¹And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.

¹Sa-tan dấy lên muốn làm hại cho Y-sơ-ra-ên, bèn giục Ða-vít lấy số Y-sơ-ra-ên.

²And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.

²Ða-vít nói với Giô-áp và các quan trưởng của dân sự rằng: Hãy đi lấy số dân sự, từ Bê -e-Sê-ba cho đến Ðan; rồi đem về tâu lại cho ta, để ta biết số họ.

³And Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord's servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?

³Giô-áp thưa; Nguyện Ðức Giê-hô-va gia thêm dân sự Ngài nhiều gấp trăm lần đã có! Ôi vua chúa tôi! hết thảy chúng nó há chẳng phải là tôi tớ của chúa tôi sao? Cớ sao chúa tôi dạy bảo làm điều đó? Nhơn sao chúa tôi muốn gây tội lỗi cho Y-sơ-ra-ên?

⁴Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.

⁴Nhưng lời của vua thắng hơn lời của Giô-áp. Vì vậy, Giô-áp ra, đi khắp Y-sơ-ra-ên, rồi trở về Giê-ru-sa-lem.

⁵And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.

⁵Giô-áp đem tâu cho vua tổng số dân; trong cả Y-sơ-ra-ên được một trăm mười vạn người cầm gươm; trong cả Giu-đa được bốn mươi bảy vạn người cầm gươm.

⁶But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them: for the king's word was abominable to Joab.

⁶Nhưng Giô-áp có cai số người Lê-vi và người Bên-gia-min; vì lời của vua lấy làm gớm ghiếc cho người.

⁷And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel.

⁷Ðiều đó chẳng đẹp lòng Ðức Chúa Trời; nên Ngài hành hại Y-sơ-ra-ên.

⁸And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

⁸Ða-vít thưa với Ðức Chúa Trời rằng: Tôi làm điều đó, thật là phạm tội lớn; nhưng bây giờ, xin Chúa hãy bỏ qua tội ác của kẻ tôi tớ Chúa đi; vì tôi có làm cách ngu dại.

⁹And the LORD spake unto Gad, David's seer, saying,

⁹Ðức Giê-hô-va phán với Gát, là đấng tiên kiến của Ða-vít rằng:

¹⁰Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

¹⁰Hãy đi nói cùng Ða-vít: Ðức Giê-hô-va có phán như vầy: Ta định cho ngươi ba tai vạ; hãy chọn lấy một để ta giáng nó trên ngươi.

¹¹So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee

¹¹Gát bèn đến cùng Ða-vít, thưa với người rằng: Ðức Giê-hô-va phán như vầy: Hãy chọn mặc ý ngươi,

¹²Either three years' famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.

¹²hoặc ba năm đói kém, hoặc bị thua ba tháng tại trước mặt cừu địch ngươi, và phải gươm của kẻ thù nghịch phá hại, hay là bị ba ngày gươm của Ðức Giê-hô-va, tức là ôn dịch ở trong xứ, có thiên sứ của Ðức Giê-hô-va hủy diệt trong khắp bờ cõi của Y-sơ-ra-ên. Vậy bây giờ hãy định lấy điều nào tôi phải tâu lại cùng Ðấng đã sai tôi.

¹³And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.

¹³Ða-vít nói với Gát rằng: Ta bị hoạn nạn lớn. Ta xin sa vào tay Ðức Giê-hô-va, vì sự thương xót của Ngài rất lớn; chớ để ta sa vào tay của loài người ta.

¹⁴So the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.

¹⁴Ðức Giê-hô-va bèn giáng ôn dịch nơi Y-sơ-ra-ên; có bảy vạn người Y-sơ-ra-ên ngã chết.

¹⁵And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the LORD beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

¹⁵Ðức Chúa Trời sai một thiên sứ đến Giê-ru-sa-lem đặng hủy diệt nó; đương khi hủy diệt, Ðức Giê-hô-va xem thấy, Ðức Giê-hô-va xem thấy, bèn tiếc việc tai vạ nầy, và nói với thiên sứ đi hủy diệt rằng: Thôi! Bây giờ hãy rút tay ngươi lại. Bấy giờ thiên sứ của Ðức Giê-hô-va đứng gần sân đạp lúa của Oït-nan, người Giê-bu-sít.

¹⁶And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.

¹⁶Ða-vít ngước mắt lên, thấy thiên sứ của Ðức Giê-hô-va đứng giữa lừng trời, tay cầm gươm đưa ra trên Giê-ru-sa-lem. Ða-vít và các trưởng lão đương mặc bao gai, liền sấp mình xuống đất.

¹⁷And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father's house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.

¹⁷Ða-vít thưa cùng Ðức Chúa Trời rằng: Há chẳng phải tôi đã truyền lấy số dân sao? Ấy là tôi đã phạm tội và làm điều ác; còn các con chiên kia, đã làm chi? Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời tôi ôi! xin tay Chúa hãy đánh hại tôi và nhà cha tôi; nhưng chớ giáng ôn dịch trên dân sự của Chúa mà hành hại nó.

¹⁸Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

¹⁸Khi ấy, thiên sứ của Ðức Giê-hô-va bảo Gát nói với Ða-vít phải đi lên dựng một bàn thờ cho Ðức Giê-hô-va tại sân đạp lúa của Oït-nan, người Giê-bu-sít.

¹⁹And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of the LORD.

¹⁹Ða-vít đi lên theo lời của Gát đã nhân danh Ðức Giê-hô-va mà nói ra.

²⁰And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.

²⁰Oït-nan xây lại, thấy thiên sứ; bốn con trai người ở với người đều ẩn mình đi. Vả, bấy giờ Oït-nan đương đạp lúa miến.

²¹And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshingfloor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.

²¹Ða-vít đi đến Oït-nan, Oït-nan nhìn thấy Ða-vít, bèn ra khỏi sân đạp lúa, sấp mình xuống đất trước mặt Ða-vít mà lạy.

²²Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto the LORD: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.

²²Ða-vít bảo Oït-nan rằng: Hãy nhượng cho ta chỗ sân đạp lúa, để ta cất tại đó một bàn thờ cho Ðức Giê-hô-va; hãy nhượng nó cho ta thật giá bạc nó, hầu tai vạ ngừng lại trong dân sự.

²³And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.

²³Oït-nan thưa với Ða-vít rằng: Vua hãy nhận lấy nó, xin vua chúa tôi, hãy làm điều gì người lấy làm tốt. Kìa, tôi dâng bò cho vua dùng làm của lễ thiêu, cộ sân đạp lúa dùng làm củi, còn lúa miến để dùng làm của lễ chay; tôi dâng cho hết cả.

²⁴And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.

²⁴Vua Ða-vít nói cùng Oït-nan rằng: Không, thật ta muốn mua nó theo giá bạc thật nó; vì ta chẳng muốn lấy vật gì của ngươi mà dâng cho Ðức Giê-hô-va cũng không muốn dâng của lễ thiêu chẳng tốn chi cả.

²⁵So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight.

²⁵Ấy vậy, Ða-vít mua cái chỗ sân ấy trả cho Oït-nan giá bằng siếc-lơ, cân nặng sáu trăm siếc-lơ.

²⁶And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the LORD; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt offering.

²⁶Tại đó Ða-vít cất một bàn thờ cho Ðức Giê-hô-va, dâng những của lễ thiêu, của lễ bình an, và cầu khẩn Ðức Giê-hô-va; Ngài đáp lời người bằng lửa từ trời giáng xuống trên bàn thờ về của lễ thiêu.

²⁷And the LORD commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.

²⁷Ðức Giê-hô-va dạy bảo thiên sứ, thiên sứ bèn xỏ gươm mình vào vỏ.

²⁸At that time when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.

²⁸Trong lúc đó, Ða-vít thấy Ðức Giê-hô-va đã nhậm lời mình tại trong sân đạp lúa của Oït-nan, người Giê-bu-sít, thì người bèn dâng của lễ tại đó.

²⁹For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of the burnt offering, were at that season in the high place at Gibeon.

²⁹Vì cái đền tạm của Ðức Giê-hô-va mà Môi-se đã làm trong đồng vắng, và cái bàn thờ về của lễ thiêu, trong lúc đó đều ở nơi cao tại Ga-ba-ôn;

³⁰But David could not go before it to enquire of God: for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the LORD.

³⁰Ða-vít không dám đi đến trước mặt bàn thờ ấy đặng cầu vấn Ðức Chúa Trời; bởi vì người kinh hãi gươm của thiên sứ của Ðức Giê-hô-va.
