¹Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.

¹După aceea, Nahaş, împăratul fiilor lui Amon, a murit, şi în locul lui a domnit fiul său.

²And David said, I will show kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.

²David a zis: ,,Voi arăta bunăvoinţă lui Hanun, fiul lui Nahaş, căci tatăl lui a arătat bunăvoinţă faţă de mine.`` Şi David a trimes soli să -l mîngîie pentru moartea tatălui său. Cînd au ajuns slujitorii lui David în ţara fiilor lui Amon, la Hanun, ca să -l mîngîie,

³But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honor thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?

³căpeteniile fiilor lui Amon au zis lui Hanun: ,,Crezi că David îţi trimete oameni să te mîngîie, ca să cinstească pe tatăl tău? -Oare n'au venit slujitorii lui la tine ca să cunoască cetatea şi s'o nimicească, şi ca să iscodească ţara?``

⁴Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.

⁴Atunci Hanun a luat pe slujitorii lui David, a pus să -i radă, şi să le taie hainele pela mijloc pînă la brîu. Apoi le -a dat drumul.

⁵Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

⁵David, căruia au venit şi i-au dat de ştire despre cele întîmplate cu oamenii aceştia, a trimes nişte oameni înaintea lor, căci li se făcuse mare ruşine; şi împăratul a trimes să le spună: ,,Rămîneţi la Ierihon pînă vă va creşte barba, şi apoi să vă întoarceţi.``

⁶And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syriamaachah, and out of Zobah.

⁶Fiii lui Amon au văzut că se făcuseră urîţi lui David, şi Hanun şi fiii lui Amon au trimes o mie de talanţi de argint să tocmească în slujba lor cară şi călăreţi dela Sirienii din Mesopotamia şi dela Sirienii din Maaca şi din Ţoba.

⁷So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.

⁷Au tocmit treizeci şi două de mii de cară şi pe împăratul din Maaca împreună cu poporul lui, cari au venit şi au tăbărît înaintea Medebei. Fiii lui Amon s'au strîns din cetăţile lor, şi au mers la luptă.

⁸And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

⁸La auzul acestei veşti, David a trimes împotriva lor pe Ioab şi toată oştirea de oameni viteji.

⁹And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.

⁹Fiii lui Amon au ieşit, şi s'au înşirat în linie de bătaie la intrarea cetăţii; împăraţii cari veniseră au tăbărît deosebit pe cîmp.

¹⁰Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.

¹⁰Ioab a văzut că avea de luptat şi înainte şi înapoi. A ales atunci din toţi voinicii de frunte ai lui Israel o ceată, pe care a aşezat -o împotriva Sirienilor;

¹¹And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.

¹¹şi a pus supt porunca fratelui său Abişai cealaltă parte a poporului, ca să ţină piept fiilor lui Amon.

¹²And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.

¹²El a zis: ,,Dacă Sirienii vor fi mai tari decît mine, să-mi vii tu în ajutor; şi dacă fiii lui Amon vor fi mai tari decît tine, îţi voi veni eu în ajutor.

¹³Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.

¹³Fii tare, şi să ne îmbărbătăm pentru poporul nostru şi pentru cetăţile Dumnezeului nostru, şi Domnul să facă ce va crede!``

¹⁴So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.

¹⁴Ioab, cu poporul lui, a înaintat la luptă împotriva Sirienilor, şi ei au fugit dinaintea lui.

¹⁵And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.

¹⁵Şi cînd au văzut fiii lui Amon că Sirienii o luaseră la fugă, au fugit şi ei dinaintea lui Abişai, fratele lui Ioab, şi s'au întors în cetate. Şi Ioab s'a întors la Ierusalim.

¹⁶And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.

¹⁶Sirienii, văzînd că fuseseră bătuţi de Israel, au trimes şi au adus pe Sirienii cari erau de cealaltă parte a Rîului; şi Şofah, căpetenia oştirii lui Hadarezer, era în fruntea lor.

¹⁷And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.

¹⁷Au dat de ştire lui David, care a strîns pe tot Israelul, a trecut Iordanul, a mers împotriva lor, şi s'a pregătit de luptă împotriva lor. David s'a înşiruit în linie de bătaie împotriva Sirienilor. Dar Sirienii, după ce se bătuseră cu el,

¹⁸But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.

¹⁸au fugit dinaintea lui Israel. David le -a ucis oamenii dela şapte mii de cară şi patruzeci de mii de pedestraşi, şi a omorît pe Şofah, căpetenia oştirii.

¹⁹And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.

¹⁹Slujitorii lui Hadarezer, văzîndu-se bătuţi de Israel, au făcut pace cu David, şi i s'au supus. Şi Sirienii n'au vrut să mai ajute pe fiii lui Amon.
