¹After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

¹ بعد از آن عیسی برای یکی از عیدهای یهود به اورشلیم رفت.

²Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.

² در اورشلیم نزدیک دروازه‌ای معروف به دروازهٔ گوسفند استخری با پنج رواق وجود دارد كه به زبان عبری آن را بیت حسدا می‌گویند.

³In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.

³ در آنجا عدّهٔ زیادی از بیماران، نابینایان لنگان و مفلوجان دراز كشیده [و منتظر حركت آب بودند

⁴For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.

⁴ زیرا هر چند وقت یک‌بار فرشتهٔ خداوند به استخر داخل می‌شد و آب را به حركت در می‌آورد و اولین بیماری كه بعد از حركت آب به استخر داخل می‌گردید از هر مرضی كه داشت، شفا می‌یافت.]

⁵And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.

⁵ در میان آنها مردی دیده می‌شد كه سی و هشت سال بیمار بود.

⁶When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?

⁶ وقتی عیسی او را در آنجا خوابیده دید و دانست كه مدّت درازی است كه بیمار می‌باشد، از او پرسید: «آیا می‌خواهی خوب و سالم شوی؟»

⁷The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.

⁷ آن مریض پاسخ داد: «ای آقا، وقتی آب به حركت می‌آید کسی نیست كه به من كمک كند و مرا در استخر بیاندازد؛ تا من از جایم حركت می‌کنم، شخص دیگری پیش از من به داخل می‌رود.»

⁸Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.

⁸ عیسی به او گفت: «بلند شو، بسترت را بردار و برو.»

⁹And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.

⁹ آن مرد فوراً شفا یافت و بستر خود را برداشت و به راه افتاد. آن روز، روز سبت بود.

¹⁰The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.

¹⁰ به همین علّت یهودیان به مردی كه شفا یافته بود گفتند: «امروز روز سبت است، تو اجازه نداری بستر خود را حمل نمایی.»

¹¹He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.

¹¹ او در جواب ایشان گفت: «آن کسی‌که مرا شفا داد به من گفت: 'بسترت را بردار و برو.'»

¹²Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?

¹² از او پرسیدند: «چه شخصی به تو گفت بسترت را بردار و برو؟»

¹³And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.

¹³ ولی آن مردی كه شفا یافته بود، او را نمی‌شناخت؛ زیرا آن محل پر از جمعیّت بود و عیسی از آنجا رفته بود.

¹⁴Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

¹⁴ بعد از این جریان عیسی او را در معبد بزرگ یافته به او گفت: «اكنون كه شفا یافته‌ای دیگر گناه نكن، مبادا به وضع بدتری دچار شوی.»

¹⁵The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.

¹⁵ آن مرد رفت و به یهودیان گفت: «کسی‌که مرا شفا داد عیسی است.»

¹⁶And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.

¹⁶ چون عیسی در روز سبت این كارها را می‌کرد، یهودیان به اذیّت و آزار او پرداختند.

¹⁷But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.

¹⁷ امّا عیسی به آنان گفت: «پدرم هنوز كار می‌کند و من هم كار می‌کنم.»

¹⁸Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

¹⁸ این سخن، یهودیان را در كشتن او مصمّم‌تر ساخت. چون او نه تنها سبت را می‌شکست، بلكه خدا را پدر خود می‌خواند و به این طریق خود را با خدا برابر می‌ساخت.

¹⁹Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

¹⁹ عیسی در جواب آنان گفت: «یقین بدانید كه پسر نمی‌تواند از خود کاری انجام دهد مگر آنچه كه می‌‏بیند پدر انجام می‌دهد. هرچه پدر می‌کند پسر هم می‌کند،

²⁰For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.

²⁰ زیرا پدر پسر را دوست دارد و هرچه انجام دهد، به پسر نیز نشان می‌دهد و كارهای بزرگتر از این هم به او نشان خواهد داد تا شما تعجّب كنید،

²¹For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.

²¹ زیرا همان‌طور كه پدر مردگان را زنده می‌کند و به آنان حیات می‌بخشد، پسر هم هرکه را بخواهد زنده می‌کند.

²²For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:

²² پدر بر هیچ‌کس داوری نمی‌کند، او تمام داوری را به پسر سپرده است،

²³That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.

²³ تا آنكه همه، همان‌طور كه پدر را احترام می‌کنند، پسر را نیز احترام نمایند. کسی‌که به پسر بی‌حرمتی كند، به پدر كه فرستندهٔ اوست بی‌حرمتی كرده است.

²⁴Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

²⁴ «یقین بدانید، هرکه سخنان مرا بشنود و به فرستندهٔ من ایمان آورد، حیات جاودانی دارد و هرگز محكوم نخواهد شد، بلكه از مرگ گذشته و به حیات رسیده است.

²⁵Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

²⁵ یقین بدانید كه زمانی خواهد آمد، و در واقع آن زمان شروع شده است، كه مردگان صدای پسر خدا را خواهند شنید و هرکه بشنود زنده خواهد شد.

²⁶For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

²⁶ زیرا همان‌طور كه پدر منشأ حیات است، به پسر هم این قدرت را بخشیده است تا منشاء حیات باشد.

²⁷And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

²⁷ و به او اختیار داده است كه داوری نماید، زیرا پسر انسان است.

²⁸Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

²⁸ از این تعجّب نكنید، زیرا زمانی خواهد آمد كه همهٔ مردگان صدای او را خواهند شنید

²⁹And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

²⁹ و از قبرهای خود بیرون خواهند آمد: نیكوكاران برای حیات خواهند برخواست و گناهكاران برای محکومیّت.

³⁰I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

³⁰ «من از خود نمی‌توانم کاری انجام دهم بلكه طبق آنچه كه می‌شنوم قضاوت می‌کنم و قضاوت من عادلانه است، زیرا در پی انجام خواسته‌های خود نیستم، بلكه انجام میل پدری كه مرا فرستاده است.

³¹If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

³¹ «اگر من دربارهٔ خودم شهادت بدهم، شهادت من اعتباری ندارد،

³²There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

³² ولی شخص دیگری هست كه دربارهٔ من شهادت می‌دهد و می‌دانم كه شهادت او دربارهٔ من معتبر است.

³³Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.

³³ شما قاصدانی پیش یحیی فرستادید و او به حقیقت شهادت داد.

³⁴But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.

³⁴ من به شهادت انسان نیازی ندارم بلكه به‌خاطر نجات شما این سخنان را می‌گویم.

³⁵He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

³⁵ یحیی مانند چراغی بود كه می‌سوخت و می‌درخشید و شما مایل بودید، برای مدّتی در نور او شادی كنید.

³⁶But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

³⁶ امّا من شاهدی بزرگتر از یحیی دارم: كارهایی كه پدر به من سپرده است تا انجام دهم، بر این حقیقت شهادت می‌دهند كه پدر مرا فرستاده است.

³⁷And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

³⁷ پدری كه مرا فرستاد خودش بر من شهادت داده است. شما هرگز نه او را دیده‌اید و نه صدایش را شنیده‌اید

³⁸And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.

³⁸ و كلام او در دلهای شما جایی ندارد، زیرا به آن کسی‌که فرستاده است، ایمان نمی‌آورید.

³⁹Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

³⁹ کتاب‌مقدّس را مطالعه می‌نمایید، چون خیال می‌کنید كه در آن حیات جاودان خواهید یافت. درحالی‌که كتاب دربارهٔ من شهادت می‌دهد،

⁴⁰And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

⁴⁰ شما نمی‌خواهید پیش من بیایید تا حیات بیابید.

⁴¹I receive not honour from men.

⁴¹ «من از مردم توقّع احترام ندارم.

⁴²But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.

⁴² من شما را می‌شناسم و می‌دانم كه خدا را از دل دوست ندارید.

⁴³I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

⁴³ من به نام پدر خود آمده‌ام و شما مرا نمی‌پذیرید، ولی اگر کسی خودسرانه بیاید از او استقبال خواهید كرد.

⁴⁴How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

⁴⁴ شما كه طالب احترام از یكدیگر هستید و به عزّت و احترامی كه از جانب خدای یكتا می‌آید توجّهی ندارید، چگونه می‌توانید ایمان بیاورید؟

⁴⁵Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.

⁴⁵ گمان نكنید كه من در پیشگاه پدر، شما را متّهم خواهم ساخت، کسی دیگر، یعنی همان موسی كه به او امیدوار هستید، شما را متّهم می‌نماید.

⁴⁶For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me.

⁴⁶ اگر شما به موسی ایمان می‌داشتید به من نیز ایمان می‌آوردید، زیرا او دربارهٔ من نوشته است. امّا اگر به نوشته‌های او ایمان ندارید، چگونه گفتار مرا باور خواهید كرد؟»

⁴⁷But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

⁴⁷ امّا اگر به نوشته‌های او ایمان ندارید، چگونه گفتار مرا باور خواهید كرد؟»
