¹Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:

¹A precestujúc Amfipolis a Apolloniu prišli do Tesaloniky, kde bola synagóga Židov.

²And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

²A Pavel podľa svojej obyčaje vošiel k nim. A po tri soboty hovoril s nimi z písem,

³Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

³otváral ich a predkladal, že Kristus musel trpieť a vstať z mŕtvych, a že toto je Kristus, Ježiš, ktorého vám ja zvestujem.

⁴And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

⁴A niektorí z nich uverili a boli losom Božím pridelení Pavlovi a Sílasovi i bohabojných Grékov veliké množstvo i popredných žien nemalý počet.

⁵But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

⁵Ale neveriaci Židia zapálení súc závisťou pribrali si niekoľko po trhu sa potulujúcich zlých mužov, sohnali zástup a pobúrili mesto urobiac útok na dom Jázonov hľadali ich vyviesť pred ľud.

⁶And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

⁶A keď ich nenašli, vliekli Jázona a niektorých bratov k náčelníkom mesta a kričali: Títo, ktorí búria celý svet, prišli aj sem,

⁷Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

⁷a Jázon ich prijal. A títo všetci robia proti nariadeniam cisára hovoriac, že je iný kráľom, Ježiš.

⁸And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

⁸A pobúrili zástup i náčelníkov mesta, ktorí to počuli.

⁹And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.

⁹Ale keď dostali od Jázona a od ostatných záruku, prepustili ich.

¹⁰And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

¹⁰A bratia hneď cez noc vyslali Pavla a Sílasa do Beree, ktorí prijdúc ta odišli do synagógy Židov.

¹¹These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

¹¹A tí boli šľachetnejší ako tí v Tesalonike a prijali slovo s celou ochotou a zkúmali písma každý deň, či je tomu tak.

¹²Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

¹²A tak uverili mnohí z nich, i gréckych žien popredných i mužov uveril nemalý počet.

¹³But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.

¹³Ale hneď ako zvedeli Židia z Tesaloniky, že Pavel i v Berei zvestoval slovo Božie, prišli aj tam nepokojiť a búriť zástupy.

¹⁴And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.

¹⁴Ale bratia potom hneď vyslali Pavla, aby išiel až k moru, ale i Sílas i Timoteus zostali tam.

¹⁵And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.

¹⁵A tí, ktorí odprevádzali Pavla, zaviedli ho až do Atén a dostanúc príkaz pre Sílasa a Timotea, aby čím najskôr prišli za ním, odišli.

¹⁶Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

¹⁶A kým ich Pavel čakal v Aténach, roznecoval sa v ňom jeho duch, keď videl, že je mesto plné modiel.

¹⁷Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

¹⁷Hovoril tedy v synagóge so Židmi i s bohabojnými inokmeňci i na tržisku každý deň s tými, ktorí sa ta práve nahodili.

¹⁸Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

¹⁸A dali sa s ním do hádky aj niektorí z epikurejských a stoických filozofov, mudrcov. A jedni vraveli: Čože to chce ten žvatláč povedať? A iní zase: Zdá sa byť zvestovateľom cudzích bohov. Lebo im zvestoval Ježiša a zmŕtvychvstanie.

¹⁹And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

¹⁹A pochytili ho a zaviedli na Areopág a povedali: Či môžeme zvedieť, čo a jaké je to nové učenie, ktoré to ty hovoríš?

²⁰For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

²⁰Lebo nesieš čosi čudného do našich uší. Radi by sme tedy zvedieť, čo to chce byť.

²¹(For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

²¹Lebo všetci Atéňania i tam bývajúci cudzinci na nič iného nestihnú ako alebo vravieť niečo alebo počúvať niečo nového.

²²Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

²²Vtedy si zastal Pavel naprostred Areopágu a povedal: Mužovia Atéňania, podľa všetkého vidím, že ste vy neobyčajne nábožní ľudia.

²³For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

²³Lebo jako som chodil po meste a obzeral som vaše posviatnosti, ktorým dávate božskú česť, našiel som aj oltár, na ktorom je napísané: Neznámemu Bohu. Toho teda, ktorého ctíte bez toho, žeby ste ho znali, toho vám ja zvestujem.

²⁴God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

²⁴Bôh, ktorý učinil svet a všetko, čo je na ňom, súc Pánom nebies a zeme nebýva v chrámoch, učinených rukou,

²⁵Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

²⁵ani sa mu neslúži ľudskými rukami, jako čo by niečo potreboval, lebo veď on sám dáva všetkému život a dych a všetko

²⁶And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

²⁶a učinil z jednej krvi všetok národ ľudí, aby bývali na celej tvári zeme, určiac vopred odriadené časy a medze ich bývania,

²⁷That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

²⁷aby hľadali Pána, ak by ho snáď len nejako nahmatali a našli, hoci nie je ďaleko od niktorého z nás.

²⁸For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

²⁸Lebo veď v ňom žijeme, hýbeme sa a sme, jako aj ktorísi z vašich básnikov povedali: Lebo i jeho rodina sme.

²⁹Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

²⁹Tedy keď sme rodinou Božou, nemáme sa domnievať, že by Božstvo bolo podobné zlatu alebo striebru alebo kameňu, rytine, ktorú vytvorilo remeslo a ľudský výmysel.

³⁰And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

³⁰Bôh tedy prehliadol časy nevedomosti, ale teraz zvestuje ľuďom, všetkým všade, aby činili pokánie,

³¹Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

³¹pretože ustanovil deň, v ktorom bude súdiť celý svet v spravedlivosti v osobe muža, ktorého určil nato, a podáva všetkým ľuďom vieru vzkriesiac ho z mŕtvych.

³²And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

³²Ale keď počuli o vzkriesení z mŕtvych, jedni sa posmievali, a druhí povedali: Vypočujeme ťa o tom aj po druhé.

³³So Paul departed from among them.

³³Takto vyšiel Pavel zpomedzi nich.

³⁴Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

³⁴No, niektorí mužovia sa pripojili k nemu a uverili, medzi ktorými bol aj Dionýzius Areopagský aj žena, menom Damaris, a iní s nimi.
