¹Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you.

¹,,Fraţilor şi părinţilor, ascultaţi acum cuvîntul meu de apărare faţă de voi!``

²(And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)

²Cînd au auzit ei că le vorbeşte în limba evreiască, au ţinut şi mai multă linişte. Şi Pavel a zis:

³I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.

³,,Eu sînt Iudeu, născut în Tarsul Ciliciei; dar am fost crescut în cetatea aceasta, am învăţat la picioarele lui Gamaliel să cunosc cu deamăruntul Legea părinţilor noştri, şi am fost tot atît de plin de rîvnă pentru Dumnezeu, cum sînteţi şi voi toţi azi.

⁴And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

⁴Am prigonit pînă la moarte această Cale, am legat şi am pus în temniţă bărbaţi şi femei:

⁵As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.

⁵Marele preot şi tot soborul bătrînilor îmi sînt martori. Am luat chiar şi scrisori dela ei către fraţii din Damasc, unde m'am dus să aduc legaţi la Ierusalim pe ceice se aflau acolo, ca să fie pedepsiţi.

⁶And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.

⁶Cînd eram pe drum şi mă apropiam de Damasc, deodată, pela amiază, a strălucit împrejurul meu o mare lumină din cer.

⁷And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

⁷Am căzut la pămînt, şi am auzit un glas, care-mi zicea: ,Saule, Saule, pentru ce Mă prigoneşti?`

⁸And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.

⁸,Cine eşti, Doamne?` am răspuns eu. Şi El mi -a zis: ,Eu sînt Isus din Nazaret, pe care -L prigoneşti.``

⁹And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.

⁹Cei ce erau cu mine, au văzut bine lumina, şi s'au înfricoşat; dar n'au auzit glasul Celui ce vorbea.

¹⁰And I said, What shall I do, LORD? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.

¹⁰Atunci am zis: ,Ce să fac, Doamne?` ,Scoală-te`, mi -a răspuns Domnul, ,du-te în Damasc, şi acolo ţi se va spune ce trebuie să faci.``

¹¹And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.

¹¹,,Fiindcă nu puteam să văd nimic, din pricina strălucirii luminii aceleia, ceice erau cu mine, m'au luat de mînă, şi aşa am ajuns în Damasc.

¹²And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,

¹²Şi a venit la mine un om, numit Anania, bărbat temător de Dumnezeu, după Lege, şi pe care toţi Iudeii, cari locuiesc în Damasc, îl vorbeau de bine.

¹³Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.

¹³El mi -a zis: ,Frate Saule, capătă-ţi din nou vederea!` Chiar în clipa aceea, mi-am căpătat vederea, şi m'am uitat le el.

¹⁴And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.

¹⁴El mi -a zis: ,Dumnezeul părinţilor noştri te -a ales să cunoşti voia Lui, să vezi pe Cel Neprihănit, şi să auzi cuvinte din gura Lui;

¹⁵For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.

¹⁵căci Îi vei fi martur, faţă de toţi oamenii, pentru lucrurile, pe cari le-ai văzut şi auzit.

¹⁶And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

¹⁶Şi acum, ce zăboveşti? Scoală-te, primeşte botezul, şi fii spălat de păcatele tale, chemînd Numele Domnului.``

¹⁷And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance;

¹⁷Şi mi s'a întîmplat că, după ce m'am întors la Ierusalim, pe cînd mă rugam în templu, am căzut într'o răpire sufletească;

¹⁸And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.

¹⁸şi am văzut pe Domnul care-mi zicea: ,Grăbeşte-te, ieşi iute din Ierusalim, căci nu vor primi mărturisirea ta despre Mine.``

¹⁹And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:

¹⁹Şi am zis: ,Doamne, ei ştiu că eu băgam în temniţă şi băteam prin sinagogi pe ceice cred în Tine:

²⁰And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.

²⁰şi că, atunci cînd se vărsa sîngele lui Ştefan, marturul Tău, eram şi eu de faţă, îmi uneam încuviinţarea mea cu a celorlaţi, şi păzeam hainele celor ce -l omorau.``

²¹And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.

²¹Atunci El mi -a zis: ,Du-te, căci te voi trimite departe la Neamuri..``

²²And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.

²²Ei l-au ascultat pînă la cuvîntul acesta. Dar atunci şi-au ridicat glasul, şi au zis: ,,Ia de pe pămînt pe un astfel de om! Nu este vrednic să trăiască!``

²³And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air,

²³Şi scoteau strigăte, îşi aruncau hainele, şi asvîrleau cu ţărînă în văduh.

²⁴The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him.

²⁴Căpitanul a poruncit să ducă pe Pavel în cetăţuie şi să -l cerceteze, bătîndu -l cu biciul, ca să afle din ce pricină strigau aşa împotriva lui.

²⁵And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?

²⁵Pe cînd îl legau cu curele, Pavel a zis sutaşului, care era de faţă: ,,Vă este îngăduit să bateţi pe un Roman, care nu este osîndit?``

²⁶When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.

²⁶La auzul acestor cuvinte, sutaşul s'a dus să dea de ştire căpitanului, şi a zis: ,,Ce ai de gînd să faci? Omul acesta este cetăţean roman.``

²⁷Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.

²⁷Şi cînd a venit căpitanul, a zis lui Pavel: ,,Spune-mi, eşti roman?`` ,,Da``, i -a răspuns el.

²⁸And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.

²⁸Căpitanul a zis: ,,Eu cu o mare sumă de bani am dobîndit cetăţenia aceasta.`` ,,Şi eu``, a zis Pavel, ,,sînt chiar născut Roman.``

²⁹Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.

²⁹Numaidecît, cei ce aveau să -l cerceteze prin bătaie, au încetat să -l mai necăjească: ba căpitanul, cînd a aflat că Pavel este roman, s'a temut, pentrucă -l legase.

³⁰On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.

³⁰A doua zi, fiindcă voia să ştie bine pentruce este pîrît de Iudei, l -a deslegat, şi a poruncit să se adune laolaltă preoţii cei mai de seamă şi tot Soborul; apoi, a adus pe Pavel jos, şi l -a pus înaintea lor.
