¹And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying,

¹ بار دیگر خدا به یونس فرمود:

²Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.

² «به نینوا، آن شهر بزرگ برو و پیامی را که به تو می‌گویم به آنها اعلام کن.»

³So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.

³ یونس اطاعت کرد و به نینوا رفت. نینوا شهر بسیار بزرگی بود؛ به طوری که به اندازهٔ سه روز پیاده روی وسعت داشت.

⁴And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

⁴ یونس وارد شهر شد و پس از یک روز راه پیمایی اعلام کرد که بعد از چهل روز نینوا نابود خواهد شد.

⁵So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.

⁵ مردم نینوا پیام خدا را پذیرفتند و همگی روزه گرفته و از بزرگ و کوچک، به علامت توبه، پلاس پوشیدند.

⁶For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

⁶ وقتی پادشاه نینوا پیام را شنید، از تخت خود پایین آمد، ردای خود را کند و پلاس پوشید و روی خاکستر نشست.

⁷And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:

⁷ سپس از طرف پادشاه و بزرگان فرمانی صادر شد و در همه‌جا اعلام کردند که همهٔ مردم و تمامی گاوان و گوسفندان چیزی نخورند و نیاشامند.

⁸But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.

⁸ همهٔ مردم و حیوانات باید پلاس بپوشند و نزد خدا گریه و زاری کنند و همه از راه بد خود بازگردند و از ظلم دست بکشند و توبه کنند.

⁹Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?

⁹ شاید خدا تصمیم خود را عوض کند و از خشم خود بازگردد و ما را هلاک نسازد. چون خدا کار آنان را دید و مشاهده کرد که آنها از کارهای زشت خود دست کشیده و توبه کرده‌اند، از تصمیم خود منصرف شد و همان‌طور که قبلاً فرموده بود، آنها را هلاک نکرد.

¹⁰And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

¹⁰ چون خدا کار آنان را دید و مشاهده کرد که آنها از کارهای زشت خود دست کشیده و توبه کرده‌اند، از تصمیم خود منصرف شد و همان‌طور که قبلاً فرموده بود، آنها را هلاک نکرد.
