¹Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

¹ پس خداوند بعضی از این اقوام را در آن سرزمین باقی گذاشت تا اسرائیلیانی که طعم جنگ با کنعانیان را نچشیده بودند، آزمایش کند.

²Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;

² و در عین حال خداوند می‌خواست که به این نسل جوان فرصتی بدهد تا فنون جنگی را یاد بگیرند.

³Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baalhermon unto the entering in of Hamath.

³ قبایلی که باقی ماندند، عبارت بودند از: پنج شهر فلسطینیان، تمام کنعانیان، صیدونیان و حویان که در کوههای لبنان از بعل حرمون تا گذرگاه حمات زندگی می‌کردند.

⁴And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

⁴ آنها برای آزمایش بنی‌اسرائیل باقی ماندند تا معلوم شود که آیا قوم اسرائیل احکام خداوند را که به وسیلهٔ موسی به اجدادشان داده شده بود، بجا می‌آورند یا نه.

⁵And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:

⁵ پس بنی‌اسرائیل در بین کنعانیان، حِتّیان، اموریان، فرزیان، حویان و یبوسیان زندگی کردند.

⁶And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

⁶ دختران آنها را برای پسران خود گرفتند و دختران خود را به پسران آنها دادند. و خدایان ایشان را پرستش کردند.

⁷And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves.

⁷ باز بنی‌اسرائیل، خداوند خدای خویش را فراموش کردند و دست به کارهایی زدند که گناه بود و بُتهای بعل و اشتاروت را پرستش نمودند.

⁸Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushanrishathaim eight years.

⁸ آنگاه آتش خشم خداوند بر بنی‌اسرائیل افروخته شد و آنها را به دست کوشان رشتعایم، پادشاه بین‌النهرین سپرد تا مغلوب شوند و او مدّت هشت سال بر آنها حکومت می‌کرد.

⁹And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.

⁹ امّا وقتی مردم اسرائیل به درگاه خداوند ناله و زاری نمودند، خداوند رهاننده‌ای برای ایشان فرستاد که عتنئیل پسر قناز برادر کوچکتر کالیب بود.

¹⁰And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim.

¹⁰ روح خداوند بر عتنئیل قرار گرفت و او بنی‌اسرائیل را رهبری کرد. او به جنگ رفت و با کمک خداوند، کوشان رشتعایم پادشاه بین‌النهرین را شکست داد.

¹¹And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

¹¹ در آن سرزمین مدّت چهل سال آرامش برقرار بود و بعد عتنئیل پسر قناز فوت کرد.

¹²And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.

¹² بار دیگر مردم اسرائیل به ضد خداوند شرارت ورزیدند و خداوند، عجلون پادشاه موآب را بر آنها چیره گردانید.

¹³And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.

¹³ عجلون با عمونیان و عمالیقیان متّحد شده، اسرائیل را شکست داد و شهر اریحا را تصرّف کردند.

¹⁴So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

¹⁴ و عجلون پادشاه موآب مدّت هجده سال بر اسرائیل حکومت کرد.

¹⁵But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.

¹⁵ وقتی مردم اسرائیل پیش خداوند زاری کردند، خداوند باز نجات‌دهنده‌ای برای ایشان فرستاد. نام او ایهود، پسر جیرا، از طایفهٔ بنیامین و مردی چپ دست بود. بنی‌اسرائیل باج خود را توسط ایهود برای عجلون فرستادند.

¹⁶But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.

¹⁶ ایهود برای خود یک خنجر دودمه، به طول پنجاه سانتیمتر ساخت و آن را در زیر لباسش، بالای ران راست خود پنهان نمود.

¹⁷And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.

¹⁷ بعد از آن که باج را به عجلون که بسیار چاق بود تقدیم کرد،

¹⁸And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.

¹⁸ سپس همراهان خود را که باج را حمل می‌کردند روانه نموده،

¹⁹But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.

¹⁹ خودش از معدن سنگ که در جلجال بود، نزد عجلون پادشاه آمد و گفت: «من یک پیام محرمانه برای تو آورده‌ام.» پادشاه فوراً کسانی را که در حضورش بودند، بیرون فرستاد.

²⁰And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlor, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.

²⁰ در آن وقت، پادشاه در کاخ تابستانی و در اتاق مخصوص خود نشسته بود. ایهود به او نزدیک شد و گفت: «من پیامی از جانب خدا برایت آورده‌ام.» پادشاه از جای خود برخاست.

²¹And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:

²¹ آنگاه ایهود با دست چپ خود خنجر را از زیر لباس کشید و به شکم او فرو کرد.

²²And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.

²² خنجر تا دسته در شکمش فرورفت و چربی آن، تیغ خنجر را پوشانید و کثافات از شکمش بیرون ریخت. ایهود خنجر را از شکم او بیرون نکشید.

²³Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlor upon him, and locked them.

²³ سپس در را به روی او قفل کرد و خودش از راه بالاخانه گریخت.

²⁴When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlor were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.

²⁴ پس از رفتن ایهود، وقتی خدمتکاران پادشاه آمدند و دیدند که در اتاق قفل است، فکر کردند که او به دستشویی رفته است.

²⁵And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlor; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.

²⁵ امّا چون انتظارشان طولانی شد، کلید آورده در را باز کردند و دیدند که پادشاه‌شان بر روی زمین افتاده است.

²⁶And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.

²⁶ هنگامی‌که خدمتکاران پادشاه انتظار می‌کشیدند، ایهود از معدن سنگ گذشت و صحیح و سالم به سَعیرت رسید.

²⁷And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.

²⁷ وقتی به کوهستان افرایم آمد، شیپور را به صدا درآورد. مردم اسرائیل به دور او جمع شدند و سپس از کوهستان با او رفتند و ایهود آنها را رهبری می‌کرد.

²⁸And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.

²⁸ آنگاه به آنها گفت: «به دنبال من بیایید، زیرا خداوند دشمنانتان، موآبیان را به دست شما داده است.» پس آنها به دنبال او رفتند و گذرگاههای رود اردن را به روی مردم موآب بستند و به هیچ‌کس اجازهٔ عبور ندادند.

²⁹And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valor; and there escaped not a man.

²⁹ آنها ده هزار نفر از مردم موآب را که همه مردان نیرومند و جنگی بودند، به قتل رساندند و هیچ‌کس نتوانست فرار کند.

³⁰So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.

³⁰ به این ترتیب، موآبیان به دست مردم اسرائیل مغلوب شدند و مدّت هشتاد سال، صلح در آن سرزمین برقرار شد. بعد از ایهود رهبر دیگری، به نام شَمجَر پسر عَنات روی کار آمد که با کشتن ششصد نفر از فلسطینیان با یک چوب گاورانی، قوم اسرائیل را نجات داد.

³¹And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.

³¹ بعد از ایهود رهبر دیگری، به نام شَمجَر پسر عَنات روی کار آمد که با کشتن ششصد نفر از فلسطینیان با یک چوب گاورانی، قوم اسرائیل را نجات داد.
