¹A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.

²It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.

²Ði đến nhà tang chế hơn là đến nhà yến tiệc; vì tại đó thấy sự cuối cùng của mọi người; và người sống để vào lòng.

³Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.

³Buồn rầu hơn vui vẻ; vì nhờ mặt buồn, lòng được vui.

⁴The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

⁴Lòng người khôn ngoan ở trong nhà tang chế, còn lòng kẻ ngu muội ở tại nhà vui sướng.

⁵It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.

⁵Thà nghe lời quở trách của người khôn ngoan, còn hơn là câu hát của kẻ ngu muội.

⁶For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.

⁶Vì tiếng cười của kẻ ngu muội giống như tiếng gai nhọn nổ dưới nồi. Ðiều đó cũng là sự hư không.

⁷Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.

⁷Phải, sự sách thủ tiền tài làm cho kẻ khôn ra ngu, và của hối lộ khiến cho hư hại lòng.

⁸Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

⁸Cuối cùng của một việc hơn sự khởi đầu nó; lòng kiên nhẫn hơn lòng kiêu ngạo.

⁹Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

⁹Chớ vội giận; vì sự giận ở trong lòng kẻ ngu muội.

¹⁰Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.

¹⁰Chớ nói rằng: Nhơn sao ngày trước tốt hơn ngày bây giờ? Vì hỏi vậy là chẳng khôn.

¹¹Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.

¹¹Sự khôn ngoan cũng tốt bằng cơ nghiệp; nó có ích cho những người thấy mặt trời.

¹²For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.

¹²Vì sự khôn ngoan che thân cũng như tiền bạc che thân vậy; nhưng sự khôn ngoan thắng hơn, vì nó giữ mạng sống cho người nào đã được nó.

¹³Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?

¹³Hãy xem xét công việc của Ðức Chúa Trời; vì vật gì Ngài đã đánh cong, ai có thể làm ngay lại được?

¹⁴In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.

¹⁴Trong ngày thới thạnh hãy vui mừng, trong ngày tai nạn hay coi chừng; vì Ðức Chúa Trời đặt ngày nầy đối với ngày kia, hầu cho người đời chẳng thấy trước đặng điều xảy ra sau mình.

¹⁵All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.

¹⁵Trong những người hư không của ta, ta đã thấy cả điều nầy: Người công bình tuy công bình cũng phải hư mất; và kẻ hung ác tuy hung ác lại được trường thọ.

¹⁶Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself ?

¹⁶Chớ công bình quá, cũng đừng làm ra mình khôn ngoan quá; cớ sao làm thiệt hại cho mình?

¹⁷Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?

¹⁷Cũng chớ nên hung hăng quá, và đừng ăn ở như kẻ ngu muội; cớ sao ngươi chết trước kỳ định?

¹⁸It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.

¹⁸Ngươi giữ được điều nầy, ấy là tốt; mà lại cũng đừng nới tay khỏi điều kia; vì ai kính sợ Ðức Chúa Trời ắt tránh khỏi mọi điều đó.

¹⁹Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.

¹⁹Sự khôn ngoan khiến cho người khôn có sức mạnh hơn là mười kẻ cai trị ở trong thành.

²⁰For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.

²⁰Thật, chẳng có người công bình ở trên đất làm điều thiện, mà không hề phạm tội.

²¹Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:

²¹Chớ để lòng về mọi lời người ta nói, e ngươi nghe kẻ tôi tớ mình chưởi rủa mình chăng.

²²For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.

²²Vì thường khi lòng ngươi cũng biết mình đã rủa kẻ khác.

²³All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.

²³Ta đã lấy sự khôn ngoan nghiệm xét mọi sự ấy; ta nói rằng: Ta sẽ ở khôn ngoan; nhưng sự khôn ngoan cách xa ta.

²⁴That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?

²⁴Vả, điều chi xa quá, điều chi sâu thẩm lắm, ai có thể tìm được?

²⁵I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:

²⁵Ta lại hết lòng chuyên lo cho hiểu biết, xét nét, kiếm tìm sự khôn ngoan và chánh lý muôn vật, lại cho biết rằng gian ác là dại dột và sự dại dột là điên cuồng.

²⁶And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

²⁶Ta tìm thấy một điều cay đắng hơn sự chết, ấy là một người đờn bà có lòng giống như lưới bẫy, tay tợ như dây tói: ai ở đẹp lòng Ðức Chúa Trời sẽ thoát khỏi nó; còn kẻ có tội sẽ bị nó vấn lấy.

²⁷Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:

²⁷Kẻ truyền đạo nói: Sau khi xem xét muôn sự từng điều từng vật, đặng tìm chánh lý, thì nầy là điều ta tìm được;

²⁸Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.

²⁸ấy là lòng ta hãy còn tìm mà chưa tìm ra: trong một ngàn người đờn ông ta đã tìm được một người; còn trong cả thảy người đờn bà ta chẳng tìm được một ai hết.

²⁹Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.

²⁹Nhưng nầy là điều ta tìm được: Ðức Chúa Trời đã dựng nên người ngay thẳng; song loài người có tìm kiếm ra lắm mưu kế.
