¹Hear this, all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world:

²Both low and high, rich and poor, together.

²nizki in visoki, bogatini in ubožci vsi skupaj!

³My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.

³Usta moja bodo govorila modrost in srca mojega premišljevanje bo razumnost.

⁴I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.

⁴Uho svoje nagnem h govoru v prilikah, na strune igraje, bom razodeval uganko svojo.

⁵Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?

⁵Kaj bi se bal v dnevih nesreče, kadar me obdaja krivičnost tistih, ki mi so za petami,

⁶They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;

⁶njih, ki zaupajo v premoženje svoje in se ponašajo v obilosti bogastva svojega?

⁷None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:

⁷Brata nikakor ne more odkupiti nihče, ne more dati Bogu zanj spravnega denarja

⁸(For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)

⁸(predrag namreč je njih duše odkup, zato ga ne zmore vekomaj),

⁹That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.

⁹da bi živel za večno, ne moral videti jame.

¹⁰For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.

¹⁰Saj vidi bogatin: mrjó modri, enako ginevajo nespametni in neumni in drugim puščajo bogastvo svoje.

¹¹Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.

¹¹Menijo, da njih hiše bodo trajale za veke, njih prebivališča za vse rodove; zato imenujejo dežele s svojimi imeni.

¹²Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.

¹²In vendar človek v veličju nima obstanka, podoben je živalim, ki poginejo.

¹³This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.

¹³To je usoda njih, ki tako v sebe zaupajo; vendar njih nasledniki odobravajo njih govorjenje. (Sela.)

¹⁴Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.

¹⁴Kakor ovce bodo razpostavljeni v šeolu, smrt jim bo pastir; in pravični jim bodo gospodovali tisto jutro, in njih obliko [Ali: lepoto.] pokonča šeol, da ji ne bo več bivališča.

¹⁵But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.

¹⁵Ali dušo mojo reši Bog iz oblasti šeola, ker me vzame k sebi. (Sela.)

¹⁶Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;

¹⁶Ne boj se, ko kdo zabogati, ko se pomnoži slava hiše njegove.

¹⁷For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.

¹⁷Ker ob smrti ne vzame nič tega s seboj, za njim ne pojde slava njegova.

¹⁸Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself.

¹⁸Čeprav blagruje dušo svojo v življenju svojem – i tebe hvalijo, ko si privoščiš –,

¹⁹He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light.

¹⁹vendar pride k rodu očetov svojih, ki vekomaj ne bodo uživali luči.Človek, ki je v veličju, a ni razumen, je podoben živini, ki pogine.

²⁰Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.
