¹And it was told Joab, Behold, the king weepeth and mourneth for Absalom.

¹In oznanili so Joabu: Glej, kralj joče in žaluje po Absalomu!

²And the victory that day was turned into mourning unto all the people: for the people heard say that day how the king was grieved for his son.

²In zmaga se je tisti dan obrnila v žalost vsemu ljudstvu, zakaj ljudstvo je slišalo ta dan, da se je pravilo: Kralju je žal za svojega sina.

³And the people gat them by stealth that day into the city, as people being ashamed steal away when they flee in battle.

³In ljudstvo se po tihem prikrade v mesto ta dan, kakor se ljudstvo s sramom ukrade, ko je bežalo v boju.

⁴But the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!

⁴Kralj pa si je zagrnil obraz in vpil z velikim glasom: O sin moj Absalom! Absalom, moj sin, moj sin!

⁵And Joab came into the house to the king, and said, Thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy servants, which this day have saved thy life, and the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and the lives of thy concubines;

⁵In pride Joab v hišo h kralju in reče: Rdečico si danes pognal v obraze vseh hlapcev svojih, ki so ta dan rešili življenje tvoje in tvojih sinov in hčera, življenje tvojih žen in priležnic,

⁶In that thou lovest thine enemies, and hatest thy friends. For thou hast declared this day, that thou regardest neither princes nor servants: for this day I perceive, that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased thee well.

⁶s tem, da ljubiš tiste, ki te sovražijo, in mrziš te, ki te ljubijo. Zakaj pokazal si danes, da ne maraš za svoje kneze in hlapce; kajti danes vidim, ako bi le Absalom bil ostal živ, mi vsi pa bi bili pomrli danes, tebi bi bilo prav.

⁷Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak comfortably unto thy servants: for I swear by the LORD, if thou go not forth, there will not tarry one with thee this night: and that will be worse unto thee than all the evil that befell thee from thy youth until now.

⁷Sedaj pa vstani, pojdi ven in govori prijazno hlapcem svojim! Zakaj prisegam pri GOSPODU: Ako ne pojdeš ven, ne ostane nocoj ne eden mož pri tebi, in to bo hujše zate nego vse hudo, ki te je zadelo od mladosti tvoje do sedaj.

⁸Then the king arose, and sat in the gate. And they told unto all the people, saying, Behold, the king doth sit in the gate. And all the people came before the king: for Israel had fled every man to his tent.

⁸Tedaj vstane kralj in sede med vrata. In oznanijo vsemu ljudstvu, rekoč: Glej, kralj sedi med vrati. In vse ljudstvo je prišlo pred kralja. Izrael pa je bil bežal, vsak v šator svoj.

⁹And all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, The king saved us out of the hand of our enemies, and he delivered us out of the hand of the Philistines; and now he is fled out of the land for Absalom.

⁹In vse ljudstvo se je prepiralo po vseh rodovih Izraelovih, govoreč: Kralj nas je otel iz roke sovražnikov naših ter nas je oprostil pesti Filistejcev, in zdaj je moral bežati iz dežele pred Absalomom.

¹⁰And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why speak ye not a word of bringing the king back?

¹⁰Absalom pa, ki smo ga pomazilili, da bodi nad nami, je mrtev na bojišču. Sedaj pa, zakaj ne izpregovorite besede, da pripeljemo kralja nazaj!

¹¹And king David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why are ye the last to bring the king back to his house? seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king, even to his house.

¹¹In kralj David pošlje k Zadoku in Abiatarju, duhovnikoma, veleč: Govorita starejšinam Judovim in recita: Zakaj hočete biti poslednji, da bi pripeljali kralja nazaj v hišo njegovo! Kaj ti govor vsega Izraela se je donesel kralju, da ga hočejo privesti v hišo njegovo.

¹²Ye are my brethren, ye are my bones and my flesh: wherefore then are ye the last to bring back the king?

¹²Bratje moji ste, moja kost in meso, čemu bi torej bili poslednji, ko bodo peljali kralja nazaj!

¹³And say ye to Amasa, Art thou not of my bone, and of my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the room of Joab.

¹³In Amasu recita: Nisi li moja kost in meso? Bog mi stori to in še to prideni, ako ne boš vse svoje žive dni poveljnik vojske pred menoj na Joabovem mestu.

¹⁴And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as the heart of one man; so that they sent this word unto the king, Return thou, and all thy servants.

¹⁴In nagnil je vseh Judovih mož srce, kakor srce enega moža, da so sporočili kralju: Vrni se ti in vsi hlapci tvoji!

¹⁵So the king returned, and came to Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to conduct the king over Jordan.

¹⁵Vrne se torej kralj in pride k Jordanu. In Judovci dospejo v Gilgal, gredoč naproti kralju, da ga prepeljejo čez Jordan.

¹⁶And Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite, which was of Bahurim, hasted and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David.

¹⁶In Simej, sin Gerov, Benjaminec, ki je prebival v Bahurimu, pohiti in pride doli z možmi Judovimi naproti kralju Davidu.

¹⁷And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went over Jordan before the king.

¹⁷In bilo je ž njim tisoč mož iz Benjamina in Ziba, Savlove hiše služabnik, in petnajst sinov njegovih in dvajset hlapcev njegovih, in šli so čez Jordan pred kraljem.

¹⁸And there went over a ferry boat to carry over the king's household, and to do what he thought good. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, as he was come over Jordan;

¹⁸Napravili so namreč brod, da prepeljejo kraljevo družino in store, kar mu je ugajalo. Simej pa, sin Gerov, pade pred kralja, ko se je hotel peljati čez Jordan,

¹⁹And said unto the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity unto me, neither do thou remember that which thy servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.

¹⁹in reče kralju: Ne prištevaj mi, gospod moj, krivice, in ne spominjaj se, kako se je pregrešil hlapec tvoj tisti dan, ko je bil šel gospod moj, kralj, iz Jeruzalema, in naj ne ohrani tega kralj v srcu.

²⁰For thy servant doth know that I have sinned: therefore, behold, I am come the first this day of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.

²⁰Zakaj hlapec tvoj spoznava, da sem grešil; in poglej, jaz sem danes prvi šel od vse hiše Jožefove, da pridem doli naproti gospodu svojemu, kralju.

²¹But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD's anointed?

²¹Abisaj pa, Zervijin sin, odgovori in reče: Ne bo li Simej usmrčen zato, ker je preklinjal maziljenca GOSPODOVEGA?

²²And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?

²²A David veli: Kaj imam z vama opraviti, sinova Zervije, da mi danes hočeta biti nasprotnika? Ali naj danes umre kdo v Izraelu? Ne vem li namreč, da sem danes zopet kralj nad Izraelom?

²³Therefore the king said unto Shimei, Thou shalt not die. And the king sware unto him.

²³In Simeju reče kralj: Ne umreš. In kralj mu je prisegel.

²⁴And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace.

²⁴Mefiboset, Savlov sin, je tudi prišel doli kralju naproti. Ni si pa snažil nog, ne ravnal brade, ne pral obleke od dne, ko je bil kralj odšel, do dne, ko se je vrnil domov v miru.

²⁵And it came to pass, when he was come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said unto him, Wherefore wentest not thou with me, Mephibosheth?

²⁵In zgodi se, ko pride v Jeruzalem kralju naproti, da ga kralj vpraša: Zakaj nisi šel z menoj, Mefiboset?

²⁶And he answered, My lord, O king, my servant deceived me: for thy servant said, I will saddle me an ass, that I may ride thereon, and go to the king; because thy servant is lame.

²⁶On pa odgovori: O gospod moj, kralj, hlapec moj me je okanil! Zakaj hlapec tvoj je dejal: Osedlam si osla, da bom jezdil na njem in šel h kralju, ker hlapec tvoj je hrom.

²⁷And he hath slandered thy servant unto my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in thine eyes.

²⁷A on je še ovadil hlapca tvojega pred gospodom mojim, kraljem. Ali gospod moj, kralj, je kakor angel Božji! Stóri torej, kar se ti dobro vidi.

²⁸For all of my father's house were but dead men before my lord the king: yet didst thou set thy servant among them that did eat at thine own table. What right therefore have I yet to cry any more unto the king?

²⁸Zakaj očeta mojega vsa družina ni bila nič drugega kakor ljudje, smrti izročeni pred gospodom mojim, kraljem; a vendar si posadil hlapca svojega med tiste, ki jedo pri mizi tvoji. Kaj imam torej še pravice, da bi dalje vpil h kralju?

²⁹And the king said unto him, Why speakest thou any more of thy matters? I have said, Thou and Ziba divide the land.

²⁹In kralj mu veli: Kaj toliko govoriš o svojih rečeh? Rekel sem: Ti in Ziba si vkup delita tiste njive!

³⁰And Mephibosheth said unto the king, Yea, let him take all, forasmuch as my lord the king is come again in peace unto his own house.

³⁰In Mefiboset reče kralju: Lahko si tudi vse vzame, samo da se je gospod moj, kralj, vrnil v miru v hišo svojo!

³¹And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim, and went over Jordan with the king, to conduct him over Jordan.

³¹In Barzilaj Gileadčan je prišel doli iz Rogelima in je šel s kraljem čez Jordan, da bi ga spremil čez Jordan.

³²Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even fourscore years old: and he had provided the king of sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man.

³²Barzilaj pa je bil silno star, dobrih osemdeset let, in je oskrboval kralja z živežem, dokler je bival v Mahanaimu, kajti bil je jako bogat mož.

³³And the king said unto Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will feed thee with me in Jerusalem.

³³In kralj veli Barzilaju: Pojdi z menoj na ono stran in hočem te oskrbeti pri sebi v Jeruzalemu.

³⁴And Barzillai said unto the king, How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem?

³⁴Barzilaj pa reče kralju: Koliko je še dni življenja mojega, da bi šel s kraljem gori v Jeruzalem?

³⁵I am this day fourscore years old: and can I discern between good and evil? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king?

³⁵Osemdeset let sem sedaj star: morem li razločevati med dobrim in hudim? More li hlapcu tvojemu tekniti, kar bo jedel in kar bo pil? Morem li še poslušati glas pevcev in pevk? Čemu naj torej bode hlapec tvoj še v nadlego gospodu svojemu, kralju?

³⁶Thy servant will go a little way over Jordan with the king: and why should the king recompense it me with such a reward?

³⁶Hlapec tvoj je samo hotel malo spremiti kralja čez Jordan, in zakaj bi mi kralj podelil tako povračilo?

³⁷Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.

³⁷Naj se sme, prosim, vrniti hlapec tvoj, da umrjem v mestu svojem, pri grobu očeta svojega in matere svoje. A glej, tu je hlapec tvoj Kimham, ta naj gre na ono stran z mojim gospodom kraljem, in njemu stóri, kar se ti vidi prav.

³⁸And the king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good unto thee: and whatsoever thou shalt require of me, that will I do for thee.

³⁸In kralj odgovori: Kimham naj torej gre z menoj, in storiti mu hočem, kar je dobro v tvojih očeh; tudi vse, česar boš želel od mene, storim zate.

³⁹And all the people went over Jordan. And when the king was come over, the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned unto his own place.

³⁹In ko je prešlo vse ljudstvo čez Jordan in je tudi kralj bil na oni strani, poljubi kralj Barzilaja in ga blagoslovi. On pa se vrne v svoj kraj.

⁴⁰Then the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him: and all the people of Judah conducted the king, and also half the people of Israel.

⁴⁰Kralj pa je šel čez v Gilgal in Kimham je šel ž njim; in vse ljudstvo Judovo je spremljalo kralja na ono stran, tudi polovica ljudstva Izraelovega.

⁴¹And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said unto the king, Why have our brethren the men of Judah stolen thee away, and have brought the king, and his household, and all David's men with him, over Jordan?

⁴¹In glej, vsi možje Izraelovi pridejo h kralju in mu reko: Zakaj so te ukradli bratje naši, možje Judovi, in so prepeljali kralja in družino njegovo čez Jordan in vse može Davidove ž njim?

⁴²And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of kin to us: wherefore then be ye angry for this matter? have we eaten at all of the king's cost? or hath he given us any gift?

⁴²A vsi možje Judovi odgovore možem Izraelovim: Kralj je nam bliže! Zakaj se srdite zato? Ali smo dobili kaj kraljeve hrane ali kako darilo od njega?Možje Izraelovi pa odgovore možem Judovim in reko: Mi imamo desetkrat več pri kralju, in tudi Davidu smo več nego vi, zakaj ste nas torej zaničevali? In nismo li mi prvi govorili, da privedemo nazaj kralja svojega? Ali besede mož Judovih so bile trše nego mož Izraelovih besede.

⁴³And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than ye: why then did ye despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king? And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.

⁴³Možje Izraelovi pa odgovore možem Judovim in reko: Mi imamo desetkrat več pri kralju, in tudi Davidu smo več nego vi, zakaj ste nas torej zaničevali? In nismo li mi prvi govorili, da privedemo nazaj kralja svojega? Ali besede mož Judovih so bile trše nego mož Izraelovih besede.
