¹The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

²Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

²Người truyền đạo nói: Hư không của sự hư không, hư không của sự hư không, thảy đều hư không.

³What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

³Các việc lao khổ loài người làm ra dưới mặt trời, thì được ích lợi chi?

⁴One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.

⁴Ðời nầy qua, đời khác đến; nhưng đất cứ còn luôn luôn.

⁵The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.

⁵Mặt trời mọc, mặt trời lặn, nó lật đật trở về nơi nó mọc.

⁶The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.

⁶Gió thổi về hướng nam, kế xây qua hướng bắc; nó xây đi vần lại không ngừng, rồi trở về vòng cũ nó.

⁷All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.

⁷Mọi sông đều đổ vào biển, song không hề làm đầy biển; nơi mà sông thường chảy vào, nó lại chảy về đó nữa.

⁸All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

⁸Muôn vật thảy đều lao khổ, loài người không thế nói ra được; mắt không hề chán ngó, tai chẳng hề nhàm nghe.

⁹The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

⁹Ðiều chi đã có, ấy là điều sẽ có; điều gì đã làm, ấy là điều sẽ làm nữa; chẳng có điều gì mới ở dưới mặt trời.

¹⁰Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

¹⁰Nếu có một vật chi mà người ta nói rằng: Hãy xem, cái nầy mới, vật ấy thật đã có rồi trong các thời đời trước ta.

¹¹There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

¹¹Người ta chẳng nhớ các đời trước, và các đời sau những người đến sau cũng sẽ chẳng nhớ đến nữa.

¹²I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

¹²Ta là người truyền đạo, đã làm vua Y-sơ-ra-ên tại Giê-ru-sa-lem.

¹³And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.

¹³Ta chuyên lòng lấy sự khôn ngoan mà tra khảo mọi việc làm ra dưới trời; ấy là một việc lao khổ mà Ðức Chúa Trời đã giao cho loài người để lo làm.

¹⁴I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

¹⁴Ta đã xem thấy mọi việc làm ra dưới mặt trời; kìa, thảy đều hư không, theo luồng gió thổi.

¹⁵That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

¹⁵Vật chi đã cong vẹo không thể ngay lại được, và vật gì thiếu không thể đếm được.

¹⁶I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.

¹⁶Ta nói trong lòng rằng: Nầy, ta đã được sự khôn ngoan lớn hơn hết thảy những người ở trước ta tại Giê-ru-sa-lem; thật lòng ta đã thấy nhiều sự khôn ngoan và tri thức.

¹⁷And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.

¹⁷Ta cũng chuyên lòng học biết sự khôn ngoan, và biết sự ngu dại điên cuồng; ta nhìn biết điều đó cũng là theo luồng gió thổi.

¹⁸For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

¹⁸Vì nếu sự khôn ngoan nhiều, sự phiền não cũng nhiều; ai thêm sự tri thức ắt thêm sự đau đớn.
