¹Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,

²Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

²şi în zilele marilor preoţi Ana şi Caiafa, -Cuvîntul lui Dumnezeu a vorbit lui Ioan, fiul lui Zaharia în pustie.

³And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

³Şi Ioan a venit prin tot ţinutul din împrejurimile Iordanului, şi propovăduia botezul pocăinţei, pentru iertarea păcatelor,

⁴As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

⁴după cum este scris în cartea cuvintelor proorocului Isaia: ,,Iată glasul celui ce strigă în pustie: ,Pregătiţi calea Domnului, neteziţi -I cărările.

⁵Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;

⁵Orice vale va fi astupată, orice munte şi orice deal va fi prefăcut în loc neted; căile strîmbe vor fi îndreptate, şi drumurile zgronţuroase vor fi netezite.

⁶And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

⁶Şi orice făptură va vedea mîntuirea lui Dumnezeu.``

⁷Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

⁷Ioan zicea dar noroadelor, cari veneau să fie botezate de el: ,,Pui de năpîrci, cine v'a învăţat să fugiţi de mînia viitoare?

⁸Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

⁸Faceţi dar roduri vrednice de pocăinţa voastră, şi nu vă apucaţi să ziceţi în voi înşivă: ,Avem pe Avraam ca tată!` Căci vă spun că Dumnezeu din pietrele acestea poate să ridice fii lui Avraam.

⁹And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

⁹Securea a şi fost înfiptă la rădăcina pomilor: deci, orice pom care nu face roadă bună, este tăiat şi aruncat în foc.``

¹⁰And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?

¹⁰Noroadele îl întrebau, şi ziceau: ,,Atunci ce trebuie să facem?``

¹¹He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

¹¹Drept răspuns, el le zicea: ,,Cine are două haine, să împartă cu cine n'are nici una; şi cine are de mîncare, să facă la fel.``

¹²Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?

¹²Au venit şi nişte vameşi să fie botezaţi, şi i-au zis: ,,Învăţătorului, noi ce trebuie să facem?``

¹³And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.

¹³El le -a răspuns: ,,Să nu cereţi nimic mai mult peste ce v'a fost poruncit să luaţi.``

¹⁴And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

¹⁴Nişte oştaşi îl întrebau şi ei, şi ziceau: ,,Dar noi ce trebuie să facem?`` El le -a răspuns: ,,Să nu stoarceţi nimic dela nimeni prin ameninţări, nici să nu învinuiţi pe nimeni pe nedrept, ci să vă mulţămiţi cu lefurile voastre.``

¹⁵And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;

¹⁵Fiindcă norodul era în aşteptare, şi toţi se gîndeau în inimile lor cu privire la Ioan, dacă nu cumva este el Hristosul,

¹⁶John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

¹⁶Ioan, drept răspuns, a zis tuturor: ,,Cît despre mine, eu vă botez cu apă; dar vine Acela care este mai puternic decît mine, şi căruia eu nu sînt vrednic să -I desleg cureaua încălţămintelor. El vă va boteza cu Duhul Sfînt şi cu foc.

¹⁷Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

¹⁷Acela are lopata în mînă; Îşi va curăţi aria cu desăvîrşire, şi Îşi va strînge grîul în grînar, iar pleava o va arde într'un foc care nu se stinge.``

¹⁸And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.

¹⁸Astfel propovăduia Ioan norodului Evanghelia, şi -i dădea încă multe alte îndemnuri.

¹⁹But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,

¹⁹Dar cîrmuitorul Irod, care era mustrat de Ioan pentru Irodiada, nevasta fratelui său Filip, şi pentru toate relele pe cari le făcuse,

²⁰Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

²⁰a mai adăugat la toate celelalte rele şi pe acela că a închis pe Ioan în temniţă.

²¹Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

²¹După ce a fost botezat tot norodul, a fost botezat şi Isus; şi pe cînd Se ruga, s'a deschis cerul,

²²And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

²²şi Duhul Sfînt S'a pogorît peste El în chip trupesc, ca un porumbel. Şi din cer s'a auzit un glas, care zicea: ,,Tu eşti Fiul Meu prea iubit: în Tine Îmi găsesc toată plăcerea Mea!``

²³And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,
