¹In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

¹ در آن زمان یحیای تعمید‌دهنده در بیابان یهودیه ظاهر شد و تعلیم داده می‌گفت:

²And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

² «توبه كنید زیرا پادشاهی آسمان نزدیک است.»

³For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

³ یحیی همان كسی است كه اشعیای نبی دربارهٔ او می‌گوید: «مردی در بیابان فریاد می‌زند: راه خداوند را آماده سازید و مسیر او را راست گردانید.»

⁴And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

⁴ لباس یحیی از پشم شتر بود و كمربندی چرمی به كمر می‌بست و خوراكش ملخ و عسل صحرایی بود.

⁵Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,

⁵ مردم از اورشلیم و تمام یهودیه و نواحی رود اردن پیش او می‌آمدند

⁶And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

⁶ و به گناهان خود اعتراف می‌کردند و در رود اردن از او تعمید می‌گرفتند.

⁷But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

⁷ وقتی یحیی دید بسیاری از فریسیان و صدوقیان برای تعمید آمده‌اند به آنان گفت: «ای مارها چه کسی شما را آگاه كرد تا از غضب آینده بگریزید؟

⁸Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

⁸ پس کارهایی را كه شایستهٔ توبه باشد، انجام دهید.

⁹And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

⁹ در این فكر نباشید كه پدری مانند ابراهیم دارید. بدانید كه خدا قادر است از این سنگها برای ابراهیم فرزندانی بیافریند.

¹⁰And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

¹⁰ اكنون تیشه بر ریشهٔ درختان گذاشته شده و هر درختی كه میوهٔ خوب به بار نیاورد بریده و در آتش افكنده خواهد شد.

¹¹I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

¹¹ من شما را با آب تعمید می‌دهم و این تعمید نشانهٔ توبه شماست ولی کسی‌که بعد از من می‌آید، از من تواناتر است و من لایق آن نیستم كه حتّی کفشهای او را بردارم. او شما را با روح‌القدس و آتش تعمید خواهد داد.

¹²Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

¹² او چنگال خود را در دست گرفته و خرمن خود را پاک خواهد كرد. گندم را در انبار جمع می‌کند، ولی كاه را در آتش خاموش نشدنی خواهد سوزانید.»

¹³Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

¹³ در آن وقت عیسی از جلیل به رود اردن پیش یحیی آمد تا از او تعمید بگیرد.

¹⁴But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

¹⁴ یحیی سعی کرد او را از این کار باز دارد و گفت: «آیا تو پیش من می‌آیی؟ من احتیاج دارم از تو تعمید بگیرم.»

¹⁵And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

¹⁵ عیسی در جواب گفت: «بگذار فعلاً این‌طور باشد، زیرا به این وسیله احكام شریعت را بجا خواهیم آورد.» پس یحیی قبول كرد.

¹⁶And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

¹⁶ عیسی پس از تعمید، فوراً از آب بیرون آمد. آنگاه آسمان گشوده شد و او روح خدا را دید كه مانند كبوتری نازل شده به سوی او می‌آید. و صدایی از آسمان شنیده شد كه می‌گفت: «این است پسر عزیز من كه از او خشنودم.»

¹⁷And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

¹⁷ و صدایی از آسمان شنیده شد كه می‌گفت: «این است پسر عزیز من كه از او خشنودم.»
