¹At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,

¹Lúc ấy, Hê-rốt là vua chư hầu, nghe tiếng đồn Ðức Chúa Jêsus,

²And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.

²thì phán cùng bầy tôi rằng: Ðây là Giăng Báp-tít. Người chết đi sống lại, nhơn đó mới làm được mấy phép lạ như vậy.

³For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife.

³Số là, bởi cớ Hê-rô-đia, vợ Phi-líp, là em mình, nên vua Hê-rốt đã truyền bắt trói Giăng và bỏ tù.

⁴For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.

⁴Vì Giăng có can vua rằng: Vua không có phép được lấy người đó làm vợ.

⁵And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.

⁵Vua muốn giết Giăng, song sợ dân chúng, vì họ đều tôn Giăng là đấng tiên tri.

⁶But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.

⁶Vừa đến ngày ăn mừng sanh nhựt vua Hê-rốt, con gái của Hê-rô-đia nhảy múa ở giữa người dự đám, vua lấy làm thích lắm,

⁷Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.

⁷đến nỗi lấy lời thề mà hứa cho con gái ấy điều chi nàng muốn xin.

⁸And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger.

⁸Vậy, nàng bị mẹ xui giục, bèn tâu rằng: Xin lấy cái đầu Giăng Báp-tít để trên mâm mà cho tôi đây.

⁹And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.

⁹Vua lấy làm buồn rầu; song vì đã thề lỡ rồi và có những người dự yến ở đó, nên truyền cho nàng như lời.

¹⁰And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.

¹⁰Vua bèn sai người chém Giăng trong ngục,

¹¹And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.

¹¹rồi họ để đầu người trên mâm mà đem cho con gái ấy, nàng bèn đem cho mẹ mình.

¹²And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

¹²Ðoạn, các môn đồ của Giăng đến, lấy xác mà chôn, rồi đi báo tin cho Ðức Chúa Jêsus.

¹³When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.

¹³Ðức Chúa Jêsus vừa nghe tin ấy liền bỏ đó xuống thuyền, đi tẻ ra nơi đồng vắng. Khi đoàn dân biết vậy, thì từ các thành đi bộ mà theo Ngài.

¹⁴And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.

¹⁴Ngài ở thuyền bước lên, thấy đoàn dân đông đúc, động lòng thương xót, mà chữa cho kẻ bịnh được lành.

¹⁵And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.

¹⁵Ðến chiều tối, môn đồ tới gần Ngài mà thưa rằng: Ở đây vắng vẻ, và trời tối rồi, xin thầy cho dân chúng về, để họ đi vào các làng đặng mua đồ ăn.

¹⁶But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.

¹⁶Ðức Chúa Jêsus phán rằng: Không cần họ phải đi; chính các ngươi hãy cho họ ăn.

¹⁷And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.

¹⁷Môn đồ thưa rằng: Chúng tôi có đây năm cái bánh và hai con cá mà thôi.

¹⁸He said, Bring them hither to me.

¹⁸Ngài phán rằng: Hãy đem đây cho ta.

¹⁹And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

¹⁹Ngài bèn truyền cho chúng ngồi xuống trên cỏ, đoạn, lấy năm cái bánh và hai con cá đó, ngửa mặt lên trời mà tạ ơn; rồi bẻ bánh ra đưa cho môn đồ, môn đồ phát cho dân chúng.

²⁰And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.

²⁰Ai nấy đều ăn no, còn bánh thừa lại thâu được đầy mười hai giỏ.

²¹And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.

²¹Số người ăn ước chừng năm ngàn, không kể đờn bà con nít.

²²And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

²²Kế đó, Ngài liền hối môn đồ xuống thuyền, qua trước bờ bên kia, trong khi Ngài đang truyền cho dân chúng tan đi.

²³And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

²³Xong rồi, Ngài lên núi để cầu nguyện riêng; đến chiều tối, Ngài ở đó một mình.

²⁴But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.

²⁴Bấy giờ, thuyền đã ra giữa biển rồi, vì gió ngược, nên bị sóng vỗ.

²⁵And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

²⁵Song đến canh tư đêm ấy, Ðức Chúa Jêsus đi bộ trên mặt biển mà đến cùng môn đồ.

²⁶And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

²⁶Khi thấy Ngài đi bộ trên mặt biển, thì môn đồ bối rối mà nói rằng: Ấy là một con ma; rồi sợ hãi mà la lên.

²⁷But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

²⁷Nhưng Ðức Chúa Jêsus liền phán rằng: Các ngươi hãy yên lòng; ấy là ta đây, đừng sợ!

²⁸And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.

²⁸Phi -e-rơ bèn thưa rằng: Lạy Chúa, nếu phải Chúa, xin khiến tôi đi trên mặt nước mà đến cùng Chúa.

²⁹And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

²⁹Ngài phán rằng: Hãy lại đây! Phi -e-rơ ở trên thuyền bước xuống, đi bộ trên mặt nước mà đến cùng Ðức Chúa Jêsus.

³⁰But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.

³⁰Song khi thấy gió thổi, thì Phi -e-rơ sợ hãi, hòng sụp xuống nước, bèn la lên rằng: Chúa ơn, xin cứu lấy tôi!

³¹And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

³¹Tức thì Ðức Chúa Jêsus giơ tay ra nắm lấy người, mà nói rằng: Hỡi người ít đức tin, sao ngươi hồ nghi làm vậy?

³²And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.

³²Ngài cùng Phi -e-rơ lên thuyền rồi, thì gió yên lặng.

³³Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

³³Các người trong thuyền bèn đến quì lạy Ngài mà nói rằng: Thầy thật là Con Ðức Chúa Trời!

³⁴And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.

³⁴Khi qua biển rồi, Ngài và môn đồ đến xứ Ghê-nê-xa-rết.

³⁵And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;

³⁵Người xứ đó nhận biết Ngài, thì sai người báo tin cho khắp các miền xung quanh, và họ đem các kẻ bịnh đến cùng Ngài,

³⁶And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.

³⁶xin chỉ cho rờ đến viền áo mà thôi; vậy ai rờ đến cũng đều được lành bịnh cả.
