¹Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: but David waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker.

¹Nhà Ða-vít và nhà Sau-lơ giao chiến nhau lâu ngày; nhưng Ða-vít càng ngày càng mạnh, còn nhà Sau-lơ càng ngày càng yếu.

²And unto David were sons born in Hebron: and his firstborn was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;

²Trong khi ở tại Hếp-rôn, Ða-vít sanh nhiều con trai. Con trưởng nam là Am-nôn, do A-hi-nô-am ở Gít-rê-ên;

³And his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;

³con thứ nhì là Ki-lê-áp, do A-bi-ga-in, trước làm vợ của Na-banh ở Cạt-mên; con thứ ba là Áp-ra-lôn; mẹ người là Ma-a-ca, con gái của Thanh-mai, vua Ghê-su-rơ;

⁴And the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;

⁴con thứ tư là A-đô-ni-gia, con trai của Ha-ghít; con thứ năm là Se-pha-tia, con trai của A-bi-tanh;

⁵And the sixth, Ithream, by Eglah David's wife. These were born to David in Hebron.

⁵và con thứ sáu là Dít-rê-am, do Éc-la là vợ Ða-vít. Ðó là những con trai đã sanh cho Ða-vít, trong khi người ở tại Hếp-rôn.

⁶And it came to pass, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner made himself strong for the house of Saul.

⁶Trọn trong lúc nhà Sau-lơ và nhà Ða-vít tranh chiến nhau, thì Áp-ne binh vị nhà Sau-lơ.

⁷And Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah: and Ishbosheth said to Abner, Wherefore hast thou gone in unto my father's concubine?

⁷Vả, Sau-lơ có một vợ lẽ, tên là Rít-ba, con gái của A-gia. Ích-bô-sết nói cùng Áp-ne rằng: Cớ sau ngươi đến cùng vợ lẽ của cha ta?

⁸Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ishbosheth, and said, Am I a dog's head, which against Judah do show kindness this day unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David, that thou chargest me to day with a fault concerning this woman?

⁸Áp-ne lấy làm giận lắm về các lời của Ích-bô-sết, mà nói rằng: Tôi há là đầu chó mà hầu việc Giu-đa sao? Hiện nay tôi hết lòng phú mình cho nhà của Sau-lơ, cha vua, cho các anh em bằng hữu vua, không để cho vua phải sa vào tay của Ða-vít; mà ngày nay vua lại trách tôi về lỗi phạm với người nữ nầy!

⁹So do God to Abner, and more also, except, as the LORD hath sworn to David, even so I do to him;

⁹Nguyện Ðức Chúa Trời phạt tôi cách nặng nề, nếu tôi chẳng vì Ða-vít làm thành mọi điều Ðức Giê-hô-va đã hứa cùng người:

¹⁰To translate the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beersheba.

¹⁰tức là dời nước khỏi nhà Sau-lơ qua nhà Ða-vít, và lập ngôi Ða-vít trên Y-sơ-ra-ên và trên Giu-đa, từ Ðan cho đến Bê -e-Sê-ba.

¹¹And he could not answer Abner a word again, because he feared him.

¹¹Ích-bô-sết không dám đáp một lời nào cùng Áp-ne, bởi vì sợ người.

¹²And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, Whose is the land? saying also, Make thy league with me, and, behold, my hand shall be with thee, to bring about all Israel unto thee.

¹²Áp-ne sai sứ đến Ða-vít, đặng thay mình nói rằng: Xứ sẽ thuộc về ai? Hãy lập giao ước với tôi, tay tôi sẽ giúp ông, đặng hiệp lại cả Y-sơ-ra-ên cho ông.

¹³And he said, Well; I will make a league with thee: but one thing I require of thee, that is, Thou shalt not see my face, except thou first bring Michal Saul's daughter, when thou comest to see my face.

¹³Ða-vít đáp: Phải lắm; ta sẽ lập giao ước với ngươi. Ta chỉ xin ngươi một điều, là khi ngươi đến thăm ta, chớ đến ra mắt ta trước khi chưa dẫn Mi-canh, con gái của Sau-lơ đến.

¹⁴And David sent messengers to Ishbosheth Saul's son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, which I espoused to me for an hundred foreskins of the Philistines.

¹⁴Ða-vít bèn sai sứ giả đến Ích-bô-sết con trai của Sau-lơ mà nói rằng: Hãy trả lại Mi-canh, vợ ta, mà ta đã cưới bằng sinh lễ một trăm dương bì Phi-li-tin.

¹⁵And Ishbosheth sent, and took her from her husband, even from Phaltiel the son of Laish.

¹⁵Ích-bô-sết bèn sai người bắt nàng nơi nhà chồng nàng, là Pha-ti-ên, con trai của La-ít

¹⁶And her husband went with her along weeping behind her to Bahurim. Then said Abner unto him, Go, return. And he returned.

¹⁶Chồng nàng vừa đưa đi vừa khóc, theo đến Ba-hu-rim. Ðoạn, Áp-ne nói với người rằng: Hãy đi, trở về nhà ngươi. Rồi Pha-ti-ên trở về.

¹⁷And Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, Ye sought for David in times past to be king over you:

¹⁷Áp-ne nói cùng các trưởng lão Y-sơ-ra-ên rằng: Ðã lâu nay, các ông ao ước được Ða-vít làm vua.

¹⁸Now then do it: for the LORD hath spoken of David, saying, By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.

¹⁸Vậy bây giờ, hãy làm đi; vì Ðức Giê-hô-va có phán cùng Ða-vít rằng: Ấy bởi Ða-vít, tôi tớ ta, mà ta sẽ giải cứu dân Y-sơ-ra-ên ta khỏi tay dân Phi-li-tin và khỏi tay mọi kẻ thù nghịch họ.

¹⁹And Abner also spake in the ears of Benjamin: and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel, and that seemed good to the whole house of Benjamin.

¹⁹Áp-ne cũng nói như lời ấy cùng dân Bên-gia-min; đoạn người đi đến Hếp-rôn, để tỏ cho Ða-vít biết sự nghị định của Y-sơ-ra-ên và của cả nhà Bên-gia-min.

²⁰So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. And David made Abner and the men that were with him a feast.

²⁰Vậy, Áp-ne đi đến Ða-vít tại Hếp-rôn, đem theo hai mươi người; rồi Ða-vít bày một tiệc đãi Áp-ne cùng những kẻ đi theo người.

²¹And Abner said unto David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king, that they may make a league with thee, and that thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth. And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.

²¹Áp-ne bèn nói cùng Ða-vít rằng: Tôi sẽ đi hội hiệp lại cả dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đến cùng vua, là chúa tôi, hầu cho chúng lập giao ước với chúa, và chúa sẽ làm vua cho cả Y-sơ-ra-ên, y như lòng chúa ước ao. Vậy, Ða-vít cho Áp-ne về, và người đi bình yên.

²²And, behold, the servants of David and Joab came from pursuing a troop, and brought in a great spoil with them: but Abner was not with David in Hebron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in peace.

²²Vả, đầy tớ của Ða-vít đi cùng Giô-áp đánh quân thù nghịch trở về, có đem nhiều của giặc. Áp-ne chẳng còn ở cùng Ða-vít tại Hếp-rôn, vì Ða-vít đã cho người về, và người đi bình an.

²³When Joab and all the host that was with him were come, they told Joab, saying, Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace.

²³Vậy, Giô-áp cùng cả đạo binh trở về; người có đem tin cho người hay rằng: Áp-ne, con trai Nê-rơ, đã đến cùng vua, vua để cho người về, và người đi bình yên.

²⁴Then Joab came to the king, and said, What hast thou done? behold, Abner came unto thee; why is it that thou hast sent him away, and he is quite gone?

²⁴Giô-áp bèn đến cùng vua mà hỏi rằng: Vua có làm điều chi? Kìa, Áp-ne đã đến nhà vua, cớ sau đã cho người đi về như vậy?

²⁵Thou knowest Abner the son of Ner, that he came to deceive thee, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all that thou doest.

²⁵Vua biết Áp-ne, con trai của Nê-rơ, chớ; người đến chỉ để gạt vua, để rình các đường đi ra đi vào của vua, và đặng biết mọi điều vua làm.

²⁶And when Joab was come out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, which brought him again from the well of Sirah: but David knew it not.

²⁶Ðoạn, Giô-áp lui khỏi Ða-vít, sai những sứ giả theo Áp-ne nối gót mà diệu người từ hồ chứa nước Si-ra về, mà không cho Ða-vít hay.

²⁷And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

²⁷Khi Áp-ne trở về Hếp-rôn, Giô-áp đem người riêng ra trong cửa thành, dường muốn nói việc kín cùng người; ở đó bèn đâm người trong bụng và giết đi, đặng báo thù huyết cho A-sa-ên, em của Giô-áp.

²⁸And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD for ever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner:

²⁸Ða-vít liền hay, bèn nói rằng: Ta và nước ta vô tội đời đời trước mặt Ðức Giê-hô-va về huyết của Áp-ne, con trai Nê-rơ.

²⁹Let it rest on the head of Joab, and on all his father's house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth on the sword, or that lacketh bread.

²⁹Nguyện huyết ấy đổ lại trên đầu Giô-áp và trên cả nhà cha người! Nguyện nhà Giô-áp chẳng thiếu người bị bịnh bạch trược, bịnh phung, kẻ bại xuội, kẻ bị gươm ngã chết, kẻ thiếu bánh ăn!

³⁰So Joab, and Abishai his brother slew Abner, because he had slain their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.

³⁰Giô-áp và A-bi-gia, em người, giết Áp-ne là như vậy; bởi vì Áp-ne đã giết A-sa-ên, em của hai người, sau khi chiến trận tại Ga-ba-ôn.

³¹And David said to Joab, and to all the people that were with him, Rend your clothes, and gird you with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner. And king David himself followed the bier.

³¹Ða-vít nói cùng Giô-áp và cả dân sự theo người rằng: Hãy xé áo các ngươi, thắt bao nơi lưng, và than khóc Áp-ne. Trước Ða-vít đi theo sau linh cữu.

³²And they buried Abner in Hebron: and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at the grave of Abner; and all the people wept.

³²Khi chúng đã chôn Áp-ne tại Hếp-rôn rồi, vua cất tiếng lên khóc tại mồ Áp-ne; cả dân sự cũng khóc.

³³And the king lamented over Abner, and said, Died Abner as a fool dieth?

³³Vua làm một bài điếu Áp-ne rằng: Áp-ne há đáng chết như kẻ ngu dại chết sao?

³⁴Thy hands were not bound, nor thy feet put into fetters: as a man falleth before wicked men, so fellest thou. And all the people wept again over him.

³⁴Tay ngươi chẳng bị trói, chơn người cũng chẳng mang xiềng; Ngươi ngã chết khác nào người ta ngã trước mặt kẻ sát nhơn.

³⁵And when all the people came to cause David to eat meat while it was yet day, David sware, saying, So do God to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or ought else, till the sun be down.

³⁵Nghe lời nầy, cả dân sự đều khóc. Ðoạn, hết thảy đến gần xin người ăn ít miếng bánh trước khi hết ngày; nhưng Ða-vít thề rằng: Nếu trước khi mặt trời lặn, ta ăn một miếng bánh hay là vật chi khác, nguyện Ðức Giê-hô-va phạt ta cách nặng nề.

³⁶And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them: as whatsoever the king did pleased all the people.

³⁶Dân sự đều để ý vào đó và lấy làm tốt lành, chẳng có điều gì vua làm mà chúng không lấy làm tốt lành.

³⁷For all the people and all Israel understood that day that it was not of the king to slay Abner the son of Ner.

³⁷Như vậy, trong ngày đó, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên nhìn biết rằng vua chẳng can gì đến tội giết Áp-ne, con trai của Nê-rơ.

³⁸And the king said unto his servants, Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel?

³⁸Vua nói cùng các đầy tớ mình rằng: Một quan trưởng, một đại nhơn trong Y-sơ-ra-ên đã thác ngày nay; các ngươi há chẳng biết sao?

³⁹And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah be too hard for me: the LORD shall reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness.

³⁹Về phần ta, ngày nay hãy còn yếu, dẫu rằng ta đã chịu xức dầu lập làm vua; và những kẻ kia, là các con trai của Xê-ru-gia, là cường bạo cho ta quá. Nguyện Ðức Giê-hô-va báo kẻ làm ác nầy, tùy sự ác của nó!
