¹And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply.

¹Bărbaţii lui Efraim au zis lui Ghideon: ,,Ce înseamnă felul acesta de purtare faţă de noi? Pentruce nu ne-ai chemat, cînd ai plecat să te lupţi împotriva lui Madian?`` Şi au avut o mare ceartă cu el.

²And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

²Ghedeon le -a răspuns: ,,Ce-am făcut eu pe lîngă voi? Oare nu face mai mult culesul ciorchinelor rămase în via lui Efraim de cît culesul întregei vii a lui Abiezer?``

³God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

³În mînile voastre a dat Dumnezeu pe căpeteniile lui Madian: Oreb, şi Zeeb. Ce-am putut face eu deci pe lîngă voi?`` Dupăce le -a vorbit astfel, li s'a potolit mînia.

⁴And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.

⁴Ghedeon a ajuns la Iordan, şi l -a trecut, el şi cei trei sute de oameni cari erau cu el, obosiţi, dar urmărind mereu pe vrăjmaş.

⁵And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.

⁵El a zis celor din Sucot: ,,Daţi, vă rog, cîteva pîni poporului care mă însoţeşte, căci sînt obosiţi, şi sînt în urmărirea lui Zebah şi Ţalmuna, împăraţii Madianului.``

⁶And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?

⁶Căpeteniile din Sucot au răspuns: ,,Este oare mîna lui Zebah şi Ţalmuna în stăpînirea ta, ca să dăm pîne oştirii tale?``

⁷And Gideon said, Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.

⁷Şi Ghedeon a zis: ,,Ei bine! dupăce Domnul va da în mînile noastre pe Zebah şi pe Ţalmuna, vă voi scărpina carnea cu spini din pustie şi cu mărăcini.``

⁸And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him.

⁸De acolo s'a suit la Penuel, şi a făcut celor din Penuel aceeaş rugăminte. Ei i-au răspuns cum îi răspunseseră cei din Sucot.

⁹And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.

⁹Şi a zis şi celor din Penuel: ,,Cînd mă voi întoarce în pace, voi dărîma turnul acesta.``

¹⁰Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.

¹⁰Zebah şi Ţalmuna erau la Carcor împreună cu oştirea lor de aproape cincisprezece mii de oameni; toţi ceice mai rămăseseră din toată oştirea fiilor Răsăritului: o sută douăzeci de mii de oameni cari scoteau sabia, fuseseră ucişi.

¹¹And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host; for the host was secure.

¹¹Ghedeon s'a suit pe drumul celor ce locuiesc în corturi, la răsărit de Nobah şi de Iogbeha, şi a bătut oştirea care se credea la adăpost.

¹²And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.

¹²Zebah şi Ţalmuna au luat fuga; Ghedeon i -a urmărit, a prins pe cei doi împăraţi ai Madianului: Zebah şi Ţalmuna, şi a pus pe fugă toată oştirea.

¹³And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle before the sun was up,

¹³Ghedeon, fiul lui Ioas, s'a întors dela luptă prin suişul Heres.

¹⁴And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, even threescore and seventeen men.

¹⁴A prins dintre cei din Sucot un tînăr pe care l -a întrebat, şi care i -a dat în scris numele căpeteniilor şi bătrînilor din Sucot; erau şaptezeci şi şapte de bărbaţi.

¹⁵And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?

¹⁵Apoi a venit la cei din Sucot, şi a zis: ,,Iată pe Zebah şi Ţalmuna, pentru cari m'aţi batjocorit, zicînd: ,Oare mîna lui Zebah şi Ţalmuna este în stăpînirea ta, ca să dăm pîne oamenilor tăi obosiţi?``

¹⁶And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.

¹⁶Şi a luat pe bătrînii cetăţii, şi a pedepsit pe oamenii din Sucot cu spini din pustie şi cu mărăcini.

¹⁷And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.

¹⁷A dărîmat şi turnul din Penuel, şi a ucis pe oamenii cetăţii.

¹⁸Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.

¹⁸El a zis lui Zebah şi lui Ţalmuna: ,,Cum erau oamenii pe cari i-aţi ucis la Tabor?`` Ei au răspuns: ,,Erau ca tine, fiecare avea înfăţişarea unui fiu de împărat.``

¹⁹And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the LORD liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.

¹⁹El a zis: ,,Erau fraţii mei, fiii mamei mele. Viu este Domnul că, dacă i-aţi fi lăsat cu viaţă, nu v'aş ucide.``

²⁰And he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.

²⁰Şi a zis lui Ieter, întîiul lui născut: ,,Scoală-te, şi ucide -i!`` Dar tînărul nu şi -a scos sabia, pentrucă -i era teamă, căci era încă un copil.

²¹Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels' necks.

²¹Zebah şi Ţalmuna au zis: ,,Scoală-te tu însuţi şi ucide-ne! Căci cum e omul aşa e şi puterea lui.`` Şi Ghedeon s'a sculat, şi a ucis pe Zebah şi Ţalmuna. A luat apoi lunişoarele dela gîtul cămilelor lor.

²²Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.

²²Bărbaţii lui Israel au zis lui Ghedeon: ,,Domneşte peste noi, tu, şi fiul tău, şi fiul fiului tău, căci ne-ai izbăvit din mîna lui Madian.``

²³And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you.

²³Ghedeon le -a zis: ,,Eu nu voi domni peste voi, nici fiii mei nu vor domni peste voi, ci Domnul va domni peste voi.``

²⁴And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

²⁴Ghedeon le -a zis: ,,Am să vă fac o rugăminte: daţi-mi fiecare verigile de nas pe cari le-aţi luat ca pradă.`` -Vrăjmaşii aveau verigi de aur, căci erau Ismaeliţi. -

²⁵And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.

²⁵Ei au zis: ,,Ţi le vom da cu plăcere.`` Şi au întins o manta, pe care a aruncat fiecare verigile pe cari le prădase.

²⁶And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels' necks.

²⁶Greutatea verigilor de aur pe cari le -a cerut Ghedeon, a fost de o mie şapte sute de sicli de aur, afară de lunişoare, de cerceii de aur, şi hainele de purpură, pe cari le purtau împăraţii Madianului, şi afară de lănţişoarele dela gîtul cămilelor lor.

²⁷And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.

²⁷Ghedeon a făcut din ele un efod, şi l -a pus în cetatea lui, la Ofra, unde a ajuns o pricină de curvie pentru tot Israelul; şi a fost o cursă pentru Ghedeon şi pentru casa lui.

²⁸Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.

²⁸Madianul a fost smerit înaintea copiilor lui Israel, şi n'a mai ridicat capul. Şi ţara a avut odihnă patruzeci de ani, în timpul vieţii lui Ghedeon.

²⁹And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.

²⁹Ierubaal, fiul lui Ioas, s'a întors, şi a locuit în casa lui.

³⁰And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.

³⁰Ghedeon a avut şaptezeci de fii, ieşiţi din el, căci a avut mai multe neveste.

³¹And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.

³¹Ţiitoarea lui, care era la Sihem, i -a născut de asemenea un fiu, căruia i-au pus numele Abimelec.

³²And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

³²Ghedeon, fiul lui Ioas, a murit după o bătrîneţă fericită; şi a fost îngropat în mormîntul tatălui său Ioas, la Ofra, care era a familiei lui Abiezer.

³³And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god.

³³După moartea lui Ghedeon, copiii lui Israel au început iarăş să curvească cu Baalii şi au luat pe Baal-Berit ca dumnezeu al lor.

³⁴And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:

³⁴Copiii lui Israel nu şi-au adus aminte de Domnul, Dumnezeul lor, care -i izbăvise din mîna tuturor vrăjmaşilor cari -i înconjurau.

³⁵Neither showed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had showed unto Israel.

³⁵Şi n'au ţinut la casa lui Ierubaal, a lui Ghedeon, după tot binele pe care -l făcuse el lui Israel.
