¹Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.

¹Vả, dân Phi-li-tin tranh chiến với Y-sơ-ra-ên. Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên chạy trốn khỏi trước mặt dân Phi-li-tin, có nhiều người bị thương chết trên núi Ghinh-bô-a.

²And the Philistines followed hard after Saul, and after his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul.

²Dân Phi-li-tin đuổi theo kịp Sau-lơ và các con trai người, đánh giết các con trai ấy, là Giô-na-than, A-bi-na-đáp, và Manh-ki-sua.

³And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him, and he was wounded of the archers.

³Cơn giặc rất kịch liệt, làm cho Sau-lơ thiệt cực khổ; khi lính cầm cung kịp đến người bèn bắn người bị thương.

⁴Then said Saul to his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. So Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.

⁴Sau-lơ bảo kẻ vác binh khí hầu mình rằng: Ngươi hãy tuốt gươm của ngươi và đâm giết ta, kẻo kẻ chẳng chịu cắt bì kia đến sản nghiệp ta. Song kẻ vác binh khí người không khứng vâng mạng, vì lấy làm sợ hãi. Sau-lơ bèn cầm lấy gươm mình cúi thúc vào ngực.

⁵And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise on the sword, and died.

⁵Khi kẻ vác binh khí thấy Sau-lơ chết rồi, thì cũng lấy gươm cúi thúc vào ngực mình luôn.

⁶So Saul died, and his three sons, and all his house died together.

⁶Vậy, Sau-lơ, ba con trai người, và cả nhà người đều đồng nhau chết.

⁷And when all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, then they forsook their cities, and fled: and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

⁷Khi dân Y-sơ-ra-ên ở trong đồng bằng thấy đạo binh chạy trốn, Sau-lơ cùng các con trai người đã chết rồi, thì bỏ thành mình mà trốn đi; dân Phi-li-tin đến ở trong các thành ấy.

⁸And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his sons fallen in mount Gilboa.

⁸Ngày hôm sau, dân Phi-li-tin đến bóc lột những kẻ tử trận, thấy Sau-lơ và các con trai người ngã chết trên núi Ghinh-bô-a.

⁹And when they had stripped him, they took his head, and his armor, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to carry tidings unto their idols, and to the people.

⁹Chúng bóc lột thây Sau-lơ, chém đầu người, cất lấy binh khí người, rồi sai kẻ đi khắp xứ Phi-li-tin, để báo tin cho các thần tượng và dân sự.

¹⁰And they put his armor in the house of their gods, and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon.

¹⁰Chúng để binh khí của người tại trong miễu các thần của chúng nó, còn đầu người thì đóng đinh treo trong chùa Ða-gôn.

¹¹And when all Jabeshgilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,

¹¹Khi dân cư Gia-be ở Ga-la-át nghe những điều dân Phi-li-tin đã làm cho Sau-lơ,

¹²They arose, all the valiant men, and took away the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

¹²thì những người mạnh dạn đều cảm động đi lên cướp lấy xác vua Sau-lơ và xác các con trai người, đem về Gia-be, chôn hài cốt của họ dưới cây thông tại Gia-be, đoạn kiêng ăn bảy ngày.

¹³So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it;

¹³Ấy vậy, vua Sau-lơ chết, vì tội lỗi mình đã phạm cùng Ðức Giê-hô-va, và vì chẳng có vâng theo mạng lịnh của Ngài; lại vì đã cầu hỏi bà bóng,

¹⁴And inquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.

¹⁴chẳng có cầu hỏi Ðức Giê-hô-va; vậy, vì cớ ấy Ngài giết người, dời nước người cho về Ða-vít, con trai Y-sai.
