¹Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,

¹Fiindcă mulţi s'au apucat să alcătuiască o istorisire amănunţită despre lucrurile cari s'au petrecut printre noi,

²Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;

²după cum ni le-au încredinţat ceice le-au văzut cu ochii lor dela început, şi au ajuns slujitori ai cuvîntului,

³It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,

³am găsit şi eu cu cale, prea alesule Teofile, după ce am făcut cercetări cu deamăruntul asupra tuturor acestor lucruri dela obîrşia lor, să ţi le scriu în şir unele după altele,

⁴That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.

⁴ca să poţi cunoaşte astfel temeinicia învăţăturilor, pe cari le-ai primit prin viu grai.

⁵THERE was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

⁵În zilele lui Irod, împăratul Iudeii, era un preot, numit Zaharia, din ceata lui Abia. Nevasta lui era din fetele lui Aaron, şi se chema Elisaveta.

⁶And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

⁶Amîndoi erau neprihăniţi înaintea lui Dumnezeu, şi păzeau fără pată toate poruncile şi toate rînduielile Domnului.

⁷And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

⁷N'aveau copii, pentrucă Elisaveta era stearpă; şi amîndoi erau înaintaţi în vîrstă.

⁸And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,

⁸Dar, pe cînd slujea Zaharia înaintea lui Dumnezeu, la rîndul cetei lui,

⁹According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

⁹după obiceiul preoţiei, a ieşit la sorţi să intre să tămîieze în Templul Domnului.

¹⁰And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

¹⁰În ceasul tămîierii, toată mulţimea norodului se ruga afară.

¹¹And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

¹¹Atunci un înger al Domnului s'a arătat lui Zaharia, şi a stătut în picioare la dreapta altarului pentru tămîiere.

¹²And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

¹²Zaharia s'a spăimîntat, cînd l -a văzut; şi l -a apucat frica.

¹³But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

¹³Dar îngerul i -a zis: ,,Nu te teme Zahario; fiindcă rugăciunea ta a fost ascultată. Nevastă-ta Elisaveta îţi va naşte un fiu, căruia îi vei pune numele Ioan.

¹⁴And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

¹⁴El va fi pentru tine o pricină de bucurie şi veselie, şi mulţi se vor bucura de naşterea lui.

¹⁵For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

¹⁵Căci va fi mare înaintea Domnului. Nu va bea nici vin, nici băutură ameţitoare, şi se va umplea de Duhul Sfînt încă din pîntecele maicii sale.

¹⁶And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

¹⁶El va întoarce pe mulţi din fiii lui Israel la Domnul, Dumnezeul lor.

¹⁷And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

¹⁷Va merge înaintea lui Dumnezeu, în duhul şi puterea lui Ilie, ca să întoarcă inimile părinţilor la copii, şi pe cei neascultători la umblarea în înţelepciunea celor neprihăniţi, ca să gătească Domnului un norod bine pregătit pentru El.``

¹⁸And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

¹⁸Zaharia a zis îngerului: ,,Din ce voi cunoaşte lucrul acesta? Fiindcă eu sînt bătrîn, şi nevastă-mea este înaintată în vîrstă.``

¹⁹And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

¹⁹Drept răspuns, îngerul i -a zis: ,,Eu sînt Gavril, care stau înaintea lui Dumnezeu; am fost trimes să-ţi vorbesc, şi să-ţi aduc această veste bună.

²⁰And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

²⁰Iată că vei fi mut, şi nu vei putea vorbi, pînă în ziua cînd se vor întîmpla aceste lucruri, pentrucă n'ai crezut cuvintele mele, cari se vor împlini la vremea lor.``

²¹And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

²¹Norodul însă aştepta pe Zaharia, şi se mira de zăbovirea lui în Templu.

²²And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.

²²Cînd a ieşit afară, nu putea să le vorbească; şi au înţeles că avusese o vedenie în Templu. El le făcea semne într'una, şi a rămas mut.

²³And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.

²³După ce i s'au împlinit zilele de slujbă, Zaharia s'a dus acasă.

²⁴And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

²⁴Peste cîtva timp, Elisaveta, nevasta lui, a rămas însărcinată, şi s'a ţinut ascunsă de tot cinci luni. ,,Căci``, zicea ea,

²⁵Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

²⁵,,iată ce mi -a făcut Domnul, cînd Şi -a aruncat ochii spre mine, ca să-mi ia ocara dintre oameni.``

²⁶And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

²⁶În luna a şasea, îngerul Gavril a fost trimes de Dumnezeu într'o cetate din Galilea, numită Nazaret,

²⁷To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

²⁷la o fecioară logodită cu un bărbat, numit Iosif, din casa lui David. Numele fecioarei era Maria.

²⁸And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

²⁸Îngerul a intrat la ea, şi a zis: ,,Plecăciune, ţie, căreia ţi s'a făcut mare har; Domnul este cu tine, binecuvîntată eşti tu între femei!``

²⁹And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

²⁹Turburată foarte mult de cuvintele acestea, Maria se întreba singură ce putea să însemneze urarea aceasta.

³⁰And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

³⁰Îngerul i -a zis: ,,Nu te teme, Marie; căci ai căpătat îndurare înaintea lui Dumnezeu.

³¹And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

³¹Şi iată că vei rămînea însărcinată, şi vei naşte un fiu, căruia îi vei pune numele Isus.

³²He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

³²El va fi mare, şi va fi chemat Fiul Celui Prea Înalt; şi Domnul Dumnezeu îi va da scaunul de domnie al tatălui Său David.

³³And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

³³Va împărăţi peste casa lui Iacov în veci, şi Împărăţia Lui nu va avea sfîrşit.``

³⁴Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

³⁴Maria a zis îngerului: ,,Cum se va face lucrul acesta, fiindcă eu nu ştiu de bărbat?``

³⁵And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

³⁵Îngerul i -a răspuns: ,,Duhul Sfînt Se va pogorî peste tine, şi puterea Celui Prea Înalt te va umbri. De aceea Sfîntul care Se va naşte din tine, va fi chemat Fiul lui Dumnezeu.

³⁶And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

³⁶Iată că Elisaveta, rudenia ta, a zămislit, şi ea, un fiu la bătrîneţe; şi ea, căreia i se zicea stearpă, este acum în a şasea lună.

³⁷For with God nothing shall be impossible.

³⁷Căci niciun cuvînt dela Dumnezeu nu este lipsit de putere.

³⁸And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

³⁸Maria a zis: ,,Iată, roaba Domnului; facă-mi-se după cuvintele tale!`` Şi îngerul a plecat dela ea.

³⁹And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

³⁹Maria s'a sculat chiar în zilele acelea, şi a plecat în grabă spre munţi, într'o cetate a lui Iuda.

⁴⁰And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

⁴⁰A intrat în casa lui Zaharia, şi a urat de bine Elisavetei.

⁴¹And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

⁴¹Cum a auzit Elisaveta urarea Mariei, i -a săltat pruncul în pîntece, şi Elisaveta s'a umplut de Duhul Sfînt.

⁴²And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

⁴²Ea a strigat cu glas tare: ,,Binecuvîntată eşti tu între femei, şi binecuvîntat este rodul pîntecelui tău.

⁴³And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

⁴³Cum mi -a fost dat mie să vină la mine maica Domnului meu?

⁴⁴For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

⁴⁴Fiindcă iată, cum mi -a ajuns la urechi glasul urării tale, mi -a săltat pruncul în pîntece de bucurie.

⁴⁵And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.

⁴⁵Ferice de aceea care a crezut; pentrucă lucrurile, cari i-au fost spuse din partea Domnului, se vor împlini.``

⁴⁶And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,

⁴⁶Şi Maria a zis: ,,Sufletul meu măreşte pe Domnul,

⁴⁷And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

⁴⁷şi mi se bucură duhul în Dumnezeu, Mîntuitorul meu,

⁴⁸For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

⁴⁸pentrucă a privit spre starea smerită a roabei Sale. Căci iată că deacum încolo, toate neamurile îmi vor zice fericită,

⁴⁹For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.

⁴⁹pentrucă Cel Atot Puternic a făcut lucruri mari pentru mine. Numele Lui este sfînt,

⁵⁰And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.

⁵⁰şi îndurarea Lui se întinde din neam în neam peste cei ce se tem de El.

⁵¹He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

⁵¹El a arătat putere cu braţul Lui; a risipit gîndurile, pe cari le aveau cei mîndri în inima lor.

⁵²He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.

⁵²A răsturnat pe cei puternici de pe scaunele lor de domnie, şi a înălţat pe cei smeriţi.

⁵³He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.

⁵³Pe cei flămînzi i -a săturat de bunătăţi, şi pe cei bogaţi i -a scos afară cu mînile goale.

⁵⁴He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;

⁵⁴A venit în ajutorul robului său Israel, căci Şi -a adus aminte de îndurarea Sa, -

⁵⁵As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

⁵⁵cum făgăduise părinţilor noştri, -faţă de Avraam şi sămînţa lui în veac.``

⁵⁶And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.

⁵⁶Maria a rămas împreună cu Elisaveta cam trei luni. Apoi s'a întors acasă.

⁵⁷Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

⁵⁷Elisavetei i s'a împlinit vremea să nască; şi a născut un fiu.

⁵⁸And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.

⁵⁸Vecinii şi rudele ei au auzit că Domnul a arătat mare îndurare faţă de ea, şi se bucurau împreună cu ea.

⁵⁹And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.

⁵⁹În ziua a opta, au venit să taie pruncul împrejur, şi voiau să -i pună numele Zaharia, după numele tatălui său.

⁶⁰And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.

⁶⁰Dar mama lui a luat cuvîntul, şi a zis: ,,Nu. Ci are să se cheme Ioan.``

⁶¹And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.

⁶¹Ei i-au zis: ,,Nimeni din rubedeniile tale nu poartă numele acesta.``

⁶²And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.

⁶²Şi au început să facă semne tatălui său, ca să ştie cum ar vrea să -i pună numele.

⁶³And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.

⁶³Zaharia a cerut o tăbliţă de scris, şi a scris, zicînd: ,,Numele lui este Ioan.`` Şi toţi s'au minunat.

⁶⁴And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.

⁶⁴În clipa aceea, i s'a deschis gura, i s'a deslegat limba, şi el vorbea şi binecuvînta pe Dumnezeu.

⁶⁵And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.

⁶⁵Pe toţi vecinii i -a apucat frica, şi în tot ţinutul acela muntos al Iudeii, se vorbea despre toate aceste lucruri.

⁶⁶And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.

⁶⁶Toţi ceice le auzeau, le păstrau în inima lor, şi ziceau: ,,Oare ce va fi pruncul acesta?`` Şi mîna Domnului era într'adevăr cu el.

⁶⁷And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

⁶⁷Zaharia, tatăl lui, s'a umplut de Duhul Sfînt, a proorocit, şi a zis:

⁶⁸Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,

⁶⁸,,Binecuvîntat este Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel, pentrucă a cercetat şi a răscumpărat pe poporul Său.

⁶⁹And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;

⁶⁹Şi ne -a ridicat o mîntuire puternică (Greceşte: un corn de mîntuire.) în casa robului Său David,

⁷⁰As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:

⁷⁰cum vestise prin gura sfinţilor Săi prooroci, cari au fost din vechime; -

⁷¹That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

⁷¹mîntuire de vrăjmaşii noştri şi din mîna tuturor celor ce ne urăsc!

⁷²To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;

⁷²Astfel Îşi arată El îndurarea faţă de părinţii noştri, şi Îşi aduce aminte de legămîntul Lui cel sfînt,

⁷³The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,

⁷³potrivit jurămîntului prin care Se jurase părintelui nostru Avraam,

⁷⁴That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,

⁷⁴că, dupăce ne va izbăvi din mîna vrăjmaşilor noştri, ne va îngădui să -I slujim fără frică,

⁷⁵In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

⁷⁵trăind înaintea Lui în sfinţenie şi neprihănire, în toate zilele vieţii noastre.

⁷⁶And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;

⁷⁶Şi tu, pruncule, vei fi chemat prooroc al Celui Prea Înalt. Căci vei merge înaintea Domnului, ca să pregăteşti căile Lui,

⁷⁷To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,

⁷⁷şi să dai poporului Său cunoştinţa mîntuirii, care stă în iertarea păcatelor lui; -

⁷⁸Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,

⁷⁸datorită marei îndurări a Dumnezeului nostru, în urma căreia ne -a cercetat Soarele care răsare din înălţime,

⁷⁹To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

⁷⁹ca să lumineze pe ceice zac în întunerecul şi în umbra morţii, şi să ne îndrepte picioarele pe calea păcii!``

⁸⁰And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

⁸⁰Iar pruncul creştea şi se întărea în duh. Şi a stat în locuri pustii pînă în ziua arătării lui înaintea lui Israel.
