¹And the famine was sore in the land.

¹Foametea bîntuia greu în ţară.

²And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said unto them, Go again, buy us a little food.

²Cînd au isprăvit de mîncat grîul, pe care -l aduseseră din Egipt, Iacov a zis fiilor săi: ,,Duceţi-vă iarăş, şi cumpăraţi-ne ceva merinde.``

³And Judah spake unto him, saying, The man did solemnly protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.

³Iuda i -a răspuns: ,,Omul acela ne -a spus curat: ,Să nu-mi mai vedeţi faţa, dacă fratele vostru nu va fi cu voi.`

⁴If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food:

⁴Dacă vrei deci să trimeţi pe fratele nostru cu noi, ne vom pogorî, şi-ţi vom cumpăra merinde.

⁵But if thou wilt not send him, we will not go down: for the man said unto us, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.

⁵Dar dacă nu vrei să -l trimeţi, nu ne vom pogorî, căci omul acela ne -a spus: ,,Să nu-mi mai vedeţi faţa, dacă fratele vostru nu va fi cu voi!``

⁶And Israel said, Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother?

⁶Israel a zis atunci: ,,Pentruce mi-aţi făcut un astfel de rău, şi aţi spus omului aceluia că mai aveţi un frate?``

⁷And they said, The man asked us straitly of our state, and of our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words: could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother down?

⁷Ei au răspuns: ,,Omul acela ne -a întrebat despre noi şi familia noastră, şi a zis: ,Mai trăieşte tatăl vostru? Mai aveţi vreun frate?` Şi noi am răspuns la întrebările acestea. Puteam noi să ştim că are să zică: ,Aduceţi pe fratele vostru?``

⁸And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones.

⁸Iuda a zis tatălui său Israel: ,Trimete copilul cu mine, ca să ne sculăm şi să plecăm, şi vom trăi şi nu vom muri, noi, tu şi copiii noştri.

⁹I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever:

⁹Răspund eu pentru el; ai să -l ceri înapoi din mîna mea. Dacă nu -l voi aduce înapoi la tine, şi dacă nu -l voi pune înaintea ta, vinovat să fiu faţă de tine pentru totdeauna.

¹⁰For except we had lingered, surely now we had returned this second time.

¹⁰Căci dacă n'am mai fi zăbovit, de două ori ne-am fi întors pînă acum.``

¹¹And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds:

¹¹Israel, tatăl lor, le -a zis: ,,Fiindcă trebuie, faceţi aşa. Luaţi-vă în saci ceva din cele mai bune roade ale ţării, ca să duceţi un dar omului aceluia, şi anume: puţin leac alinător, şi puţină miere, mirodenii, smirnă, fisticuri şi migdale.

¹²And take double money in your hand; and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your sacks, carry it again in your hand; peradventure it was an oversight:

¹²Luaţi cu voi argint îndoit, şi duceţi înapoi argintul, pe care vi -l puseseră la gura sacilor: poate că a fost o greşeală.

¹³Take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man:

¹³Luaţi şi pe fratele vostru, sculaţi-vă şi întoarceţi-vă la omul acela.

¹⁴And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin. If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.

¹⁴Dumnezeul Cel Atotputernic să vă facă să căpătaţi trecere înaintea omului aceluia, şi să lase să se întoarcă împreună cu voi pe celalt frate al vostru şi pe Beniamin! Iar eu, dacă trebuie să fiu lipsit de copiii mei, lipsit să fiu!``

¹⁵And the men took that present, and they took double money in their hand and Benjamin; and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.

¹⁵Au luat darul; au luat cu ei argint îndoit, precum şi pe Beniamin; s'au sculat, s'au pogorît în Egipt, şi s'au înfăţişat înaintea lui Iosif.

¹⁶And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the ruler of his house, Bring these men home, and slay, and make ready; for these men shall dine with me at noon.

¹⁶Cum a văzut Iosif pe Beniamin cu ei, a zis economului său: ,,Bagă pe oamenii aceştia în casă, taie vite şi găteşte; căci oamenii aceştia au să mănînce cu mine la amează.``

¹⁷And the man did as Joseph bade; and the man brought the men into Joseph's house.

¹⁷Omul acela a făcut ce -i poruncise Iosif, şi a dus pe oamenii aceia în casa lui Iosif.

¹⁸And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph's house; and they said, Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bondmen, and our asses.

¹⁸Ei s'au temut cînd au văzut că -i bagă în casa lui Iosif, şi au zis: ,,Ne bagă înlăuntru din pricina argintului pus în sacii noştri data trecută; vor să se năpustească peste noi, ca să ne ia robi, şi să pună mîna pe măgarii noştri.``

¹⁹And they came near to the steward of Joseph's house, and they communed with him at the door of the house,

¹⁹S'au apropiat de economul casei lui Iosif, şi au intrat în vorbă cu el la uşa casei;

²⁰And said, O sir, we came indeed down at the first time to buy food:

²⁰şi au zis: ,,Domnule, noi ne-am mai pogorît odată aici, ca să cumpărăm merinde.

²¹And it came to pass, when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight: and we have brought it again in our hand.

²¹Apoi, cînd am ajuns la locul unde trebuia să rămînem peste noapte, ne-am deschis sacii; şi iatăcă argintul fiecăruia era la gura sacului său, argintul nostru, după greutatea lui: şi l-am adus înapoi cu noi.

²²And other money have we brought down in our hands to buy food: we cannot tell who put our money in our sacks.

²²Am adus şi alt argint, ca să cumpărăm merinde. Nu ştim cine a pus argintul în sacii noştri.``

²³And he said, Peace be to you, fear not: your God, and the God of your father, hath given you treasure in your sacks: I had your money. And he brought Simeon out unto them.

²³Economul a răspuns: ,,Fiţi pe pace! Nu vă temeţi de nimic. Dumnezeul vostru, Dumnezeul tatălui vostru, v'a pus pe ascuns o comoară în saci. Argintul vostru a trecut prin mînile mele.`` Şi le -a adus şi pe Simeon.

²⁴And the man brought the men into Joseph's house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their asses provender.

²⁴Omul acesta i -a băgat în casa lui Iosif; le -a dat apă de şi-au spălat picioarele; a dat şi nutreţ măgarilor lor.

²⁵And they made ready the present against Joseph came at noon: for they heard that they should eat bread there.

²⁵Ei şi-au pregătit darul pînă la venirea lui Iosif, la amează; căci aflaseră că au să mănînce la el.

²⁶And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth.

²⁶Cînd a ajuns Iosif acasă, i-au dat darul, pe care i -l aduseseră, şi s'au aruncat cu faţa la pămînt înaintea lui.

²⁷And he asked them of their welfare, and said, Is your father well, the old man of whom ye spake? Is he yet alive?

²⁷El i -a întrebat de sănătate; şi a zis: ,,Bătrînul vostru tată, de care aţi vorbit, este sănătos? Mai trăieşte?``

²⁸And they answered, Thy servant our father is in good health, he is yet alive. And they bowed down their heads, and made obeisance.

²⁸Ei au răspuns: ,,Robul tău, tatăl nostru, este sănătos; trăieşte încă``. Şi s'au plecat şi s'au aruncat cu faţa la pămînt.

²⁹And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son.

²⁹Iosif a ridicat ochii; şi, aruncînd o privire spre frate-său Beniamin, fiul mamei sale, a zis: ,,Acesta este fratele vostru cel tînăr, despre care mi-aţi vorbit?`` Şi a adăugat: ,,Dumnezeu să aibă milă de tine, fiule!``

³⁰And Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother: and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there.

³⁰Iosif a isprăvit repede, căci i se rupea inima pentru fratele său, şi simţea nevoie să plîngă; a intrat de grab într'o odaie, şi a plîns acolo.

³¹And he washed his face, and went out, and refrained himself, and said, Set on bread.

³¹Dupăce s'a spălat pe faţă, a ieşit din odaie; şi, silindu-se să se stăpînească, a zis: ,,Aduceţi de mîncare!``

³²And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, which did eat with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians.

³²Au adus de mîncare lui Iosif deoparte, şi fraţilor lui de o parte; Egiptenilor, cari mîncau cu el, le-au adus deasemenea mîncare de o parte; căci Egiptenii nu puteau să mănînce cu Evreii, fiindcă lucrul acesta pentru ei este o urîciune.

³³And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth: and the men marveled one at another.

³³Fraţii lui Iosif s'au aşezat la masă în faţa lui: dela întîiul născut, după dreptul lui de întîi născut, şi pînă la cel mai tînăr, aşezaţi după vîrstă; şi se uitau unii la alţii cu mirare.

³⁴And he took and sent messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin's mess was five times so much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him.

³⁴Iosif a pus să le dea din bucatele cari erau înaintea lui; iar Beniamin a căpătat de cinci ori mai mult decît ceilalţi. Şi au băut, şi s'au veselit împreună cu el.
