¹In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day all their inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel.

¹Ðương lúc đó, chẳng có một vua nơi Y-sơ-ra-ên; chính hồi ấy, chi phái Ðan đi tìm một địa phận đặng lập nghiệp; vì từ trước đến giờ, trong chi phái Y-sơ-ra-ên, chi phái nầy chưa nhận được sản nghiệp nào hết.

²And the children of Dan sent of their family five men from their coasts, men of valor, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land: who when they came to mount Ephraim, to the house of Micah, they lodged there.

²Vậy, người Ðan chọn trong chi phái mình năm người mạnh dạn, sai từ Xô-rê-a và Ê-ta-ôn đi khắp nơi do thám xứ, và dặn họ rằng: Hãy đi do thám xứ. Chúng sang qua núi Ép-ra-im, đến nhà Mi-ca, và ngủ đêm ở đó.

³When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite: and they turned in thither, and said unto him, Who brought thee hither? and what makest thou in this place? and what hast thou here?

³Chúng đương ở gần bên nhà Mi-ca, thì nghe tiếng của gã trẻ tuổi, là người Lê-vi, bèn lại gần mà hỏi rằng: Ai dẫn ngươi đến đây? Ngươi ở đây làm chi, và ở chỗ nầy có gì?

⁴And he said unto them, Thus and thus dealeth Micah with me, and hath hired me, and I am his priest.

⁴Người đáp: Mi-ca có đãi tôi thế nầy, thế nầy, cấp cho tôi lương tiền, dùng tôi làm thầy tế lễ cho người.

⁵And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.

⁵Chúng tiếp: Thế thì, hãy hỏi ý Ðức Chúa Trời, để chúng ta biết con đường chúng ta đi đây sẽ có may mắn chăng.

⁶And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the LORD is your way wherein ye go.

⁶Thầy tế lễ đáp: Hãy đi bình an, Ðức Giê-hô-va đoái đến con đường của các ngươi đi.

⁷Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man.

⁷Vậy, năm người ấy lên đường, đến La-ít, thấy dân sự tại đó có thói tục dân Si-đôn, ở an ổn, bình tịnh, và vững chắc. Trong kẻ quản hạt xứ đó, chẳng có ai làm cho chúng bị hại chút đỉnh nào hết; chúng vốn cách xa dân Si-đôn, chẳng có việc chi với ai cả.

⁸And they came unto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol: and their brethren said unto them, What say ye?

⁸Kế ấy, năm người trở về cùng các anh em mình tại Xô-rê-a và Ê-ta-ôn, thì anh em hỏi chúng rằng: Các anh đã làm gì?

⁹And they said, Arise, that we may go up against them: for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good: and are ye still? be not slothful to go, and to enter to possess the land.

⁹Năm người đáp: Hè! hãy đi lên đánh chúng nó, vì chúng tôi có thấy xứ ấy thật lấy làm tốt nhứt. Uûa kìa! anh em ở đó chẳng làm chi sao? Chớ nên biếng nhác mà đi lên chiếm lấy xứ ấy làm sản nghiệp.

¹⁰When ye go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and to a large land: for God hath given it into your hands; a place where there is no want of any thing that is in the earth.

¹⁰Khi anh em vào xứ đó, sẽ đến cùng một dân an ổn. Xứ ấy thật rất rộng, và Ðức Chúa Trời đã phó nó vào tay anh em; quả thật một nơi chẳng thiếu vật chi đất sanh sản.

¹¹And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men appointed with weapons of war.

¹¹Vậy, sáu trăm người về dòng Ðan cầm binh khí, đi từ Xô-rê-a và Ê-ta-ôn

¹²And they went up, and pitched in Kirjathjearim, in Judah: wherefore they called that place Mahanehdan unto this day: behold, it is behind Kirjathjearim.

¹²lên đóng trại tại Ki-ri-át-Giê-a-rim, trong đất Giu-đa; nên chỗ đó hãy còn gọi là trại quân Ðan cho đến ngày nay; nó ở phía sau Ki-ri-át-Giê-a-rim.

¹³And they passed thence unto mount Ephraim, and came unto the house of Micah.

¹³Từ đó chúng đi sang núi Ép-ra-im và đến nhà Mi-ca.

¹⁴Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.

¹⁴Bấy giờ, năm người đã đi do thám xứ La-ít cất tiếng nói cùng anh em mình rằng: Trong nhà nầy có một cái ê-phót, những thê-ra-phim, và một tượng chạm với chơn bằng vàng gang; anh em có biết chăng? Vậy, bây giờ hãy xem điều anh em phải làm.

¹⁵And they turned thitherward, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, even unto the house of Micah, and saluted him.

¹⁵Chúng bèn lại gần, vào nhà người Lê-vi trẻ tuổi, tức là vào nhà của Mi-ca, và chào người.

¹⁶And the six hundred men appointed with their weapons of war, which were of the children of Dan, stood by the entering of the gate.

¹⁶Sáu trăm người về dòng Ðan cầm binh khí giữ ở ngoài cửa.

¹⁷And the five men that went to spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image: and the priest stood in the entering of the gate with the six hundred men that were appointed with weapons of war.

¹⁷Nhưng năm người đã đi do thám xứ, đi lên, vào nhà, và cướp lấy tượng chạm, chơn bằng gang, ê-phót, và những thê-ra-phim, đương khi thầy tế lễ đứng tại cửa cùng sáu trăm người cầm binh khí.

¹⁸And these went into Micah's house, and fetched the carved image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image. Then said the priest unto them, What do ye?

¹⁸Năm người đó vào nhà cướp lấy các vật ấy rồi, thầy tế lễ bèn hỏi chúng rằng: Các ngươi làm chi vậy?

¹⁹And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?

¹⁹Chúng đáp rằng: Hãy nín đi, lấy tay bụm miệng lại, và đến cùng chúng ta, làm cha và thầy tế lễ cho chúng ta. Ngươi làm thầy tế lễ cho một nhà, hay là làm thầy tế lễ cho một chi phái, một họ hàng trong Y-sơ-ra-ên, điều nào khá hơn?

²⁰And the priest's heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people.

²⁰Thầy tế lễ mừng lòng, lấy ê-phót, những thê-ra-phim, và tượng chạm, rồi nhập với bọn ấy.

²¹So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the carriage before them.

²¹Chúng bèn xây lại, lên đường, để cho con trẻ, súc vật, và đồ hành lý đi trước.

²²And when they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men that were in the houses near to Micah's house were gathered together, and overtook the children of Dan.

²²Chúng đã đi xa khỏi nhà Mi-ca rồi, có những kẻ ở gần nhà Mi-ca nhóm lại đuổi theo người Ðan.

²³And they cried unto the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company?

²³Vì chúng kêu la sau họ, người Ðan xây lại mà nói cùng Mi-ca rằng: Ngươi có điều chi? Vì sao ngươi có nhóm lại những kẻ đó?

²⁴And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee?

²⁴Mi-ca đáp: Các ngươi đã cướp lấy các thần ta đã làm nên, và luôn thầy tế lễ, mà đi. Còn chi lại cho ta? Sao các ngươi còn hỏi rằng ta có làm điều chi?

²⁵And the children of Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows run upon thee, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy household.

²⁵Người Ðan đáp cùng Mi-ca rằng: Chớ cho ta nghe tiếng ngươi nữa, e có ngươi nổi giận xông hãm các ngươi, làm cho ngươi và nhà ngươi đều bị mất sự sống chăng.

²⁶And the children of Dan went their way: and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back unto his house.

²⁶Bấy giờ người Ðan cứ đi đường, còn Mi-ca thấy chúng mạnh hơn mình, bèn trở về nhà mình.

²⁷And they took the things which Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire.

²⁷Ấy vậy, sau khi đã cướp lấy vật của Mi-ca đã chế ra, và thầy tế lễ người đã có trong nhà mình, thì chúng xông vào dân La-ít, là một dân ở bình tịnh, vững chắc, lấy gươm giết dân đó, rồi châm lửa đốt thành.

²⁸And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no business with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Bethrehob. And they built a city, and dwelt therein.

²⁸Chẳng có ai đến tiếp cứu dân La-ít, vì thành ở xa Si-đôn, và không giao thiệp với ai hết; nó ở trong trũng chạy về hướng Bết-Rê-hóp. Người Ðan xây đắp thành lại, và ở lại đó;

²⁹And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first.

²⁹lấy tên Ðan, là tổ phụ mình, con trai của Y-sơ-ra-ên, mà đặt cho thành; còn trước kia tên thành ấy là La-ít.

³⁰And the children of Dan set up the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.

³⁰Ðoạn, người Ðan dựng tượng chạm, rồi Giô-na-than, con trai Ghẹt-sôn, cháu Môi-se, và hết thảy hậu tự của người, đều làm thầy tế lễ trong chi phái Ðan cho đến ngày chúng bị lưu đày khỏi xứ.

³¹And they set them up Micah's graven image, which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.

³¹Chúng giữ tượng chạm của Mi-ca làm nên trọn trong lúc đền của Ðức Chúa Trời ở tại Si-lô.
