¹Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes, and earth upon them.

²And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers.

²In seme Izraelovo se je ločilo od vseh otrok tujcev, in ustopili so se in pripoznavali grehe svoje in očetov svojih kriva dejanja.

³And they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of the LORD their God one fourth part of the day; and another fourth part they confessed, and worshipped the LORD their God.

³In stali so na mesto svojem in so brali v knjigi postave GOSPODA, svojega Boga, četrti del dne. In drugi četrti del dne so pripoznavali in se poklanjali GOSPODU, svojemu Bogu.

⁴Then stood up upon the stairs, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani, and cried with a loud voice unto the LORD their God.

⁴Nato stopijo na stopnice levitov Jesua, Bani, Kadmiel, Sebanija, Buni, Serebija, Bani in Kenani, in so vpili z velikim glasom h GOSPODU, svojemu Bogu.

⁵Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless the LORD your God for ever and ever: and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.

⁵In leviti: Jesua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hasabneja, Serebija, Hodija, Sebanija in Petahija so dejali: Vstanite in hvalite GOSPODA, svojega Boga, od vekomaj do vekomaj! In hvaljeno bodi ime slave tvoje, ki je vzvišeno nad vsako hvalo in proslavo.

⁶Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.

⁶Ti si GOSPOD, ti edini! Ti si naredil nebo, nebesa nebes in vso njih vojsko, zemljo in vse, kar je na njej, morja in karkoli je v njih, in ti jim vsem vzdržuješ obstanek; in vojske nebeške te molijo.

⁷Thou art the LORD the God, who didst choose Abram, and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gavest him the name of Abraham;

⁷Ti si Jehova, Bog, ki si izvolil Abrama ter ga pripeljal iz Ura Kaldejcev, in dal si mu ima Abraham.

⁸And foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give it, I say, to his seed, and hast performed thy words; for thou art righteous:

⁸In našel si srce njegovo zvesto pred seboj ter sklenil ž njim zavezo, da mu daš deželo Kanaancev, Hetejcev, Amorejcev, Ferizejcev, Jebusejcev in Girgasejcev, da jo daš semenu njegovemu, in si vzdržal besede svoje, zakaj ti si pravičen.

⁹And didst see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heardest their cry by the Red sea;

⁹Ti si videl nadlogo očetov naših v Egiptu in slišal njih vpitje ob Rdečem morju;

¹⁰And shewedst signs and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudly against them. So didst thou get thee a name, as it is this day.

¹⁰in storil si znamenja in čudeže nad Faraonom in nad vsemi hlapci njegovimi in nad vsem ljudstvom dežele njegove, zakaj vedel si, da so prevzetno ravnali proti njim; in si sebi storil ime, kakor je današnji dan.

¹¹And thou didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps, as a stone into the mighty waters.

¹¹Razklal si morje pred njimi, da so šli sredi morja po suhem; njih preganjalce pa si vrgel v globočine, kakor kamen v silne vode.

¹²Moreover thou leddest them in the day by a cloudy pillar; and in the night by a pillar of fire, to give them light in the way wherein they should go.

¹²In vodil si jih v oblakovem stebru po dne in v ognjenem stebru po noči, da bi jim svetil na poti, ki so po njej šli.

¹³Thou camest down also upon mount Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments:

¹³In prišel si doli na goro Sinaj in govoril si ž njimi iz nebes ter jim dal pravične sodbe in zakone resnične ter dobre postave in zapovedi;

¹⁴And madest known unto them thy holy sabbath, and commandedst them precepts, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses thy servant:

¹⁴in znano si jim storil sveto soboto svojo in jim zapovedal zapovedi in postave in zakon po Mojzesu, hlapcu svojem.

¹⁵And gavest them bread from heaven for their hunger, and broughtest forth water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and promisedst them that they should go in to possess the land which thou hadst sworn to give them.

¹⁶But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks, and hearkened not to thy commandments,

¹⁶Ali oni, očetje naši, so ravnali prevzetno in postali so trdovratni in niso poslušali zapovedi tvojih

¹⁷And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not.

¹⁷in so se branili poslušati in se niso spominjali čudovitih del tvojih, ki si jih storil med njimi, temuč v trdovratnosti svoji in v uporu svojem so si postavili glavarja, da bi se vrnili v sužnost svojo. Ali ti si Bog mnogega odpuščanja, milostiv in poln usmiljenja, počasen v jezi in obilen v milosti, ti jih nisi zapustil.

¹⁸Yea, when they had made them a molten calf, and said, This is thy God that brought thee up out of Egypt, and had wrought great provocations;

¹⁸Ko so si celo naredili ulito tele in rekli: To je tvoj Bog, ki te je izpeljal iz Egipta, in so počenjali grozno zasmehovanje Boga,

¹⁹Yet thou in thy manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderness: the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to shew them light, and the way wherein they should go.

¹⁹ti jih vendar nisi zapustil v mnogoterem usmiljenju svojem v puščavi: oblakov steber se ni umaknil iznad njih po dne, da bi jih vodil po poti, ne ognjeni steber po noči, da bi jim svetil na pot, po kateri naj gredo.

²⁰Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst.

²⁰Ti si tudi dal dobrega duha svojega, da jih poučuje, in njih ustom nisi odrekel mane svoje, in dajal si jim vode, ko so bili žejni.

²¹Yea, forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing; their clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not.

²¹Štirideset let si jih oskrboval v puščavi, da jim ničesar ni pomanjkovalo; njih obleka se ni razdrapala in njih noge niso otekle.

²²Moreover thou gavest them kingdoms and nations, and didst divide them into corners: so they possessed the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.

²²In dal si jim kraljestva in ljudstva in ta jim pridelil po posameznih pokrajinah; tako so posedli deželo Sihona, kralja hesbonskega, in deželo Oga, kralja v Basanu.

²³Their children also multipliedst thou as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them into the land, concerning which thou hadst promised to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it.

²³In njih otroke si pomnožil kakor zvezde na nebu in si jih pripeljal v deželo, za katero si bil govoril njih očetom, da pridejo vanjo in jo posedejo;

²⁴So the children went in and possessed the land, and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gavest them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them as they would.

²⁴njih otroci so torej prišli vanjo in jo posedli, in ti si ponižal pred njimi prebivalce te dežele, Kanaance, in si jih dal njim v roke ž njih kralji in z ljudstvi vred v deželi, da so ž njimi storili po volji svoji.

²⁵And they took strong cities, and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all goods, wells digged, vineyards, and oliveyards, and fruit trees in abundance: so they did eat, and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in thy great goodness.

²⁵In zavzeli so utrjena mesta in mastno zemljo in dobili v last hiše, polne vsakršnega blaga, vodnjake izkopane, vinograde, oljkove vrte in sadnih dreves obilo: in jedli so in se nasitili in odebeleli, dobro živeč po veliki dobroti tvoji.

²⁶Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets which testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations.

²⁶Ali postali so nepokorni in se uprli zoper tebe in so vrgli zakon tvoj za hrbet svoj in pomorili proroke tvoje, ki so pričevali zoper nje, da bi jih zopet preobrnili k tebi, in so počenjali grozno zasmehovanje Boga.

²⁷Therefore thou deliveredst them into the hand of their enemies, who vexed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies.

²⁷Zato si jih dal v roke njih zatiralcem, ki so jih tlačili; ali ko so ob času nadloge vpili k tebi, ti si jih uslišal iz nebes in po svojem mnogoterem usmiljenju si jim dal rešitelje, ki so jih oteli iz roke njih zatiralcev.

²⁸But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the land of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and many times didst thou deliver them according to thy mercies;

²⁸A komaj so imeli pokoj, so zopet delali hudo pred teboj. Zato si jih prepustil pesti njih sovražnikov, da so jim gospodovali; pa zopet so vpili k tebi, in slišal si jih iz nebes in mnogokrat si jih otel po mnogem usmiljenju svojem.

²⁹And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto thy commandments, but sinned against thy judgments, (which if a man do, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear.

²⁹In pričeval si zoper nje, da bi jih izpreobrnil k postavi svoji, oni pa so se vedli prevzetno in niso poslušali zapovedi tvojih, ampak so grešili zoper pravice tvoje (katere kdor izpolnjuje, bo živel po njih) in pleča svoja umeknili izpod jarma tvojega; vdali so se trdovratnosti in niso hoteli poslušati.

³⁰Yet many years didst thou forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands.

³⁰A veliko let si imel potrpljenje ž njimi in po duhu svojem si pričeval zoper nje, po svojih prorokih, a niso poslušali; zato si jih dal v roke ljudstvom dežel.

³¹Nevertheless for thy great mercies' sake thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them; for thou art a gracious and merciful God.

³¹Vendar pa v mnogoterem usmiljenju svojem jih nisi docela pokončal, ne jih zapustil, zakaj ti, Bog mogočni, si milostiv in poln usmiljenja.

³²Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day.

³²In sedaj, o Bog naš, Bog mogočni, veliki, silni in grozni, ki hraniš zavezo in milost, naj se ti ne vidi majhna vsa tista težava, ki je zadela nas in kralje naše in kneze in duhovnike in proroke in očete naše in vse ljudstvo tvoje, od dni kraljev asirskih do tega dne.

³³Howbeit thou art just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly:

³³Ali ti si pravičen v vsem, kar je prišlo nad nas: zakaj ti si ravnal po resnici, mi pa smo delali krivično.

³⁴Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testify against them.

³⁴In naši kralji, knezi, duhovniki in očetje niso delali po postavi tvoji in niso pazili na zapovedi tvoje in pričevanja, s katerimi si pričeval zoper nje.

³⁵For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, neither turned they from their wicked works.

³⁵Kajti niso ti služili v kraljestvu svojem in ob veliki dobroti tvoji, ki si jo jim podeljeval, in v tej postrani in mastni deželi, ki si jo jim bil izročil, in se niso preobrnili od hudih dejanj svojih.

³⁶Behold, we are servants this day, and for the land that thou gavest unto our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof, behold, we are servants in it:

³⁶Glej, hlapci smo danes, in dežela, ki si jo dal očetom našim, da uživajo njene sadove in dobrote – glej, v tej smo hlapci!

³⁷And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.

³⁷In ona dohodke svoje množi kraljem, ki si jih nam postavil zavoljo grehov naših, in ti gospodujejo telesom našim in živini naši, kakor jim je drago, in v veliki smo nadlogi.A pri vsem tem narejamo in pišemo trdno zavezo, in vojvode naši, leviti in duhovniki naši, jo s pečati potrjujejo.

³⁸And because of all this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, Levites, and priests, seal unto it.
