¹Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

¹Nầy là các dân tộc mà Ðức Giê-hô-va để còn lại, đặng dùng chúng nó thử thách người Y-sơ-ra-ên nào chưa từng thấy những chiến trận Ca-na-an.

²Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;

²Ngài chỉ muốn thử thách các dòng dõi mới của dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, tập cho chúng nó việc chiến trận, nhứt là những kẻ chưa từng thấy chiến trận khi trước.

³Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baalhermon unto the entering in of Hamath.

³Các dân tộc nầy là dân Phi-li-tin cùng năm vua chúng nó, hết thảy dân Ca-na-an, dân Si-đôn, và dân Hê-vít ở tại núi Li-ban, từ núi Ba-anh-Hẹt-môn cho đến cửa Ha-mát.

⁴And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

⁴Ðức Giê-hô-va dùng các dân tộc nầy để thử thách Y-sơ-ra-ên, đặng xem thử chúng nó có ý vâng theo các điều răn mà Ngài cậy Môi-se truyền cho tổ phụ chúng nó chăng.

⁵And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:

⁵Như vậy, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên ở chung cùng dân Ca-na-an, dân Hê-tít, dân A-mô-rít, dân Phê-rê-sít, dân Hê-vít, dân Giê-bu-sít,

⁶And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

⁶cưới con gái của chúng nó làm vợ, gả con gái mình cho con trai chúng nó, và hầu việc các thần chúng nó.

⁷And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves.

⁷Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên còn làm điều ác trước mặt Ðức Giê-hô-va, quên Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời mình, cúng thờ các hình tượng Ba-anh và A-sê-ra.

⁸Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushanrishathaim eight years.

⁸Vì vậy, cơn thạnh nộ của Ðức Giê-hô-va nổi phừng cùng Y-sơ-ra-ên, Ngài phó chúng vào tay Cu-san-Ri-sa-tha-im, vua nước Mê-sô-bô-ta-mi. Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên bị tám năm phục dịch vua Cu-san-Ri-sa-tha-im.

⁹And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.

⁹Kế ấy, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên kêu la cùng Ðức Giê-hô-va; Ðức Giê-hô-va bèn dấy lên cho chúng nó một người giải cứu, là Oát-ni-ên, con trai của Kê-na, em thứ của Ca-lép, và người ấy giải cứu họ.

¹⁰And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim.

¹⁰Thần của Ðức Giê-hô-va cảm động người, người đoán xét Y-sơ-ra-ên, và đi ra chiến trận. Ðức Giê-hô-va phó Cu-san-Ri-sa-tha-im, vua A-ram, vào tay người, khiến cho người thắng Cu-san-Ri-sa-tha-im.

¹¹And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

¹¹Xứ được hòa bình trong bốn mươi năm; kế đó, Oát-ni-ên, con trai Kê-na, qua đời.

¹²And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.

¹²Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên lại làm điều ác trước mặt Ðức Giê-hô-va; nên Ðức Giê-hô-va khiến Éc-lôn, vua Mô-áp trở nên cường thạnh để hãm đánh Y-sơ-ra-ên.

¹³And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.

¹³Vậy, Éc-lôn nhóm hiệp chung quanh mình dân Am-môn và dân A-ma-léc, kéo đi đánh Y-sơ-ra-ên và chiếm lấy thành Cây chà là.

¹⁴So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

¹⁴Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên bị phục dịch Éc-lôn, vua Mô-áp, trong mười tám năm.

¹⁵But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.

¹⁵Ðoạn, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên kêu la cùng Ðức Giê-hô-va, Ðức Giê-hô-va dấy lên cho chúng một đấng giải cứu, là Ê-hút, con trai Ghê-ra, thuộc về chi phái Bên-gia-min, là người có tật thuận tay tả. Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên sai người đem lễ cống cho Éc-lôn, vua Mô-áp.

¹⁶But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.

¹⁶Ê-hút tự làm lấy một cây gươm hai lưỡi, dài một thước, và đeo theo trong mình áo nơi háng hữu.

¹⁷And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.

¹⁷Vậy, người đem dâng lễ cống cho Éc-lôn, vua Mô-áp, là một người rất mập.

¹⁸And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.

¹⁸Khi dâng lễ cống rồi, bèn cho những kẻ đã đem lễ vật đến đi về.

¹⁹But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.

¹⁹Nhưng chánh người đến hầm lấy đá ở gần Ghinh-ganh, thì trở lại, nói rằng: Hỡi vua, tôi có một lời tâu kín cùng vua. Vua truyền: Hãy nín! Hết thảy những kẻ hầu cận vua bèn đi ra.

²⁰And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlor, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.

²⁰Bấy giờ, vua đương ngồi một mình nơi lầu mát; Ê-hút đến gần mà nói rằng: Tôi có một lời của Ðức Chúa Trời tâu lại với vua. Éc-lôn vừa đứng dậy khỏi ngai;

²¹And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:

²¹Ê-hút bèn giơ tay tả ra rút gươm đeo ở phía hữu, mà đâm người nơi bụng.

²²And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.

²²Cán gươm cũng lút theo lưỡi, mỡ líp lại xung quanh lưỡi gươm; vì người không rút gươm ra khỏi bụng, nó thấu ra sau lưng.

²³Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlor upon him, and locked them.

²³Ðoạn, Ê-hút lánh ra nơi hiên cửa, đóng các cửa lầu mát lại và gài chốt.

²⁴When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlor were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.

²⁴Khi Ê-hút đi ra khỏi, các đầy tớ đến xem, thấy các cửa lầu mát đều đóng gài chốt, thì nói với nhau rằng: Hoặc vua đi ngơi trong lầu mát chăng.

²⁵And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlor; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.

²⁵Chúng đợi rất lâu, đến đỗi hổ thẹn; song vì không thấy vua mở cửa phòng, bèn lấy chìa khóa và mở: kìa thấy chúa mình đã chết, nằm sải trên đất.

²⁶And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.

²⁶Trong khi chúng trì huởn, Ê-hút đã trốn qua khỏi các hầm đá, lánh đến Sê-ri-a.

²⁷And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.

²⁷Người vừa đến, bèn thổi kèn lên trong núi Ép-ra-im; dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đều cùng người xuống khỏi núi và chính người đi ở đầu hết.

²⁸And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.

²⁸Ê-hút nói cùng chúng rằng: Hãy theo ta, vì Ðức Giê-hô-va đã phó vào tay các ngươi dân Mô-áp, là kẻ thù nghịch các ngươi. Chúng đều theo người xuống chiếm cứ các chỗ cạn sông Giô-đanh, là đường đi đến Mô-áp, cấm không cho ai đi qua.

²⁹And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valor; and there escaped not a man.

²⁹Vậy, trong lúc đó dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đánh giết chừng mười ngàn người Mô-áp, thảy đều là tay mạnh mẽ, can đãm, không một ai thoát khỏi được.

³⁰So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.

³⁰Trong ngày đó, dân Mô-áp bị phục dưới tay Y-sơ-ra-ên; xứ được hòa bình trong tám mươi năm.

³¹And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.

³¹Sau Ê-hút, có Sam-ga, con trai của A-nát. Người dùng một cây đót bò mà đánh giết sáu trăm người Phi-li-tin, và cũng giải cứu Y-sơ-ra-ên.
