خداوند، كجا می‌روی؟» عیسی پاسخ داد: «جایی‌که می‌روم تو حالا نمی‌توانی به دنبال من بیایی، امّا بعدها خواهی آمد.»

³⁷Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.

³⁷ پطرس گفت: «ای خداوند چرا نمی‌توانم همین حالا به دنبال تو بیایم؟ من حاضرم جان خود را به‌خاطر تو بدهم.» عیسی به او جواب داد: «آیا حاضری جان خود را به‌خاطر من بدهی؟ یقین بدان كه پیش از بانگ خروس سه بار خواهی گفت كه مرا نمی‌شناسی.»

³⁸Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.

³⁸ عیسی به او جواب داد: «آیا حاضری جان خود را به‌خاطر من بدهی؟ یقین بدان كه پیش از بانگ خروس سه بار خواهی گفت كه مرا نمی‌شناسی.»
