¹Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:

²And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

²In Pavel gre po svoji navadi k njim in se razgovarja ž njimi tri sobote na podlagi pisem,

³Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

³razodevajoč in dokazujoč, da je moral Kristus trpeti in vstati iz mrtvih, in da ‚ta Jezus, ki ga vam jaz oznanjujem, je Kristus‘.

⁴And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

⁴In nekateri izmed njih so se dali prepričati in so se pridružili Pavlu in Sili, tudi pobožnih Grkov velika množica in imenitnih žen ne malo.

⁵But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

⁵Ali Jude je zavist prevzela, in ko so privzeli nekaj hudobnih mož izmed druhali in zbrali trumo, so napravili vstajo v mestu. In obstopijo hišo Jazonovo in ju iščejo, da bi ju pripeljali pred ljudstvo.

⁶And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

⁶Ko pa ju niso našli, privlečejo Jazona in nekatere brate pred mestne poglavarje, vpijoč: Ti, ki ves svet narobe prevračajo, ti so tudi sem prišli,

⁷Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

⁷in Jazon jih je sprejel; in ti vsi delajo zoper cesarjeve postave, govoreč, da je drug kralj, namreč Jezus.

⁸And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

⁸Tako vznemirijo ljudstvo in mestne poglavarje, ki so to poslušali.

⁹And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.

⁹A ko so prejeli zadoščenje od Jazona in drugih, so jih pustili.

¹⁰And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

¹⁰Bratje pa naglo po noči odpravijo Pavla in Sila v Berejo. Ko prideta tja, gresta v shodnico Judov.

¹¹These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

¹¹Ti so bili blažji od Solunčanov; ti so sprejeli besedo z vsem poželenjem in so vsak dan preiskovali pisma, če je temu tako.

¹²Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

¹²In tako jih je veliko izmed njih sprejelo vero, tudi odličnih grških žen in mož ne malo.

¹³But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.

¹³Ko so pa Judje v Solunu zvedeli, da oznanjuje Pavel besedo Božjo tudi v Bereji, pridejo tudi tja, da nahujskajo in vznemirijo ljudstvo.

¹⁴And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.

¹⁴Ali bratje so tedaj Pavla naglo odpravili, da je šel v primorje; a Sila in Timotej sta ostala tam.

¹⁵And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.

¹⁵Ti pa, ki so Pavla spremljali, so ga pripeljali do Aten; in ko so prejeli sporočilo od Sila in Timoteja, naj bi kar najhitreje prišla k njemu, so se vrnili.

¹⁶Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

¹⁶Ko ju je pa Pavel čakal v Atenah, se togoti duh njegov v njem, ko vidi, da je mesto polno malikov.

¹⁷Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

¹⁷Razgovarja se torej v shodnici z Judi in pobožnimi ter na trgu vsak dan s tistimi, na katere se je nameril.

¹⁸Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

¹⁸A tudi nekateri izmed epikurejskih in stoiških modrijanov so se prepirali ž njim; in nekateri so govorili: Kaj hoče ta kvasač povedati? A drugi: Zdi se, da je oznanjevalec tujih bogov - ker jim je oznanjeval evangelij o Jezusu in vstajenju.

¹⁹And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

¹⁹In ga vzemo in odpeljejo na Areopag [T. j. Arejev (Martov) grič, sodišče in občno shajališče.], govoreč: Moremo li zvedeti, kakšen je ta novi nauk, ki ga ti oznanjuješ?

²⁰For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

²⁰Kajti nekaj čudnega nam prinašaš v ušesa; zato hočemo zvedeti, kaj če to biti.

²¹(For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

²¹Vsi Atenčani in tujci, ki so tam bivali, niso pa za nič drugega tolikanj marali, nego pripovedovati ali poslušati kaj novega.

²²Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

²²Ustopivši se pa sredi Areopaga, reče Pavel: Možje Atenčani, po vsem vidim, da ste nekako prebogaboječi.

²³For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

²³Ko sem se namreč izprehajal po mestu in ogledoval svetišča vaša, sem našel tudi oltar, ki je na njem bilo napisano: Nepoznanemu Bogu. Kar torej častite, dasi tega ne poznate, to vam jaz oznanjujem.

²⁴God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

²⁴Bog, ki je ustvaril svet in vse, kar je na njem, on, ki je neba in zemlje Gospodar, ne prebiva v svetiščih, ki so z rokami narejena;

²⁵Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

²⁵tudi se mu ne streže s človeškimi rokami, kakor da bi česa potreboval, ko sam daje vsem življenje in dihanje in vse;

²⁶And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

²⁶in je naredil, da iz ene krvi ves rod človeški prebiva po vsem licu zemlje, določivši odmenjene čase in meje njih prebivanju:

²⁷That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

²⁷da bi iskali Boga, ne bi ga li kako otipali in našli, ko vendar ni daleč nobenemu od nas.

²⁸For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

²⁸Zakaj v njem živimo in se gibljemo in smo, kakor so tudi nekateri vaših pesnikov rekli: Saj tudi rodu njegovega smo.

²⁹Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

²⁹Ker smo torej Božjega rodu, ne smemo misliti, da je božanstvo podobno zlatu ali srebru ali kamenu, obdelanemu po umetelnosti in iznajdljivosti človeški.

³⁰And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

³⁰Bog torej ukazuje sedaj, ne ozirajoč se na čase nevednosti, vsem ljudem povsod, naj se izpokore;

³¹Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

³¹zato ker je določil dan, ob katerem bo sodil vesoljni svet v pravičnosti po možu, ki ga je za to odločil, podavši vero vsem s tem, da ga je obudil iz mrtvih.

³²And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

³²Ko so pa slišali o vstajenju mrtvih, so se nekateri posmehovali, a drugi so rekli: O tem te bomo v drugič slišali.

³³So Paul departed from among them.

³³In tako je Pavel odšel izmed njih.A nekateri možje so se mu pridružili in sprejeli vero; med njimi je bil tudi Dionizij Areopagit in žena po imenu Damara, in drugi ž njima.

³⁴Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

³⁴A nekateri možje so se mu pridružili in sprejeli vero; med njimi je bil tudi Dionizij Areopagit in žena po imenu Damara, in drugi ž njima.
