¹And David numbered the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds over them.

¹Ða-vít điểm dân sự đi theo mình, rồi đặt ở trước đầu chúng những trưởng của ngàn người, trưởng của trăm người.

²And David sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said unto the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.

²Người chia dân ra làm ba toán, khiến Giô-áp lãnh một toán, A-bi-sai, con của Xê-ru-gia, em của Giô-áp, lãnh một toán, còn Y-tai, người Gát, lãnh một toán. Ðoạn, vua nói cùng dân sự rằng: Hẳn ta cũng sẽ đi ra với các ngươi.

³But the people answered, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but now thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou succor us out of the city.

³Nhưng dân sự thưa rằng: Vua chớ đến, vì nếu chúng tôi chạy trốn, thù nghịch sẽ không lấy làm hệ trọng gì, và dẫu đến đỗi phân nửa chúng tôi có chết đi, thì chúng nó cũng không chú ý đến; còn vua, vua bằng một vạn chúng tôi. Vậy thà vua ở trong thành chực sẵn tiếp cứu chúng tôi thì hơn.

⁴And the king said unto them, What seemeth you best I will do. And the king stood by the gate side, and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands.

⁴Vua tiếp rằng: Ta sẽ làm điều chi các ngươi lấy làm phải. Vậy, người đứng tại cửa thành trong khi dân sự kéo đi từng toán trăm và ngàn.

⁵And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom.

⁵Vua truyền lịnh nầy cho Giô-áp, A-bi-sai, và Y-tai mà rằng: Hãy vì cớ ta dong cho Áp-sa-lôm trai trẻ. Cả dân đều nghe lời vua căn dặn cho các trưởng vì Áp-sa-lôm.

⁶So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the wood of Ephraim;

⁶Dân sự kéo ra đồng, đón quân Y-sơ-ra-ên, giao chiến tại trong rừng Ép-ra-im.

⁷Where the people of Israel were slain before the servants of David, and there was there a great slaughter that day of twenty thousand men.

⁷Ðạo quân Y-sơ-ra-ên bị các tôi tớ của Ða-vít đánh bại; thật ấy là một trận thua lớn, trong ngày đó chết mất hai vạn người.

⁸For the battle was there scattered over the face of all the country: and the wood devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.

⁸Chiến tranh lan khắp miền, và trong ngày đó có nhiều người chết mất trong rừng hơn là chết ở dưới luỡi gươm.

⁹And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went away.

⁹Các tôi tớ của Ða-vít gặp Áp-sa-lôm cỡi một con la; con la lủi vào dưới nhành xỏ rế của cây thông lớn, đầu Áp-sa-lôm phải vướng trong nhành, và người bị treo giữa khoảng trời đất; còn con la chở người thì thoát đi khỏi.

¹⁰And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak.

¹⁰Có người thấy điều đó, đến nói cùng Giô-áp rằng: Tôi đã thấy Áp-sa-lôm bị treo trên cây thông.

¹¹And Joab said unto the man that told him, And, behold, thou sawest him, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten shekels of silver, and a girdle.

¹¹Giô-áp đáp cùng người rằng: Chi! ngươi có thấy hắn ư? Vậy sao chẳng giết hắn tại chỗ đi? Nhược bằng có giết, ta sẵn lòng thưởng ngươi mười miếng bạc và một cái đai lưng.

¹²And the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand shekels of silver in mine hand, yet would I not put forth mine hand against the king's son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that none touch the young man Absalom.

¹²Nhưng người ấy thưa rằng: Dẫu tôi nắm trong tay một ngàn miếng bạc, cũng chẳng dám tra tay vào vương tử; vì chúng tôi có nghe vua biểu dặn ông, A-bi-sai và Y-tai rằng: Khá giữ lấy, chớ đụng đến chàng Áp-sa-lôm trai trẻ.

¹³Otherwise I should have wrought falsehood against mine own life: for there is no matter hid from the king, and thou thyself wouldest have set thyself against me.

¹³Vả lại, nếu tôi lấy lòng bất trung mà giết người, thì chẳng có thể nào giấu được vua; chắc chính ông làm người cáo tôi.

¹⁴Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.

¹⁴Giô-áp đáp: Ta chẳng thèm nán ở đây mà nghe ngươi. Người bèn lấy ba cây giáo đâm vào trái tim của Áp-sa-lôm, đương còn sống ở giữa cây thông.

¹⁵And ten young men that bare Joab's armor compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him.

¹⁵Ðoạn mười kẻ trai trẻ vác binh khí của Giô-áp, vây quanh Áp-sa-lôm, đánh và giết người đi.

¹⁶And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel: for Joab held back the people.

¹⁶Kế đó Giô-áp thổi kèn, dân sự thôi đuổi theo quân Y-sơ-ra-ên, bởi vì Giô-áp cản chúng.

¹⁷And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the wood, and laid a very great heap of stones upon him: and all Israel fled every one to his tent.

¹⁷Người ta lấy thây Áp-sa-lôm, ném vào trong một cái hố lớn ở giữa rừng, rồi chất đá lên truyền người thành một đống lớn. Hết thảy mọi người Y-sơ-ra-ên đều chạy trốn về trại mình.

¹⁸Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a pillar, which is in the king's dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called unto this day, Absalom's place.

¹⁸Áp-sa-lôm lúc còn sống có sai dựng một cái bia ở trong trũng vua; vì người nói rằng: Ta không có con trai đặng lưu danh ta. Rồi người lấy danh mình đặt cho cái bia đó; đến ngày nay người ta hãy còn gọi là bia Áp-sa-lôm.

¹⁹Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that the LORD hath avenged him of his enemies.

¹⁹A-hi-mát, con trai của Xa-đốc, nói cùng Giô-áp rằng: Xin cho phép tôi chạy đem cho vua tin lành nầy rằng Ðức Giê-hô-va đã xử công bình và giải cứu người khỏi kẻ thù nghịch mình.

²⁰And Joab said unto him, Thou shalt not bear tidings this day, but thou shalt bear tidings another day: but this day thou shalt bear no tidings, because the king's son is dead.

²⁰Giô-áp đáp: Ngày nay ngươi sẽ chẳng làm kẻ đem tin lành, một ngày khác ngươi sẽ làm; ngày nay cái tin chẳng được lành, vì vương tử đã chết.

²¹Then said Joab to Cushy, Go tell the king what thou hast seen. And Cushy bowed himself unto Joab, and ran.

²¹Giô-áp bèn nói cùng Cu-si rằng: Hãy đi thuật cho vua điều ngươi đã thấy. Cu-si lạy Giô-áp, rồi chạy đi.

²²Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab, But howsoever, let me, I pray thee, also run after Cushy. And Joab said, Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou hast no tidings ready?

²²A-hi-mát, con trai của Xa-đốc, lại nói cùng Giô-áp rằng: Mặc dầu xảy đến điều chi, hãy để cho tôi chạy theo sau Cu-si. Giô-áp tiếp: Hỡi con, cớ sao con muốn chạy đi? Việc báo tin nầy sẽ chẳng thưởng gì cho con.

²³But howsoever, said he, let me run. And he said unto him, Run. Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain, and overran Cushy.

²³Người thưa: Mặc dầu, tôi muốn chạy đi. Giô-áp nói cùng người rằng: Hãy chạy đi. Vậy, A-hi-mát chạy qua đồng bằng và bươn tới trước Cu-si.

²⁴And David sat between the two gates: and the watchman went up to the roof over the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold a man running alone.

²⁴Ða-vít ngồi ở giữa hai cái cửa thành. Còn quân canh trèo lên đỉnh lầu cửa thành, ở trên vách tường, ngước mắt lên, nhìn thấy có một người chạy ên.

²⁵And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said, If he be alone, there is tidings in his mouth. And he came apace, and drew near.

²⁵Quân canh la lên, và tâu cho vua biết. Vua nói: Nếu hắn một mình, chắc đem tin lành. Người chạy mãi và đi đến gần.

²⁶And the watchman saw another man running: and the watchman called unto the porter, and said, Behold another man running alone. And the king said, He also bringeth tidings.

²⁶Ðoạn quân canh thấy một người khác cũng chạy, bèn la với người giữ cửa mà rằng: Kìa lại có một người chạy ên. Vua nói: Hắn cũng đem tin lành.

²⁷And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings.

²⁷Quân canh tiếp: Thấy người chạy đầu, giống dạng A-hi-mát, con trai của Xa-đốc. Vua nói: Ấy là một người tử tế, người chắc đem tin lành.

²⁸And Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, All is well. And he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king, and said, Blessed be the LORD thy God, which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.

²⁸A-hi-mát bèn kêu lên và tâu cùng vua rằng: Mọi sự may mắn! Rồi người sấp mình xuống trước mặt vua, và tâu rằng: Ngợi khen Ðức Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời của vua, vì Ngài đã giải cứu vua khỏi những kẻ đã phản nghịch cùng vua chúa tôi!

²⁹And the king said, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king's servant, and me thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what it was.

²⁹Nhưng vua hỏi rằng: Chàng Áp-sa-lôm trai trẻ được bình an vô hại chăng? A-hi-mát thưa rằng: Khi Giô-áp sai kẻ tôi tớ vua và chính tôi đi, thì tôi thấy có sự ồn ào dữ dội dấy lên; nhưng tôi chẳng biết là chi.

³⁰And the king said unto him, Turn aside, and stand here. And he turned aside, and stood still.

³⁰Vua phán cùng người rằng: Hãy lui ra và đứng tại đó. Người bèn lui ra và chờ.

³¹And, behold, Cushy came; and Cushy said, Tidings, my lord the king: for the LORD hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.

³¹Cu-si bèn đến, và tâu rằng: Nầy là một tin lành cho vua chúa tôi. Ngày nay Ðức Giê-hô-va đã xử công bình cho vua và giải cứu vua khỏi các kẻ dấy lên phản nghịch cùng vua.

³²And the king said unto Cushy, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Cushy answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is.

³²Vua nói cùng Cu-si rằng: Chàng Áp-sa-lôm trai trẻ được bình an vô hại chăng? Cu-si đáp: Nguyện hết thảy những người nào phản nghịch đặng hại vua, bị đồng số phận với người trai trẻ ấy!

³³And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!

³³Vua rất cảm thương, bèn lên lầu cửa thành và khóc. Người vừa đi vừa nói rằng: Ôi, Áp-sa-lôm, con trai ta! Áp-sa-lôm, con trai ta! con trai ta! Ước chi chính ta chết thế cho con! Ôi, Áp-sa-lôm! con trai ta! con trai ta!
