¹Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:

¹Phao-lô và Si-la đi ngang qua thành Am-phi-bô-li và thành A-bô-lô-ni, rồi tới thành Tê-sa-lô-ni-ca; ở đó người Giu-đa có một nhà hội.

²And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

²Phao-lô tới nhà hội theo thói quen mình, và trong ba ngày Sa-bát bàn luận với họ,

³Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

³lấy Kinh Thánh cắt nghĩa và giải tỏ tường về Ðấng Christ phải chịu thương khó, rồi từ kẻ chết sống lại. Người nói rằng Ðấng Christ nầy, tức là Ðức Chúa Jêsus mà ta rao truyền cho các ngươi.

⁴And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

⁴Trong bọn họ có một vài người được khuyên dỗ nối theo Phao-lô và Si-la, lại cũng có rất nhiều người Gờ-réc vẫn kính sợ Ðức Chúa Trời, và mấy người đờn bà sang trọng trong thành nữa.

⁵But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

⁵Nhưng người Giu-đa đầy lòng ghen ghét, rủ mấy đứa hoang đàng nơi đường phố, xui giục đoàn dân gây loạn trong thành. Chúng nó xông vào nhà của Gia-sôn, tìm bắt Phao-lô và Si-la đặng điệu đến cho dân chúng.

⁶And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

⁶Tìm không được, bèn kéo Gia-sôn và mấy người anh em đến trước mặt các quan án trong thành, mà la lên rằng: Kìa những tên nầy đã gây thiên hạ nên loạn lạc, nay có đây,

⁷Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

⁷và Gia-sôn đã chứa chúng! Chúng nó hết thảy đều là đồ nghịch mạng Sê-sa, vì nói rằng có một vua khác, là Jêsus.

⁸And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

⁸Bấy nhiêu lời đó làm rối động đoàn dân và các quan án.

⁹And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.

⁹Song khi các quan án đòi Gia-sôn và các người khác bảo lãnh rồi, thì tha cho ra.

¹⁰And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

¹⁰Tức thì, trong ban đêm, anh em khiến Phao-lô và Si-la đi đến thành Bê-rê. Ðến nơi rồi, thì vào nhà hội người Giu-đa.

¹¹These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

¹¹Những người nầy có ý hẳn hoi hơn người Tê-sa-lô-ni-ca, đều sẵn lòng chịu lấy đạo, ngày nào cũng tra xem Kinh Thánh, để xét lời giảng có thật chăng.

¹²Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

¹²Trong bọn họ có nhiều người tin theo, với mấy người đờn bà Gờ-réc sang trọng, và đờn ông cũng khá đông.

¹³But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.

¹³Nhưng khi người Giu-đa ở thành Tê-sa-lô-ni-ca hay Phao-lô cũng truyền đạo Ðức Chúa Trời tại thành Bê-rê, bèn đến đó để rải sự xao xiến rối loạn trong dân chúng.

¹⁴And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.

¹⁴Tức thì, anh em khiến Phao-lô đi phía biển, còn Si-la với Ti-mô-thê ở lại thành Bê-rê.

¹⁵And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.

¹⁵Nhưng người dẫn Phao-lô đưa người đến thành A-thên; rồi trở về, đem lịnh cho Si-la và Ti-mô-thê phải đến cùng người cho gấp.

¹⁶Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

¹⁶Phao-lô đương đợi hai người tại thành A-thên, động lòng tức giận, vì thấy thành đều đầy những thần tượng.

¹⁷Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

¹⁷Vậy, người biện luận trong nhà hội với người Giu-đa và người mới theo đạo Giu-đa; lại mỗi ngày, với những kẻ nào mình gặp tại nơi chợ.

¹⁸Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

¹⁸Có mấy nhà triết học về phái Epicuriens và phái Stociens cũng cãi lẽ với người. Kẻ thì hỏi: Người già mép nầy muốn nói gì đó? Người thì nói: Người dường như giảng về các thần ngoại quốc (vì Phao-lô truyền cho chúng về Ðức Chúa Jêsus và sự sống lại).

¹⁹And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

¹⁹Chúng bắt người, đem đến nơi A-rê-ô-ba, mà hỏi rằng: Chúng tôi có thể biết được đạo mới mà ông dạy đó chăng?

²⁰For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

²⁰Vì chưng ông giảng cho chúng tôi nghe sự lạ. Chúng tôi muốn biết ý nghĩa điều đó là gì.

²¹(For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

²¹Vả, hết thảy người A-thên và người ngoại quốc ngụ tại thành A-thên chỉ lo nói và nghe việc mới lạ mà thôi.

²²Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

²²Bấy giờ, Phao-lô đứng giữa A-rê-ô-ba, nói rằng: Hỡi người A-thên, phàm việc gì ta cũng thấy các ngươi sốt sắng quá chừng.

²³For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

²³Vì khi ta trải khắp thành các ngươi, xem xét khí vật các ngươi dùng thờ phượng, thì thấy một bàn thờ có chạm chữ rằng: Thờ Chúa Không Biết. Vậy, Ðấng các ngươi thờ mà không biết đó, là Ðấng ta đương rao truyền cho.

²⁴God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

²⁴Ðức Chúa Trời đã dựng nên thế giới và mọi vật trong đó, là Chúa của trời đất, chẳng ngự tại đền thờ bởi tay người ta dựng nên đâu.

²⁵Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

²⁵Ngài cũng chẳng dùng tay người ta hầu việc Ngài dường như có cần đến sự gì, vì Ngài là Ðấng ban sự sống, hơi sống, muôn vật cho mọi loài.

²⁶And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

²⁶Ngài đã làm cho muôn dân sanh ra bởi chỉ một người, và khiến ở khắp trên mặt đất, định trước thì giờ đời người ta cùng giới hạn chỗ ở,

²⁷That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

²⁷hầu cho tìm kiếm Ðức Chúa Trời, và hết sức rờ tìm cho được, dẫu Ngài chẳng ở xa mỗi một người trong chúng ta.

²⁸For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

²⁸Vì tại trong Ngài, chúng ta được sống, động, và có, y như xưa một vài thi nhơn của các ngươi có nói rằng: Chúng ta cũng là dòng dõi của Ngài.

²⁹Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

²⁹Vậy, bởi chúng ta là dòng dõi Ðức Chúa Trời, thì chớ nên ngờ rằng Chúa giống như vàng, bạc, hay là đá, bởi công nghệ và tài xảo của người ta chạm trổ nên.

³⁰And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

³⁰Vậy thì, Ðức Chúa Trời đã bỏ qua các đời ngu muội đó, mà nay biểu hết thảy các người trong mọi nơi đều phải ăn năn,

³¹Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

³¹vì Ngài đã chỉ định một ngày, khi Ngài sẽ lấy sự công bình đoán xét thế gian, bởi Người Ngài đã lập, và Ðức Chúa Trời đã khiến Người từ kẻ chết sống lại, để làm chứng chắc về điều đó cho thiên hạ.

³²And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

³²Khi chúng nghe nói về sự sống lại của kẻ chết, kẻ thì nhạo báng, người thì nói rằng: Lúc khác chúng ta sẽ nghe ngươi nói về việc đó.

³³So Paul departed from among them.

³³Vì vậy, Phao-lô từ giữa đám họ bước ra.

³⁴Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

³⁴Nhưng có mấy kẻ theo người và tin; trong số đó có Ðê-ni, là một quan tòa nơi A-rê-ô-ba, và một người đờn bà tên là Ða-ma-ri, cùng các người khác.
