¹Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,

¹ تقدیم به عالیجناب تئوفیلوس: تا به حال نویسندگان بسیاری به نوشتن شرح وقایعی كه در بین ما رخ داده است، اقدام کرده‌اند

²Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;

² و آنچه را كه به وسیلهٔ شاهدان عینی اوّلیه و اعلام کنندگان آن پیام به ما رسیده است به قلم آورده‌اند.

³It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,

³ من نیز به نوبهٔ خود، به عنوان کسی‌که جریان كامل این وقایع را جزء به جزء مطالعه و بررسی كرده است، صلاح دیدم كه این پیشامدها را به ترتیب تاریخ وقوع برای تو بنویسم

⁴That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.

⁴ تا به حقیقت همهٔ مطالبی كه از آن اطّلاع یافته‌ای، پی ببری.

⁵THERE was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

⁵ در زمان سلطنت هیرودیس، پادشاه یهودیه، كاهنی به نام زكریا از افراد گروه ابیا، زندگی می‌کرد. همسر او نیز از خاندان هارون بود و الیزابت نام داشت.

⁶And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

⁶ این دو نفر در نظر خدا درستكار بودند و بدون کوتاهی، كلّیهٔ احكام و دستورات خداوند را رعایت می‌کردند.

⁷And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

⁷ امّا فرزندی نداشتند زیرا الیزابت نازا بود و هر دو سالخورده بودند.

⁸And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,

⁸ چون نوبت خدمت روزانه در معبد بزرگ به گروه زكریا رسید، او به عنوان كاهن مشغول انجام وظایف خود شد.

⁹According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

⁹ ‌طبق رسوم كاهنان قرعه به نام او درآمد كه به داخل جایگاه مقدّس در معبد بزرگ وارد شود و بُخور بسوزاند.

¹⁰And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

¹⁰ در وقت سوزاندن بُخور، تمام جماعت در بیرون ایستاده و دست به دعا برداشته بودند.

¹¹And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

¹¹ در آنجا فرشتهٔ خداوند به او ظاهر شد و در سمت راست آتشدان بُخور ایستاد.

¹²And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

¹² زكریا از دیدن این منظره تكانی خورد و ترسید.

¹³But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

¹³ امّا فرشته به او گفت: «ای زكریا نترس. دعاهای تو مستجاب شده و همسرت الیزابت برای تو پسری خواهد زایید و او را یحیی خواهی نامید.

¹⁴And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

¹⁴ شادی و سرور نصیب تو خواهد بود و بسیاری از تولّد او شادمان خواهند شد.

¹⁵For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

¹⁵ زیرا او در نظر خداوند بزرگ خواهد بود و هرگز به شراب و باده لب نخواهد زد. از همان ابتدای تولّد از روح‌القدس پُر خواهد بود

¹⁶And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

¹⁶ و بسیاری از بنی‌اسرائیل را به سوی خداوند، خدای آنان باز خواهد گردانید.

¹⁷And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

¹⁷ با روح و قدرت الیاس مانند پیشاهنگی در حضور خداوند قدم خواهد زد تا پدران و فرزندان را آشتی دهد و سركشان را به راه نیكان آورد و مردمانی مستعد برای خداوند آماده سازد.»

¹⁸And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

¹⁸ زكریا به فرشته گفت: «چطور می‌توانم این را باور كنم؟ من پیر هستم و زنم نیز سالخورده است.»

¹⁹And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

¹⁹ فرشته به او پاسخ داد: «من جبرائیل هستم كه در حضور خدا می‌ایستم و فرستاده شده‌ام تا با تو صحبت كنم و این مژده را به تو برسانم.

²⁰And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

²⁰ پس توجّه كن: تو تا هنگام وقوع این امور لال خواهی شد و نیروی تكلّم را از دست خواهی داد زیرا سخنان مرا كه در وقت مقرّر به حقیقت خواهد پیوست باور نكردی.»

²¹And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

²¹ جماعتی كه منتظر زكریا بودند از اینكه او آن‌همه در داخل جایگاه مقدّس در معبد بزرگ ماند، متعجّب گشتند.

²²And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.

²² وقتی بیرون آمد و یارای سخن گفتن نداشت، آنان فهمیدند كه در داخل جایگاه مقدّس در معبد بزرگ رؤیایی دیده است و چون نمی‌توانست حرف بزند ایما و اشاره می‌کرد.

²³And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.

²³ زكریا وقتی‌که دورهٔ خدمت كهانت خود را در معبد بزرگ به انجام رسانید به خانه بازگشت.

²⁴And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

²⁴ بعد از آن همسرش الیزابت حامله شد و مدّت پنج ماه در خلوت به سر برد و با خود می‌گفت:

²⁵Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

²⁵ «این كار را خداوند برای من كرده است و با این لطف خود، رسوایی مرا پیش مردم از میان برداشته است.»

²⁶And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

²⁶ در ماه ششم، جبرائیل فرشته از جانب خدا به شهری به نام ناصره، كه در استان جلیل واقع است

²⁷To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

²⁷ به نزد دختر باکره‌ای كه در عقد مردی به نام یوسف -‌از خاندان داوود- بود، فرستاده شد. نام این دختر مریم بود.

²⁸And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

²⁸ فرشته وارد شد و به او گفت: «سلام، ای کسی‌که مورد لطف هستی، خداوند با توست.»

²⁹And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

²⁹ امّا مریم از آنچه فرشته گفت بسیار مضطرب شد و ندانست كه معنی این سلام چیست.

³⁰And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

³⁰ فرشته به او گفت: «ای مریم، نترس زیرا خداوند به تو لطف فرموده است.

³¹And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

³¹ تو آبستن خواهی شد و پسری خواهی زایید و نام او را عیسی خواهی گذارد.

³²He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

³² او بزرگ خواهد بود و به پسر خدای متعال ملقّب خواهد شد. خداوند، خدا تخت پادشاهی جدّش داوود را به او عطا خواهد فرمود.

³³And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

³³ او تا به ابد برخاندان یعقوب فرمانروایی خواهد كرد و پادشاهی او هرگز پایانی نخواهد داشت.»

³⁴Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

³⁴ مریم به فرشته گفت: «این چگونه ممكن است؟ من باکره هستم.»

³⁵And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

³⁵ فرشته به او پاسخ داد: «روح‌القدس بر تو خواهد آمد و قدرت خدای متعال بر تو سایه خواهد افكند و به این سبب آن نوزاد مقدّس، پسر خدا نامیده خواهد شد.

³⁶And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

³⁶ بدان كه خویشاوند تو الیزابت در سن پیری پسری در رحم دارد و آن کسی‌که نازا به حساب می‌آمد اكنون شش ماه از حاملگی او می‌گذرد.

³⁷For with God nothing shall be impossible.

³⁷ زیرا برای خدا هیچ چیز محال نیست.»

³⁸And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

³⁸ مریم گفت: «باشد، من كنیز خداوند هستم، همان‌طور كه تو گفتی بشود.» و فرشته از پیش او رفت.

³⁹And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

³⁹ در آن روزها مریم عازم سفر شد و باشتاب به شهری واقع در كوهستان یهودیه رفت.

⁴⁰And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

⁴⁰ او به خانهٔ زكریا وارد شد و به الیزابت سلام كرد.

⁴¹And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

⁴¹ وقتی الیزابت سلام مریم را شنید، بچّه در رَحمش تكان خورد. الیزابت از روح‌القدس پُر شد

⁴²And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

⁴² و با صدای بلند گفت: «تو در بین زنها متبارک هستی و مبارک است ثمرهٔ رحم تو.

⁴³And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

⁴³ من كیستم كه مادر خداوندم به دیدنم بیاید؟

⁴⁴For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

⁴⁴ همین‌که سلام تو به گوش من رسید، بچّه از شادی در رحم من تكان خورد.

⁴⁵And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.

⁴⁵ خوشا به حال آن زنی كه باور می‌کند که وعدهٔ خداوند برای او به انجام خواهد رسید.»

⁴⁶And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,

⁴⁶ مریم گفت: «جان من خداوند را می‌‌ستاید

⁴⁷And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

⁴⁷ و روح من در نجات‌دهندهٔ من، خدا، شادی می‌کند،

⁴⁸For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

⁴⁸ چون او به كنیز ناچیز خود نظر لطف داشته است. از این پس همهٔ نسلها مرا خوشبخت خواهند خواند،

⁴⁹For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.

⁴⁹ زیرا آن قادر مطلق كارهای بزرگی برای من كرده است. نام او مقدّس است.

⁵⁰And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.

⁵⁰ رحمت او پشت در پشت برای كسانی است كه از او می‌ترسند.

⁵¹He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

⁵¹ دست خداوند با قدرت كار كرده است، متكبّران را با خیالات دلشان تارومار كرده

⁵²He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.

⁵² و زورمندان را از تختهایشان به زیر افكنده و فروتنان را سربلند كرده است.

⁵³He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.

⁵³ گرسنگان را با چیزهای نیكو سیر نموده و ثروتمندان را تهی‌دست روانه كرده است.

⁵⁴He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;

⁵⁴ به‌خاطر محبّت پایدار خود، از بندهٔ خود اسرائیل حمایت كرده است،

⁵⁵As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

⁵⁵ همان‌طور كه به اجداد ما یعنی به ابراهیم و به فرزندان او تا به ابد وعده داد.»

⁵⁶And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.

⁵⁶ مریم در حدود سه ماه پیش الیزابت ماند و بعد به منزل خود بازگشت.

⁵⁷Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

⁵⁷ وقت زایمان الیزابت فرا رسید و پسری به دنیا آورد.

⁵⁸And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.

⁵⁸ وقتی همسایگان و خویشاوندان او باخبر شدند كه خداوند چه لطف بزرگی در حق او كرده است مانند او شاد و خوشحال گشتند.

⁵⁹And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.

⁵⁹ پس از یک هفته آمدند تا نوزاد را ختنه نمایند و در نظر داشتند نام پدرش زكریا را بر او بگذارند.

⁶⁰And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.

⁶⁰ امّا مادرش گفت: «خیر، نام او باید یحیی باشد.»

⁶¹And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.

⁶¹ آنها گفتند: «امّا در خاندان تو هیچ‌کس چنین نامی ندارد.»

⁶²And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.

⁶² و با اشاره از پدرش پرسیدند كه تصمیم او دربارهٔ نام طفل چیست.

⁶³And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.

⁶³ او تخته‌ای خواست و در برابر تعجّب همگی نوشت: «نام او یحیی است.»

⁶⁴And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.

⁶⁴ ناگهان زبانش باز شد و به ستایش خدا پرداخت.

⁶⁵And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.

⁶⁵ تمام همسایگان ترسیدند و كلّیهٔ این اخبار در سرتاسر كوهستان یهودیه انتشار یافت.

⁶⁶And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.

⁶⁶ همهٔ کسانی‌که این موضوع را می‌شنیدند دربارهٔ آن فكر می‌کردند و می‌گفتند: «این كودک چه خواهد شد؟ در واقع دست خداوند با اوست.»

⁶⁷And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

⁶⁷ پدر او زكریا، از روح‌القدس پُر شد و چنین نبوّت كرد:

⁶⁸Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,

⁶⁸ «خداوند، خدای اسرائیل را سپاس باد. زیرا به یاری قوم خود آمده و آنان را رهایی داده است.

⁶⁹And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;

⁶⁹ از خاندان بندهٔ خود داوود، رهانندهٔ نیرومندی بر افراشته است.

⁷⁰As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:

⁷⁰ او از قدیم از زبان انبیای مقدّس خود وعده داد

⁷¹That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

⁷¹ كه ما را از دست دشمنانمان رهایی بخشد و از دست همهٔ کسانی‌که از ما نفرت دارند، آزاد سازد

⁷²To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;

⁷² و با نیاکان ما به رحمت رفتار نماید و پیمان مقدّس خود را به‌خاطر آورد.

⁷³The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,

⁷³ برای پدر ما ابراهیم سوگند یاد كرد

⁷⁴That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,

⁷⁴ كه ما را از دست دشمنان نجات دهد و عنایت فرماید كه او را بدون ترس

⁷⁵In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

⁷⁵ با پاكی و نیكی تا زنده‌ایم، عبادت نماییم.

⁷⁶And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;

⁷⁶ و تو، ای فرزند، نبیِ خدای متعال نامیده خواهی شد، زیرا جلوی قدمهای خداوند خواهی رفت تا راه او را آماده سازی

⁷⁷To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,

⁷⁷ و به قوم او خبر دهی كه با آمرزش گناهانشان رستگار می‌شوند،

⁷⁸Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,

⁷⁸ زیرا از رحمت و دلسوزی خدای ماست كه خورشید صبحگاهی از آسمان بر ما طلوع خواهد كرد

⁷⁹To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

⁷⁹ تا بر کسانی‌که در تاریكی و در سایهٔ مرگ به سر می‌برند بتابد و قدمهای ما را به راه صلح و سلامتی هدایت فرماید.» و امّا طفل بزرگ می‌شد و در روح قوی می‌گشت و تا روزی كه علناً به قوم اسرائیل ظاهر شد در بیابان به سر می‌برد.

⁸⁰And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

⁸⁰ و امّا طفل بزرگ می‌شد و در روح قوی می‌گشت و تا روزی كه علناً به قوم اسرائیل ظاهر شد در بیابان به سر می‌برد.
