¹And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side Jordan by Jericho.

¹In sinovi Izraelovi odrinejo in se utabore na poljanah Moabskih, vzhodno od Jordana, Jerihu nasproti.

²And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.

²In Balak, sin Ziporjev, je videl vse, kar je storil Izrael Amorejcem.

³And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel.

³In zbali so se Moabci silno ljudstva izraelskega, ker ga je bilo veliko, in groza je zgrabila Moaba pred sinovi Izraelovimi.

⁴And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now shall this company lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time.

⁴In reče Moab starejšinam madianskim: Zdaj pa požre ta množica vse okrog nas, kakor pomuli vol vso travo na polju. Balak pa, sin Ziporjev, je bil kralj moabski v tem času.

⁵He sent messengers therefore unto Balaam the son of Beor to Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me:

⁵Ta pošlje poročnike k Balaamu, sinu Beorjevemu, v Petor, ki je pri veletoku, v deželo sinov ljudstva njegovega, da ga pokličejo, govoreč: Glej, iz Egipta je prišlo ljudstvo; glej, pokrilo je površje zemlje in ustanovilo se je tu meni nasproti.

⁶Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land: for I wot that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.

⁶Pridi torej zdaj, prosim, in mi prekolni to ljudstvo, ker je močnejše od mene: morda se mi ga posreči poraziti ter izgnati iz dežele; zakaj vem, da je blagoslovljen, kogar ti blagosloviš, in preklet, kogar prekolneš.

⁷And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak.

⁷Gredo torej starejšine Moabcev in Madiancev s plačilom za vedeževanje v rokah svojih; in ko pridejo k Balaamu, mu sporoče besede Balakove.

⁸And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as the LORD shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.

⁸In jim reče: Prenočite nocoj tu, in odgovorim vam, kakor mi bo govoril GOSPOD. In ostanejo knezi moabski pri Balaamu.

⁹And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee?

⁹Pride pa Bog k Balaamu in reče: Kdo so tisti možje pri tebi?

¹⁰And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying,

¹⁰In Balaam reče Bogu: Balak, sin Ziporjev, kralj Moabov, je poslal k meni:

¹¹Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out.

¹¹Glej, ljudstvo, ki je prišlo iz Egipta, je pokrilo površje zemlje! Pridi torej in mi ga prekolni; morda se mi posreči, da jih premorem v boju ter izženem.

¹²And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed.

¹²Bog pa veli Balaamu: Ne hodi ž njimi; ne kolni ljudstva, zakaj blagoslovljeno je.

¹³And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land: for the LORD refuseth to give me leave to go with you.

¹³In vstane Balaam zjutraj in reče knezom Balakovim: Pojdite v deželo svojo; zakaj GOSPOD mi noče dopustiti, da bi šel z vami.

¹⁴And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Balaam refuseth to come with us.

¹⁴Nato vstanejo knezi moabski in gredo k Balaku in sporoče: Balaam se je branil iti z nami.

¹⁵And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honorable than they.

¹⁵Tedaj pošlje Balak še enkrat kneze, pa več in imenitnejših nego prej.

¹⁶And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me:

¹⁶Ti pridejo k Balaamu in mu reko: Tako pravi Balak, sin Ziporjev: Ne daj si, prosim, z ničemer zabraniti, da ne bi prišel k meni.

¹⁷For I will promote thee unto very great honor, and I will do whatsoever thou sayest unto me: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people.

¹⁷Zakaj z mnogimi častmi te hočem obsipati, in karkoli mi porečeš, rad storim; pridi torej, prosim, prekolni mi to ljudstvo.

¹⁸And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more.

¹⁸Balaam pa odvrne in reče služabnikom Balakovim: Če mi da Balak polno hišo svojo srebra in zlata, vendar ne bom mogel prestopiti povelja GOSPODA, Boga svojega, da bi storil kaj manj ali več.

¹⁹Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the LORD will say unto me more.

¹⁹Pa ostanite tudi vi, prosim, nocoj tu, da zvem, kaj mi bo dalje govoril GOSPOD.

²⁰And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up, and go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do.

²⁰In pride Bog po noči k Balaamu in reče: Ako so te prišli ti možje klicat, vstani in pojdi ž njimi; ali stóri samo to, kar ti bom govoril.

²¹And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.

²¹Nato vstane Balaam zjutraj, osedla oslico svojo ter odide s knezovi moabskimi.

²²And God's anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the LORD stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.

²²A vname se srd Božji, da je šel. In angel GOSPODOV mu stopi na pot kot nasprotnik. On pa je jezdil na oslici svoji in dva hlapca njegova sta bila pri njem.

²³And the ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.

²³In oslica ugleda angela GOSPODOVEGA na poti stoječega, s potegnjenim mečem v roki; in ugane se oslica s pota ter gre po polju, Balaam po jo bije, da bi šla po poti.

²⁴But the angel of the LORD stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.

²⁴In postavi se angel GOSPODOV na ulico med vinogradi, kjer je bil zid na tej in zid na oni strani.

²⁵And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall: and he smote her again.

²⁵Ko ugleda oslica angela GOSPODOVEGA, se primakne k zidu in pritisne Balaamu nogo k zidu, in ta jo zopet tepe.

²⁶And the angel of the LORD went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.

²⁷And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she fell down under Balaam: and Balaam's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff.

²⁷Oslica pa, videč angela GOSPODOVEGA, pade pod Balaamom, in Balaam se razvname od jeze in jo tepe s palico.

²⁸And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?

²⁸Tedaj odpre GOSPOD usta oslici, da izpregovori Balaamu: Kaj sem ti storila, da me že v tretjič tepeš?

²⁹And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.

²⁹Nato reče Balaam oslici: Ker se norčuješ z menoj! O da bi imel meč v roki, kar ubil bi te!

³⁰And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? And he said, Nay.

³⁰In oslica reče Balaamu: Nisem li tvoja oslica, na kateri si od nekdaj jezdil do tega dne? ali sem ti kdaj storila tako? On reče: nikoli.

³¹Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.

³¹Tedaj odpre GOSPOD Balaamu oči, da vidi angela GOSPODOVEGA na poti stoječega, s potegnjenim mečem v roki, in povesi teme ter pade na obraz svoj.

³²And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me:

³²In angel GOSPODOV mu veli: Zakaj si tepel oslico svojo zdaj že trikrat? Glej, izšel sem, da ti bodem nasprotnik, ker tvoja pot drži v pogubo pred menoj.

³³And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.

³³In oslica me je videla in se mi že trikrat izognila; sicer bi te bil, ko bi se mi ne bila umeknila, takoj umoril, njo pa ohranil živo.

³⁴And Balaam said unto the angel of the LORD, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again.

³⁴In Balaam reče angelu GOSPODOVEMU: Grešil sem, zakaj nisem vedel, da ti stojiš na poti proti meni; in sedaj, če si ti vidi hudobno, se vrnem.

³⁵And the angel of the LORD said unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

³⁵Angel GOSPODOV pa mu veli: Pojdi s temi možmi, ali govóri samo tisto besedo, ki ti jo naročim. Šel je torej Balaam z Balakovimi knezi.

³⁶And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto a city of Moab, which is in the border of Arnon, which is in the utmost coast.

³⁶In ko zasliši Balak, da prihaja Balaam, mu pride naproti v mesto moabsko, ki je na meji Arnona, prav na skrajni meji.

³⁷And Balak said unto Balaam, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honor?

³⁷In reče Balak Balaamu: Nisem li nujno poslal k tebi, da te pokličem? Zakaj nisi prišel k meni? ker bi te menda ne mogel dosti počastiti?

³⁸And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to say any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.

³⁸Balaam pa odgovori Balaku: Glej, zdaj pa sem prišel k tebi; toda morem li sploh govoriti kaj? Besedo, katero Bog dene v usta moja, to moram govoriti.

³⁹And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kirjathhuzoth.

³⁹In gre Balaam z Balakom in prideta v Kirjat-huzot.

⁴⁰And Balak offered oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.

⁴⁰Balak pa zakolje v daritve govedi in drobnice ter pošlje od tega Balaamu in knezom, ki so bili ž njim.In zjutraj vzame Balak Balaama ter ga pelje na višave Baalove, in odondod je videl zadnji del ljudstva izraelskega.

⁴¹And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal, that thence he might see the utmost part of the people.
