¹Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

¹,,Cuvîntul Domnului mi -a vorbit astfel:

²Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.

²,Du-te, şi strigă la urechile cetăţii Ierusalimului: ,Aşa vorbeşte Domnul: ,Mi-aduc aminte încă de dragostea pe care o aveai cînd erai tînără, de iubirea ta, cînd erai logodită, cînd Mă urmai în pustie, într'un pămînt nesămănat.

³Israel was holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD.

³Atunci Israel era închinat Domnului, era cele dintîi roade ale lui; toţi cei ce mîncau din ele se făceau vinovaţi şi venea nenorocirea peste ei, zice Domnul.``

⁴Hear ye the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel:

⁴,,Ascultaţi Cuvîntul Domnului, casa lui Iacov, şi voi, toate familiile casei lui Israel!

⁵Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?

⁵Aşa vorbeşte Domnul: ,Ce nelegiuire au găsit părinţii voştri în Mine, de s'au depărtat de Mine, şi au mers după nimicuri şi au ajuns ei înşişi de nimic?

⁶Neither said they, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt?

⁶Ei n'au întrebat: ,Unde este Domnul, care ne -a scos din ţara Egiptului, care ne -a povăţuit prin pustie, printr'un pămînt uscat şi plin de gropi, printr'un pămînt unde domneşte seceta şi umbra morţii, printr'un pămînt pe unde nimeni nu trece şi unde nu locuieşte nici un om?`

⁷And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination.

⁷,V'am adus într'o ţară ca o livadă de pomi, ca să -i mîncaţi roadele şi bunătăţile; dar voi aţi venit, Mi-aţi spurcat ţara şi Mi-aţi prefăcut moştenirea într'o urîciune.

⁸The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.

⁸Preoţii n'au întrebat: ,Unde este Domnul?` Păzitorii Legii nu M'au cunoscut, păstorii sufleteşti Mi-au fost necredincioşi, proorocii au proorocit prin Baal, şi au alergat după cei ce nu sînt de niciun ajutor.`

⁹Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the LORD, and with your children's children will I plead.

⁹De aceea, Mă voi mai certa cu voi, zice Domnul, şi Mă voi certa cu copiii copiilor voştri.

¹⁰For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing.

¹⁰Treceţi în ostroavele Chitim, şi priviţi! Trimeteţi la Chedar, uitaţi-vă bine, şi vedeţi dacă s'a întîmplat acolo aşa ceva:

¹¹Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.

¹¹şi -a schimbat vreodată un popor dumnezeii, măcarcă ei nu sînt dumnezei? Dar poporul Meu şi -a schimbat Slava, cu ceva care nu este de niciun ajutor!

¹²Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the LORD.

¹²Miraţi-vă de aşa ceva, ceruri, înfioraţi-vă de spaimă şi groază, zice Domnul.`

¹³For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

¹³,Căci poporul Meu a săvîrşit un îndoit păcat: M'au părăsit pe Mine, Izvorul apelor vii, şi şi-au săpat puţuri, puţuri crăpate, cari nu ţin apă.`

¹⁴Is Israel a servant? is he a homeborn slave? why is he spoiled?

¹⁴,Este Israel un rob cumpărat, sau fiu de rob născut în casă?` ,Atunci pentru ce a ajuns de pradă?`

¹⁵The young lions roared upon him, and yelled, and they made his land waste: his cities are burned without inhabitant.

¹⁵,Nişte pui de lei mugesc şi strigă împotriva lui, şi -i pustiesc ţara; cetăţile îi sînt arse şi fără locuitori.

¹⁶Also the children of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown of thy head.

¹⁶Chiar şi cei din Nof şi Tahpanes îţi vor zdrobi creştetul capului.

¹⁷Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way?

¹⁷Nu ţi-ai făcut tu singur lucrul acesta pentru că ai părăsit pe Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, cînd te îndrepta pe calea cea bună?

¹⁸And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river?

¹⁸Şi acum, ce cauţi să te duci în Egipt, să bei apa Nilului? Ce cauţi să te duci în Asiria, să bei apa rîului?

¹⁹Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.

¹⁹Tu singur te pedepseşti cu răutatea ta şi tu singur te loveşti cu necredincioşia ta, şi vei şti şi vei vedea ce rău şi amar este să părăseşti pe Domnul, Dumnezeu tău, şi să n'ai nici o frică de Mine, zice Domnul, Dumnezeul oştirilor.`

²⁰For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the harlot.

²⁰,De mult ţi-ai sfărîmat jugul, ţi-ai rupt legăturile, şi ai zis: ,Nu mai vreau să slujesc ca un rob!` Căci pe orice deal înalt şi supt orice copac verde, te-ai întins ca o curvă.

²¹Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me?

²¹Te sădisem ca o vie minunată şi de cel mai bun soi: cum te-ai schimbat şi te-ai prefăcut într'o coardă de viţă sălbatică?

²²For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD.

²²Chiar dacă te-ai spăla cu silitră, chiar dacă ai da cu multă sodă, nelegiuirea ta tot ar rămînea scrisă înaintea Mea, zice Domnul, Dumnezeu.`

²³How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift dromedary traversing her ways;

²³,Cum poţi să zici: ,Nu m'am spurcat, şi nu m'am dus după Baali?` Priveşte-ţi urma paşilor în vale, şi vezi ce ai făcut, dromaderă iute la mers şi care baţi drumurile şi le încrucişezi!

²⁴A wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.

²⁴Măgăriţă sălbatică, deprinsă cu pustia, care gîfăie în aprinderea patimei ei, cine o va împiedeca să-şi facă pofta? Toţi cei ce o caută n'au nevoie să se ostenească: o găsesc în luna ei.

²⁵Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst: but thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.

²⁵Nu te lăsa cu picioarele goale, nu-ţi usca gîtlejul de sete! Dar tu zici: ,Degeaba, nu! Căci iubesc dumnezeii străini, şi vreau să merg după ei.`

²⁶As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets.

²⁶Cum rămîne uluit un hoţ cînd este prins, aşa de uluiţi vor rămînea cei din casa lui Israel, ei, împăraţii lor, căpeteniile lor, preoţii lor şi proorocii lor.

²⁷Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.

²⁷Ei zic lemnului: ,Tu eşti tatăl meu!` Şi pietrei: ,Tu mi-ai dat viaţa!` Căci ei Îmi întorc spatele şi nu se uită la Mine. Dar cînd sînt în nenorocire, zic: ,Scoală-Te şi scapă-ne!`

²⁸But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.

²⁸Unde sînt dumnezeii tăi, pe cari ţi i-ai făcut? Să se scoale ei, dacă pot să te scape în vremea nenorocirii! Căci cîte cetăţi ai, atîţia dumnezei ai, Iuda!`

²⁹Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the LORD.

²⁹,Pentruce vă certaţi cu Mine? Toţi Mi-aţi fost necredincioşi, zice Domnul.` -

³⁰In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

³⁰,Degeaba v'am lovit copiii; n'au luat seama la certare; sabia voastră a mîncat pe proorocii voştri, ca un leu nimicitor.

³¹O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?

³¹O, neam rău de oameni, uitaţi-vă bine la Cuvîntul Domnului, care zice: ,Am fost Eu o pustie pentru Israel, sau o ţară plină de întunerec besnă? Pentruce zice atunci poporul Meu: ,Sîntem slobozi, nu voim să ne întoarcem la Tine?`

³²Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

³²Îşi uită fata podoabele, sau mireasa brîul? Dar poporul Meu M'a uitat de zile fără număr.

³³Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also taught the wicked ones thy ways.

³³Ce bine ştii să-ţi întocmeşti căile cînd este vorba să cauţi ce iubeşti! Chiar şi la nelegiuire te deprinzi.

³⁴Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.

³⁴Pînă şi pe poalele hainei tale se află sîngele sărmanilor nevinovaţi, pe cari nu i-ai prins făcînd nicio spargere.

³⁵Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.

³⁵Şi cu toate acestea, tu zici: ,Da, sînt nevinovat! Să se întoarcă acum mînia Lui dela mine!` Iată, Mă voi certa cu tine, pentrucă zici: ,N'am păcătuit!`

³⁶Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria.

³⁶Pentruce atîta grabă ca să-ţi schimbi drumul? Din Egipt îţi va veni ruşinea, cum ţi -a venit şi din Asiria!

³⁷Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the LORD hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.

³⁷Tot deacolo vei ieşi, cu mîinile pe cap; căci Domnul leapădă pe aceia în cari te încrezi, şi nu vei izbuti cu ei.``
