¹Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you.

¹Možje, bratje in očetje, poslušajte sedaj moj zagovor proti vam!

²(And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)

²Ko pa slišijo, da jim v hebrejskem jeziku govori, so še bolj tiho. In on reče:

³I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.

³Jaz sem mož Jud, rojen v Tarsu v Ciliciji, odgojen pa v tem mestu pri nogah Gamalielovih, poučen po natančnosti postave naših očetov, in bil sem vnet za Boga, kakor ste vsi vi danes,

⁴And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

⁴ki sem preganjal ta pot celó do smrti, ko sem može in žene vezal in v ječo izročal,

⁵As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.

⁵kakor mi to more izpričati tudi veliki duhovnik in vse starejšinstvo; od katerih sem prejel tudi pisem do bratov v Damasku in sem tja šel, da bi pripeljal tudi tiste, ki so tam bili, zvezane v Jeruzalem, da bi jih kaznovali.

⁶And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.

⁶Zgodi se pa, ko grem in se bližam Damasku, da me okoli poldne nagloma obsije velika svetloba z neba;

⁷And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

⁷in padem na tla in slišim glas, da mi pravi: Savel, Savel, kaj me preganjaš?

⁸And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.

⁸Jaz pa odgovorim: Kdo si, Gospod? In mi reče: Jaz sem Jezus Nazarečan, ki ga ti preganjaš.

⁹And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.

⁹Tisti pa, ki so bili z menoj, so sicer videli svetlobo, ali glasu njega, ki mi je govoril, niso slišali.

¹⁰And I said, What shall I do, LORD? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.

¹⁰In rečem: Kaj naj storim, Gospod? Gospod pa mi veli: Vstani in pojdi v Damask, in tam se ti pove o vsem, kar ti je odločeno, da storiš.

¹¹And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.

¹¹Ko pa nisem videl od bleščeče te svetlobe, so me peljali za roko, ki so bili z menoj, in sem prišel v Damask.

¹²And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,

¹²Neki Ananija pa, mož pobožen po postavi, ki ima dobro pričevanje od vseh Judov, ki tam prebivajo,

¹³Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.

¹³pride k meni, pristopi in mi reče: Savel, brat, izpregledaj! In tisto uro sem izpregledal in pogledal nanj.

¹⁴And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.

¹⁴On pa reče: Bog očetov naših te je vnaprej določil, da spoznaš voljo njegovo in vidiš Pravičnega in slišiš glas iz ust njegovih;

¹⁵For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.

¹⁵kajti priča mu boš pri vseh ljudeh o tem, kar si videl in slišal.

¹⁶And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

¹⁶In sedaj, kaj se obotavljaš? Vstani, daj se krstiti in operi grehe svoje, kličoč ime Gospodovo.

¹⁷And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance;

¹⁷Zgodi se pa, ko sem se bil vrnil v Jeruzalem in sem v templju molil, da sem se zamaknil,

¹⁸And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.

¹⁸in videl sem ga, da mi pravi: Pohiti in odidi naglo iz Jeruzalema, ker ne sprejmo pričevanja tvojega o meni.

¹⁹And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:

¹⁹In jaz rečem: Gospod, sami vedo, da sem jaz zapiral v ječe in tepel po shodnicah te, ki verujejo v tebe;

²⁰And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.

²⁰in ko se je prelivala kri Štefana, pričevalca tvojega, sem tudi jaz stal zraven in sem se ž njimi veselil smrti njegove ter varoval oblačila tistih, ki so ga pobijali.

²¹And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.

²¹In veli mi: Pojdi, kajti jaz te pošljem daleč tja med pogane.

²²And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.

²²In poslušali so ga do te besede, in tu povzdignejo glas in kriče: Proč z zemlje s takšnim! ker ni prav, da živi.

²³And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air,

²³Ko so pa vpili in raz sebe metali oblačila in prah lučali kvišku,

²⁴The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him.

²⁴ga ukaže tisočnik odpeljati v grad, rekši, naj ga mučijo z biči, da bi zvedel, kaj je vzrok, da tako vpijejo nad njim.

²⁵And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?

²⁵Ko so ga pa z jermeni pritegnili, reče Pavel stotniku, ki je zraven stal: Smete li človeka Rimljana, in to še ne obsojenega bičati?

²⁶When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.

²⁶Ko pa sliši to stotnik, pristopi in sporoči tisočniku, rekoč: Kaj boš storil? Ta človek namreč je Rimljan.

²⁷Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.

²⁷Pristopi pa tisočnik in mu reče: Povej mi, če si ti Rimljan? On pa reče: Sem.

²⁸And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.

²⁸In tisočnik odgovori: Jaz sem za veliko denarja pridobil to državljanstvo. A Pavel reče: Jaz sem se pa tudi rodil Rimljan.

²⁹Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.

²⁹Tedaj precej odstopijo od njega, ki so ga imeli mučiti; pa tudi tisočnik se zboji, ko je zvedel, da je Rimljan in da ga je dal zvezati.Drugi dan pa, ker je hotel za gotovo zvedeti, za kaj ga Judje tožijo, ga oprosti vezi in ukaže priti višjim duhovnikom in vsemu velikemu zboru. In pripelje Pavla doli in ga postavi mednje.

³⁰On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.

³⁰Drugi dan pa, ker je hotel za gotovo zvedeti, za kaj ga Judje tožijo, ga oprosti vezi in ukaže priti višjim duhovnikom in vsemu velikemu zboru. In pripelje Pavla doli in ga postavi mednje.
