¹And when they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita.

¹Ðã được cứu như vậy rồi, chúng ta mới biết cù lao đó tên là Man-tơ.

²And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.

²Thổ nhơn đãi chúng ta một cách nhơn từ hiếm có, tiếp rước chúng ta thay thảy gần kề đống lửa lớn đã đốt, vì đang mưa và trời lạnh lẽo.

³And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.

³Phao-lô lượm được một bó củi khô, quăng vào trong lửa, xảy có con rắn lục từ trong bó củi bị nóng bò ra, quấn trên tay người.

⁴And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.

⁴Thổ nhơn thấy con vật đeo thòng lòng trên tay người, bèn nói với nhau rằng: Thật người nầy là tay giết người; nên dầu được cứu khỏi biển rồi, nhưng lẽ công bình chẳng khứng cho sống!

⁵And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.

⁵Nhưng Phao-lô rảy rắn vào lửa, chẳng thấy hề chi hết.

⁶Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.

⁶Họ ngờ người sẽ bị sưng lên, hoặc ngã xuống chết tức thì; nhưng đã đợi lâu rồi, chẳng thấy hại chi cho người, bèn đổi ý mà nói rằng thật là một vì thần.

⁷In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island, whose name was Publius; who received us, and lodged us three days courteously.

⁷Trong chỗ đó, có mấy đám rằng thuộc về người tù trưởng của đảo ấy, tên là Búp-li -u; người nầy đãi đằng chúng ta cách mến khách lắm trong ba ngày.

⁸And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him.

⁸Vả, cha của Búp-li -u nầy đương nằm trên giường đau bịnh nóng lạnh và bịnh lỵ. Phao-lô đi thăm người, cầu nguyện xong, đặt tay lên và chữa lành cho.

⁹So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came, and were healed:

⁹Nhơn đó, ai nấy trong đảo có bịnh, đều đến cùng Phao-lô, và được chữa lành cả.

¹⁰Who also honoured us with many honours; and when we departed, they laded us with such things as were necessary.

¹⁰Họ cũng tôn trọng chúng ta lắm, và lúc chúng ta đi, thì sửa soạn mọi đồ cần dùng cho chúng ta.

¹¹And after three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered in the isle, whose sign was Castor and Pollux.

¹¹Sau đó ba tháng, chúng ta xuống tàu ở A-léc-xan-tri mà đi, là tàu đã qua mùa đông tại đảo đó, và có hiệu là Ði-ốt-của.

¹²And landing at Syracuse, we tarried there three days.

¹²Tới thành Sy-ra-cu-sơ rồi, chúng ta ở lại đây ba ngày.

¹³And from thence we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium: and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli:

¹³Từ nơi đó, chạy theo mé biển Si-si-lơ, tới thành Rê-ghi-um. Ðến ngày mai, vì gió nam nổi lên, nên sau hai ngày nữa chúng ta tới thành Bu-xô-lơ.

¹⁴Where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days: and so we went toward Rome.

¹⁴Ở đó gặp anh em mời chúng ta ở lại bảy ngày; rồi thì đi đến thành Rô-ma.

¹⁵And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii forum, and The three taverns: whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage.

¹⁵Anh em trong thành nầy nghe nói về chúng ta, bèn ra đến Phô-rum Áp-bi -u và chỗ Ba Quán mà đón rước chúng ta. Phao-lô thấy anh em, thì cảm tạ Ðức Chúa Trời và vững chí.

¹⁶And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him.

¹⁶Khi chúng ta đã đến thành Rô-ma, Phao-lô được phép ở riêng với một người lính canh giữ.

¹⁷And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.

¹⁷Sau ba ngày, người mời các trưởng lão trong dân Giu-đa nhóm lại; đến rồi, người nói rằng: Hỡi anh em ta, dẫu tôi chẳng từng làm điều gì nghịch cùng dân chúng hoặc cùng thói tục tổ phụ chúng ta, mà tôi còn bị bắt tại thành Giê-ru-sa-lem và nộp trong tay người Rô-ma.

¹⁸Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me.

¹⁸Những người nầy đã xét việc tôi rồi, thì muốn tha ra, vì tôi chẳng hề làm điều gì đáng chết.

¹⁹But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar; not that I had ought to accuse my nation of.

¹⁹Song người Giu-đa chống cự điều đó, nên buộc tôi kêu nài đến Sê-sa, nhưng chẳng phải có ý kiện bổn quốc ta đâu.

²⁰For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.

²⁰Ấy vì cớ đó mà tôi đã xin gặp anh em và nói chuyện với, vì là bởi sự trông cậy của dân Y-sơ-ra-ên nên tôi mang lấy xiềng nầy.

²¹And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judaea concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee.

²¹Các ngươi ấy trả lời rằng: Chúng tôi chẳng tiếp thơ từ xứ Giu-đa nói về việc anh, và chẳng ai trong anh em đã đến mách cho chúng tôi hay là nói xấu về anh nữa.

²²But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.

²²Dầu vậy, chúng tôi muốn biết anh nghĩ làm sao; vì về phần đạo nầy, chúng tôi biết người ta hay chống nghịch khắp mọi nơi.

²³And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.

²³Họ đã hẹn ngày với người, bèn đến thăm tại nơi nhà trọ rất đông; từ buổi sáng đến chiều, người cứ làm chứng và giảng giải với họ về nước Ðức Chúa Trời, lấy luật pháp Môi-se và các đấng tiên tri mà gắng sức khuyên bảo họ về Ðức Chúa Jêsus.

²⁴And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.

²⁴Có người chịu tin lời người nói, có kẻ chẳng tin.

²⁵And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,

²⁵Bởi chưng họ không đồng ý với nhau và ra về, nên Phao-lô chỉ nói thêm lời nầy: Ðức Thánh Linh đã phán phải lắm, khi Ngài dùng đấng tiên tri Ê-sai mà phán cùng tổ phụ các ngươi rằng:

²⁶Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:

²⁶Hãy đến nơi dân nầy và nói rằng: Các ngươi lấy lỗ tai nghe mà chẳng hiểu chi; Lấy mắt xem mà không thấy gì.

²⁷For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

²⁷Vì lòng dân nầy đã nặng nề; Họ bịt lỗ tai, Nhắm mắt lại, E rằng mắt mình tự thấy, Tai mình tự nghe, Lòng mình tự hiểu, Và họ trở lại Mà ta chữa cho lành được chăng.

²⁸Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.

²⁸Vậy, hãy biết sự cứu rỗi của Ðức Chúa Trời nầy đã sai đến cho người ngoại; những người đó sẽ nghe theo vậy.

²⁹And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves.

²⁹Khi người nói xong, thì các ngươi Giu-đa đi ra, cãi lẫy cùng nhau dữ lắm.

³⁰And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him,

³⁰Phao-lô ở trọn hai năm tại một nhà trọ đã thuê. Người tiếp rước mọi người đến thăm mình,

³¹Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.

³¹giảng về nước Ðức Chúa Trời, và dạy dỗ về Ðức Chúa Jêsus Christ cách tự do trọn vẹn, chẳng ai ngăn cấm người hết.
