¹And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.

¹In zgodi se, ko neha Jezus naročati dvanajsterim učencem svojim, odide odtod, da uči in propoveduje v njih mestih.

²Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,

²Janez pa v ječi zasliši Kristusova dela in pošlje dva svojih učencev

³And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?

³ter mu sporoči: Si li ti tisti, ki ima priti, ali naj čakamo drugega?

⁴Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:

⁴In Jezus odgovori in jima veli: Pojdita in sporočita Janezu, kar slišita in vidita:

⁵The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

⁵Slepci izpregledujejo in hromi hodijo, gobavci se očiščajo in gluhi slišijo, mrtvi vstajajo in ubogim se oznanja evangelij.

⁶And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

⁶In blagor mu, kdor se nad menoj ne pohujša.

⁷And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

⁷In ko odideta, začne Jezus govoriti množici o Janezu: Kaj ste šli v puščavo gledat? Trst, ki ga veter maje?

⁸But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.

⁸Ali kaj ste šli, da vidite? Človeka, oblečenega v mehka oblačila? Glejte, kateri nosijo mehka oblačila, so po kraljevih dvorih.

⁹But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.

⁹Ali zakaj ste šli tja? Da vidite proroka? Da, pravim vam, in več nego proroka.

¹⁰For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

¹⁰Ta je, o katerem je pisano: „Glej, jaz pošiljam angela svojega pred obličjem tvojim, ki pripravi tvojo pot pred teboj“.

¹¹Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

¹¹Resnično vam pravim: Ni vstal izmed tistih, ki so rojeni od žen, večji od Janeza Krstnika; kdor je pa najmanjši v nebeškem kraljestvu, je večji od njega.

¹²And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.

¹²Od dni Janeza Krstnika pa doslej silo trpi nebeško kraljestvo, in siloviteži si ga siloma laste.

¹³For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.

¹³Kajti vsi proroki in zakon so prorokovali do Janeza.

¹⁴And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.

¹⁴In če hočete sprejeti to: on je Elija, ki ima priti.

¹⁵He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

¹⁵Kdor ima ušesa, da sliši, naj sliši!

¹⁶But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,

¹⁶Komu naj pa primerjam ta rod? Podoben je otrokom, ki posedajo po trgu in kličejo tovarišem svojim

¹⁷And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.

¹⁷in pravijo: Piskali smo vam, in niste plesali; žalostinke smo peli, in niste jokali.

¹⁸For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.

¹⁸Kajti prišel je Janez, in ne jé in ne pije, pa pravijo: Hudiča ima!

¹⁹The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

¹⁹Prišel je Sin človekov in jé in in pije, pa pravijo: Glejte človeka požeruha in pijanca, mitarjev in grešnikov prijatelja! A modrost božjo so opravičili njeni otroci.

²⁰Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:

²⁰Tedaj začne oponašati mestom, v katerih se je zgodilo največ njegovih čudežev, ker se niso izpokorila.

²¹Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

²¹Gorje ti, Korazin! gorje ti, Betsaida! zakaj ko bi se bili v Tiru in Sidonu zgodili čudeži, ki so se zgodili v vaju, bi se bila davno v raševniku in pepelu izpokorila.

²²But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.

²²Ali pravim vam, Tiru in Sidonu bo v dan sodbe laže nego vama.

²³And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

²³In ti, Kafarnavm, nisi li bil povzdignjen do neba? V pekel [Grški: hades, istega pomena kakor šeol.] boš pahnjen; zakaj ko bi se bili v Sodomi zgodili čudeži, ki so se zgodili v tebi, bi stala še današnjega dne.

²⁴But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

²⁴Ali pravim vam, da bode Sodomski zemlji v dan sodbe laže nego tebi.

²⁵At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.

²⁵V ta čas odgovori Jezus in reče: Hvalim te, Oče, Gospodar neba in zemlje, da si to prikril modrim in razumnim in si to razodel nedoraslim;

²⁶Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.

²⁶da, Oče, ker tako je bila volja tvoja.

²⁷All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

²⁷Vse mi je izročil Oče moj: in nihče ne pozna Sina nego samo Oče, tudi Očeta ne pozna nihče nego le Sin in komurkoli če Sin razodeti.

²⁸Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

²⁸Pridite k meni vsi, ki se trudite in ste obremenjeni, in jaz vas upokojim.

²⁹Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

²⁹Vzemite jarem moj nase in učite se od mene, ker sem krotek in iz srca ponižen: in najdete pokoj dušam svojim.Kajti jarem moj je sladek in breme moje je lahko.

³⁰For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
