¹And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.

²These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.

²Iată istoria lui Iacov. Iosif, la vîrsta de şaptesprezece ani, păştea oile cu fraţii lui; băiatul acesta era cu fiii Bilhei şi cu fiii Zilpei, nevestele tatălui său. Şi Iosif spunea tatălui lor vorbele lor cele rele.

³Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colors.

³Israel iubea pe Iosif mai mult decît pe toţi ceilalţi fii ai săi, pentrucă îl născuse la bătrîneţă; şi i -a făcut o haină pestriţă.

⁴And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.

⁴Fraţii lui au văzut că tatăl lor îl iubea mai mult decît pe ei toţi, şi au început să -l urască. Nu puteau să -i spună nicio vorbă prietenească.

⁵And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.

⁵Iosif a visat un vis, şi l -a istorisit fraţilor săi, cari l-au urît şi mai mult.

⁶And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:

⁶El le -a zis: ,,Ia ascultaţi ce vis am visat!

⁷For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.

⁷Noi eram la legatul snopilor în mijlocul cîmpului; şi iată că snopul meu s'a ridicat şi a stătut în picioare; iar snopii voştri l-au înconjurat, şi s'au aruncat cu faţa la pămînt înaintea lui.``

⁸And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.

⁸Fraţii lui i-au zis: ,,Doar n'ai să împărăţeşti tu peste noi? Doar n'ai să ne cîrmuieşti tu pe noi?`` Şi l-au urît şi mai mult, din pricina visurilor lui şi din pricina cuvintelor lui.

⁹And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.

⁹Iosif a mai visat un alt vis, şi l -a istorisit fraţilor săi. El a zis: ,,Am mai visat un vis! Soarele, luna, şi unsprezece stele se aruncau cu faţa la pămînt înaintea mea.``

¹⁰And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?

¹⁰L -a istorisit tatălui său şi fraţilor săi. Tatăl său l -a mustrat, şi i -a zis: ,,Ce înseamnă visul acesta, pe care l-ai visat? Nu cumva vom veni, eu, mama ta şi fraţii tăi, să ne aruncăm cu faţa la pămînt înaintea ta?``

¹¹And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.

¹¹Fraţii săi au început să -l pismuiască; dar tatăl său a ţinut minte lucrurile acestea.

¹²And his brethren went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.

¹²Fraţii lui Iosif se duseseră la Sihem, ca să pască oile tatălui lor.

¹³And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I.

¹³Israel a zis lui Iosif: ,,Fraţii tăi pasc oile la Sihem! Vino, căci vreau să te trimet la ei.`` ,,Iată-mă, sînt gata,`` a răspuns el.

¹⁴And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.

¹⁴Israel i -a zis: ,,Du-te, rogu-te, şi vezi dacă fraţii tăi sînt sănătoşi, şi dacă oile sînt bine; şi adu-mi veşti.`` L -a trimes astfel din valea Hebronului şi Iosif a ajuns la Sihem.

¹⁵And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?

¹⁵Pe cînd rătăcea pe cîmp, l -a întîlnit un om. Omul acela l -a întrebat: ,,Ce cauţi?``

¹⁶And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks.

¹⁶,,Caut pe fraţii mei,`` a răspuns Iosif; ,,spune-mi, te rog, unde pasc ei oile?``

¹⁷And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.

¹⁷Şi omul acela a zis: ,,Au plecat de aici; căci i-am auzit spunînd: ,,Haidem la Dotan.`` Iosif s'a dus după fraţii săi, şi i -a găsit la Dotan.

¹⁸And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.

¹⁸Ei l-au zărit de departe, şi pînă să se apropie de ei, s'au sfătuit să -l omoare.``

¹⁹And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.

¹⁹Ei au zis unul către altul: ,,Iată că vine făuritorul de visuri!

²⁰Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.

²⁰Veniţi acum, să -l omorîm şi să -l aruncăm într'una din aceste gropi; vom spune că l -a mîncat o fiară sălbatică, şi vom vedea ce se va alege de visurile lui.``

²¹And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.

²¹Ruben a auzit lucrul acesta, şi l -a scos din mînile lor. El a zis: ,,Să nu -i luăm viaţa!``

²²And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.

²²Ruben le -a zis: ,,Să nu vărsaţi sînge; ci mai bine aruncaţi -l în groapa aceasta care este în pustie, şi nu puneţi mîna pe el.`` Căci avea de gînd să -l scape din mînile lor, şi să -l aducă înapoi la tatăl său.

²³And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stripped Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colors that was on him;

²³Cînd a ajuns Iosif la fraţii săi, aceştia l-au desbrăcat de haina lui, de haina cea pestriţă, pe care o avea pe el.

²⁴And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.

²⁴L-au luat şi l-au aruncat în groapă. Groapa aceasta era goală: nu era apă în ea.

²⁵And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmaelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.

²⁵,,Apoi au şezut să mănînce. Ridicîndu-şi ochii, au văzut o ceată de Ismaeliţi venind din Galaad; cămilele lor erau încărcate cu tămîie, cu leac alinător şi smirnă, pe cari le duceau în Egipt.

²⁶And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?

²⁶Atunci Iuda a zis fraţilor săi: ,,Ce vom cîştiga să ucidem pe fratele nostru şi să -i ascundem sîngele?

²⁷Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.

²⁷Veniţi mai bine să -l vindem Ismaeliţilor, şi să nu punem mîna pe el, căci este fratele nostru, carne din carnea noastră.`` Şi fraţii lui l-au ascultat.

²⁸Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.

²⁸La trecerea negustorilor madianiţi, au tras şi au scos pe Iosif afară din groapă, şi l-au vîndut cu douăzeci de sicli de argint Ismaeliţilor, cari l-au dus în Egipt.

²⁹And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.

²⁹Ruben s'a întors la groapă; şi iată că Iosif nu mai era în groapă. El şi -a rupt hainele,

³⁰And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go?

³⁰s'a întors la fraţii săi, şi a zis: ,,Băiatul nu mai este! Ce mă voi face eu?``

³¹And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood;

³¹Ei au luat atunci haina lui Iosif; şi junghiind un ţap, i-au muiat haina în sînge.

³²And they sent the coat of many colors, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son's coat or no.

³²Au trimes tatălui lor haina cea pestriţă, punînd să -i spună: ,,Iată ce am găsit! Vezi dacă este haina fiului tău sau nu.``

³³And he knew it, and said, It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.

³³Iacov a cunoscut -o, şi a zis: ,,Este haina fiului meu! O fiară sălbatică l -a mîncat! Da, Iosif a fost făcut bucăţi!``

³⁴And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.

³⁴Şi şi -a rupt hainele, şi -a pus un sac pe coapse, şi a jălit multă vreme pe fiul său.

³⁵And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.

³⁵Toţi fiii şi toate fiicele lui au venit ca să -l mîngîie; dar el nu voia să primească nici o mîngîiere, ci zicea: ,,Plîngînd mă voi pogorî la fiul meu în locuinţa morţilor.`` Şi plîngea astfel pe fiul său.

³⁶And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, and captain of the guard.

³⁶Madianiţii l-au vîndut în Egipt lui Potifar, un dregător al lui Faraon, şi anume căpetenia străjerilor.
