¹Then said the high priest, Are these things so?

¹In veliki duhovnik reče: Je li to tako?

²And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,

²On pa reče: Možje, bratje in očetje, poslušajte! Bog slave se je prikazal očetu našemu Abrahamu, ko je bil v Mezopotamiji, preden se je nastanil v Haranu,

³And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.

³in mu je rekel: Odidi iz zemlje svoje in od rodovine svoje, in pojdi v zemljo, ki ti jo pokažem.

⁴Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.

⁴Tedaj je odšel iz zemlje Kaldejske in se je nastanil v Haranu. In odtod, ko je bil oče njegov umrl, ga je Bog preselil v to zemljo, v kateri vi sedaj prebivate.

⁵And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

⁵In ni mu dal dediščine v njej, še za stopinjo noge ne, in jo je obljubil dati njemu v posest in semenu njegovemu za njim, ko še ni imel sina.

⁶And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years.

⁶Rekel je pa Bog tako: „Seme tvoje bo priseljeno v tuji zemlji, in sužnosti ga podvržejo in hudo bodo ravnali ž njim štiristo let.

⁷And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place.

⁷Toda narod, ki mu bodo sužnjevali, bom sodil jaz, je dejal Bog; in potem izidejo in bodo meni služili na tem mestu“.

⁸And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.

⁸In dal mu je zavezo obreze; in tako je rodil Izaka in ga je obrezal osmi dan, in Izak Jakoba, in Jakob dvanajstere očake.

⁹And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,

⁹In očaki so iz nevoščljivosti prodali Jožefa v Egipt; a Bog je bil ž njim

¹⁰And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

¹⁰in ga je rešil iz vseh nadlog njegovih in mu dal milost in modrost pred Faraonom, kraljem egiptovskim, ki ga je postavil za poglavarja nad Egiptom in vso hišo svojo.

¹¹Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance.

¹¹Prišla pa je lakota nad vso zemljo Egiptovsko in Kanaansko in velika nadloga; in niso našli živeža očetje naši.

¹²But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.

¹²Ko pa je slišal Jakob, da je žita v Egiptu, je poslal tja očete naše prvikrat;

¹³And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph's kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.

¹³in v drugo so spoznali Jožefa bratje njegovi, in znana je postala Faraonu rodovina Jožefova.

¹⁴Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.

¹⁴Pošlje pa Jožef in pokliče očeta svojega Jakoba in vse sorodstvo svoje, petinsedemdeset duš.

¹⁵So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers,

¹⁵In prišel je Jakob doli v Egipt, in tam je umrl on in očetje naši;

¹⁶And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.

¹⁶in prinesli so jih v Sihem in položili v grob, ki ga je kupil Abraham za ceno v srebru od sinov Hemorjevih v Sihemu.

¹⁷But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,

¹⁷Ko se je pa bližal čas obljube, ki jo je prisegel Bog Abrahamu, je raslo ljudstvo in se množilo v Egiptu,

¹⁸Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.

¹⁸dokler ni začel vladati v Egiptu drug kralj, ki ni poznal Jožefa.

¹⁹The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.

¹⁹Ta je zvijačno ravnal z rodom našim in zatiral očete naše, da so morali izpostavljati otroke svoje, da bi ne ostali živi.

²⁰In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father's house three months:

²⁰V tem času se je rodil Mojzes in je bil prijeten [Dobesedno: lep.] Bogu; in tri mesece so ga redili v hiši očeta njegovega.

²¹And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.

²¹A ko je bil izpostavljen, ga je vzela hči Faraonova in ga je odgojila sebi za sina.

²²And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.

²²In naučil se je Mojzes vse modrosti Egipčanov, in je bil mogočen v svojih besedah in dejanjih.

²³And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.

²³Ko je pa dopolnil štirideset let, mu je prišlo na misel, obiskati brate svoje, sinove Izraelove.

²⁴And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:

²⁴In ko je videl nekoga, da trpi krivico, ga je obranil in v maščevanje tega, ki je krivico trpel, je ubil Egipčana.

²⁵For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.

²⁵Menil je pa, da njegovi bratje umejo, da jim hoče Bog po njegovi roki dati odrešenje; toda oni niso tega razumeli.

²⁶And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?

²⁶A drugi dan je prišel k njim, ko so se prepirali, in jih je miril, rekoč: Možje, vi ste bratje; zakaj delate krivico drug drugemu?

²⁷But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?

²⁷Tisti pa, ki je delal krivico bližnjemu, ga odpahne, rekoč: „Kdo te je postavil za poglavarja in sodnika nad nami?

²⁸Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?

²⁸Ali me hočeš ubiti, kakor si včeraj ubil Egipčana?“

²⁹Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.

²⁹Mojzes je pa pobegnil na to besedo in je bil tujec v zemlji Madianski, kjer je rodil dva sina.

³⁰And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.

³⁰In ko se je dopolnilo štirideset let, se mu je prikazal v puščavi gore Sinajske angel v plamenu gorečega grma.

³¹When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the LORD came unto him,

³¹Ko je pa Mojzes to videl, se je začudil prikazni; in ko pristopi, da bi pogledal, se mu oglasi glas Gospodov:

³²Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.

³²„Jaz sem Bog očetov tvojih, Bog Abrahamov in Izakov in Jakobov“. Mojzes pa strepeta in si ne upa tja pogledati.

³³Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.

³³Reče pa mu Gospod: „Sezuj obuvalo z nog svojih; kajti mesto, ki na njem stojiš, je sveta zemlja.

³⁴I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.

³⁴Dobro sem videl stisko ljudstva svojega, ki je v Egiptu, in njih zdihovanje sem slišal; in stopil sem doli, da jih rešim. In sedaj pridi, pošljem te v Egipt“.

³⁵This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.

³⁵Tega Mojzesa, ki so se ga bili odrekli, rekoč: Kdo te je postavil za poglavarja in sodnika? tega je Bog poslal kot poglavarja in odrešenika s pomočno roko angela, ki se mu je bil prikazal v grmu.

³⁶He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

³⁶Ta jih je izpeljal, delajoč čudeže in znamenja v Egiptu in na Rdečem morju in v puščavi štirideset let.

³⁷This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.

³⁷Ta je tisti Mojzes, ki je rekel sinovom Izraelovim: „Proroka vam obudi Gospod Bog izmed bratov vaših kakor mene“.

³⁸This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:

³⁸Ta je tisti, ki je bil pri zboru v puščavi z angelom, ki mu je govoril na gori Sinajski, in z očeti našimi; tisti, ki je prejel besede življenja, da nam jih da;

³⁹To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,

³⁹ki mu pa niso hoteli biti pokorni očetje naši, ampak so ga zavrgli in obrnili srca svoja v Egipt,

⁴⁰Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

⁴⁰rekši Aronu: „Naredi nam bogove, ki naj hodijo pred nami; zakaj temu Mojzesu, ki nas je izpeljal iz zemlje Egiptovske, ne vemo, kaj se mu je zgodilo“.

⁴¹And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.

⁴¹In ulili so tele tiste dni in so darovali daritev maliku in se veselili izdelka svojih rok.

⁴²Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?

⁴²Bog pa se je odvrnil in jih je izdal, naj služijo zvezdam neba [Dobesedno: vojski nebeški.], kakor je pisano v knjigi prorokov: „Ali ste mi darovali klalne in žgalne daritve štirideset let v puščavi, hiša Izraelova?

⁴³Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.

⁴³temuč nosili ste šator Molohov in boga Remfana zvezdo, podobe, ki ste jih naredili, da se jim poklanjate. Zato pa vas preselim onostran Babilona“.

⁴⁴Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.

⁴⁴Šator pričevanja so imeli očetje naši v puščavi, kakor je ukazal ta, ki je rekel Mojzesu, naj ga naredi po podobi, ki jo je videl.

⁴⁵Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;

⁴⁵Ta šator so tudi prejeli očetje naši in so ga sem prinesli z Jozuetom, ko so posedli deželo poganov, ki jih je izgnal Bog izpred obličja očetov naših, do dni Davidovih;

⁴⁶Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.

⁴⁶ki je našel milost pred Bogom in je prosil, da bi našel prebivališče Bogu Jakobovemu.

⁴⁷But Solomon built him an house.

⁴⁷A Salomon mu je sezidal hišo.

⁴⁸Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,

⁴⁸Ali Najvišji ne prebiva v svetiščih, z rokami narejenih, kakor pravi prorok:

⁴⁹Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?

⁴⁹„Nebo mi je stol, a zemlja podnožje nogam mojim. Kakšno hišo mi sezidate? pravi Gospod; ali katero naj bo mesto počivanju mojemu?

⁵⁰Hath not my hand made all these things?

⁵⁰Ni li roka moja vsega tega naredila?“

⁵¹Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.

⁵¹Trdovratni in neobrezanih src in ušes! Vi se vedno upirate Duhu svetemu, kakor očetje vaši, tako vi.

⁵²Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:

⁵²Katerega od prorokov niso preganjali očetje vaši? In pomorili so te, ki so naprej oznanjali prihod Pravičnika, čigar izdajalci in ubijalci ste sedaj postali vi,

⁵³Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.

⁵³ki ste prejeli postavo po uredbi angelov, in je niste ohranili.

⁵⁴When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.

⁵⁴Ko so pa to slišali, jih je zbodlo v srce, in škripali so z zobmi zoper njega.

⁵⁵But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

⁵⁵On pa, poln svetega Duha, se ozre na nebo in ugleda slavo Božjo in Jezusa, stoječega na desnici Božji,

⁵⁶And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

⁵⁶in reče: Glej nebesa vidim odprta in Sina človekovega, stoječega na desnici Božji.

⁵⁷Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,

⁵⁷In zakriče z močnim glasom in si zamaše ušesa pa planejo ene misli nanj,

⁵⁸And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul.

⁵⁸in ga ženo ven iz mesta in lučajo kamenje vanj. In priče položé oblačila svoja pred noge mladeniču, ki mu je bilo ime Savel.

⁵⁹And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

⁵⁹In pobijajo s kamenjem Štefana, ki kliče h Gospodu in reče: Gospod Jezus, sprejmi Duha mojega!In poklekne in zavpije z močnim glasom: Gospod, ne štej jim tega greha! In rekši to, je zaspal.

⁶⁰And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
