¹This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.

¹คำนี้เป็นคำจริง คือว่าถ้าชายคนใดปรารถนาหน้าที่เจ้าอธิการ คนนั้นก็ปรารถนากิจการงานที่ประเสริฐ

²A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

²เจ้าอธิการนั้นจึงต้องเป็นคนที่ไม่มีใครติได้ เป็นสามีของหญิงคนเดียว เป็นคนรอบคอบ เป็นคนรู้จักประมาณตน เป็นคนมีความประพฤติดี มีอัชฌาสัยรับแขกดี เหมาะที่จะเป็นครู

³Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;

³ไม่ดื่มเหล้าองุ่น ไม่เป็นนักเลง ไม่เป็นคนโลภมักได้ แต่เป็นคนสุภาพ ไม่เป็นคนชอบวิวาท ไม่เป็นคนเห็นแก่เงิน

⁴One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;

⁴ต้องเป็นคนครอบครองบ้านเรือนของตนได้ดี บังคับบัญชาบุตรทั้งหลายของตนด้วยความสง่าผ่าเผยทุกอย่าง

⁵(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

⁵(เพราะว่าถ้าชายคนใดไม่รู้จักครอบครองบ้านเรือนของตน คนนั้นจะดูแลคริสตจักรของพระเจ้าอย่างไรได้)

⁶Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

⁶อย่าให้ผู้ที่กลับใจใหม่ๆเป็นเจ้าอธิการ เกรงว่าเขาอาจจะเย่อหยิ่ง และก็จะถูกปรับโทษเหมือนอย่างพญามาร

⁷Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

⁷นอกนั้นเขาจะต้องมีชื่อเสียงดีในคนภายนอก เกรงว่าเขาจะเป็นที่ติเตียน และจะติดบ่วงแร้วของพญามาร

⁸Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

⁸ฝ่ายผู้ช่วยนั้นก็เช่นเดียวกัน คือต้องเป็นคนสง่าผ่าเผย ไม่เป็นคนสองลิ้น ไม่ดื่มเหล้าองุ่นมาก ไม่เป็นคนโลภมักได้

⁹Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

⁹และเป็นคนยึดมั่นในข้อลึกลับแห่งความเชื่อด้วยจิตสำนึกผิดและชอบอันบริสุทธิ์

¹⁰And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.

¹⁰จงลองดูคนเหล่านี้เสียก่อนด้วย และเมื่อเห็นว่าไม่มีข้อตำหนิแล้ว จึงตั้งเขาไว้ในตำแหน่งผู้ช่วย

¹¹Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.

¹¹ฝ่ายพวกภรรยาของเขาก็เหมือนกัน ต้องเป็นคนสง่าผ่าเผย ไม่ใส่ร้ายผู้อื่น เป็นคนรู้จักประมาณตน และเป็นคนสัตย์ซื่อในสิ่งทั้งปวง

¹²Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

¹²จงให้ผู้ช่วยนั้นเป็นสามีของหญิงคนเดียว และบังคับบัญชาบุตรของตน และปกครองบ้านเรือนของตนได้ดี

¹³For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

¹³เพราะว่าคนที่กระทำการในหน้าที่ผู้ช่วยได้ดี ก็ได้ตำแหน่งอันมีหน้ามีตา และมีใจกล้าเป็นอันมากในความเชื่อซึ่งมีในพระเยซูคริสต์

¹⁴These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:

¹⁴ข้อความเหล่านี้ข้าพเจ้าเขียนฝากมายังท่าน หวังใจว่าไม่ช้าไม่นานข้าพเจ้าจะมาหาท่าน

¹⁵But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

¹⁵แต่หากว่าข้าพเจ้ามาช้า ท่านก็จะได้รู้ว่าควรประพฤติอย่างไรในครอบครัวของพระเจ้า คือคริสตจักรของพระเจ้าผู้ดำรงพระชนม์ เป็นหลักและรากแห่งความจริง

¹⁶And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

¹⁶ทางของพระเจ้าอันยิ่งใหญ่และลึกลับซึ่งไม่มีใครปฏิเสธได้ก็คือ พระเจ้าทรงปรากฏในเนื้อหนัง พระวิญญาณได้ทรงพิสูจน์แล้ว หมู่ทูตสวรรค์ก็เห็น และมีผู้ประกาศพระองค์แก่ชนต่างชาติ มีชาวโลกเชื่อถือพระองค์ และพระองค์ทรงถูกรับขึ้นไปในสง่าราศี
