¹And in these days, the disciples multiplying, there came a murmuring of the Hellenists at the Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily ministration,

¹વધારે ને વધારે લોકો ઈસુના શિષ્યો થવા લાગ્યા પરંતુ આ સમય દરમ્યાન જ, ગ્રીક ભાષી યહૂદિઓએ બીજા યહૂદિઓને દલીલો કરી. તેઓએ ફરીયાદ કરી કે રોજ શિષ્યોને જે વહેંચવામાં આવે છે તેમાંથી તેઓની વિધવાઓને તેઓનો ભાગ મળતો નથી.

²and the twelve, having called near the multitude of the disciples, said, `It is not pleasing that we, having left the word of God, do minister at tables;

²તે બાર પ્રેરિતોએ આખા સમૂહને બોલાવ્યો. પ્રેરિતોએ તેઓને કહ્યું, “દેવના વચનોનો બોધ આપવાનું આપણું કામ અટકી ગયું છે. તે સારું નથી. લોકોને કંઈક ખાવાનું વહેંચવામાં મદદ કરવા કરતાં દેવના વચનોનો બોધ આપવાનું ચાલુ રાખવું તે વધારે સારું છે.

³look out, therefore, brethren, seven men of you who are well testified of, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may set over this necessity,

³તેથી ભાઈઓ, તમારા પોતાનામાંથી સાત માણસો પસંદ કરો. લોકો જેને સારા માણસો કહે તેવા તે હોવા જોઈએ. તેઓ આત્માથી ભરપૂર અને જ્ઞાનથી ભરપૂર હોવા જોઈએ. આપણે તેઓને આ કામ કરવાનું સોંપીશું.

⁴and we to prayer, and to the ministration of the word, will give ourselves continually.`

⁴પછી આપણે આપણો બધો સમય પ્રાર્થનામાં તથા વાતની (પ્રભુની) સેવા કરવામાં વાપરી શકીશું.”

⁵And the thing was pleasing before all the multitude, and they did choose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch,

⁵સમગ્ર સમૂહને આ વિચાર ગમ્યો. તેથી તેઓએ સાત પુરુંષોની પસંદગી કરી. સ્તેફન (વિશ્વાસથી અને પવિત્ર આત્માથી ભરપૂર માણસ) ફિલિપ, પ્રોખરસ, નિકાનોર, તીમોન, પાર્મિનાસ, અને નિકોલાઉસ (અંત્યોખનો યહૂદિ થયેલો માણસ).

⁶whom they did set before the apostles, and they, having prayed, laid on them [their] hands.

⁶પછીથી તેઓએ આ માણસોને પ્રેરિતો સમક્ષ રજૂ કર્યા. પ્રેરિતોએ પ્રાર્થના કરી અને તેઓએ તેઓના હાથ તેઓના પર મૂક્યા.

⁷And the word of God did increase, and the number of the disciples did multiply in Jerusalem exceedingly; a great multitude also of the priests were obedient to the faith.

⁷દેવની વાતોને વધારે ને વધારે લોકો સુધી પ્રચાર થતો ગયો. યરૂશાલેમમાં શિષ્યાની સંખ્યા મોટી થતી ગઇ. યહૂદિ યાજકોના મોટા સમૂહો પણ વિશ્વાસને આધીન થયા.

⁸And Stephen, full of faith and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people,

⁸સ્તેફનને મહાન આશીર્વાદ પ્રાપ્ત થયો. દેવે સ્તેફનને ચમત્કારો કરવાનું અને લોકોને દેવની સાબિતીઓ બતાવવાનું સાર્મથ્ય આપ્યું.

⁹and there arose certain of those of the synagogue, called of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of those from Cilicia, and Asia, disputing with Stephen,

⁹પરંતુ કેટલાક યહૂદિઓ આવ્યા અને સ્તેફનની સાથે દલીલો કરી. આ યહૂદિઓ સભામાંના હતા. તે સભા લિબર્તીની માટેની હતી. (આ સભા કુરેનીના યહૂદિઓ માટેની તથા આલેકસાંદ્રિયાના યહૂદિઓ માટેની હતી.) કિલીકિયા અને આસિયાના યહૂદિઓ તેઓની સાથે હતા. તેઓ બધાએ આવીને સ્તેફન સાથે દલીલો કરી.

¹⁰and they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit with which he was speaking;

¹⁰પરંતુ સ્તેફન આત્માની પ્રેરણાથી જ્ઞાન સાથે બોલતો. તેના શબ્દો એટલા મક્કમ હતા કે યહૂદિઓ તેની સાથે દલીલો કરી શક્યા નહિ.

¹¹then they suborned men, saying — `We have heard him speaking evil sayings in regard to Moses and God.`

¹¹તેથી યહૂદિઓએ કેટલાક માણસોને કહેવા માટે ઊભા કર્યા, “અમે સાંભળ્યું છે કે સ્તેફન, મૂસા અને દેવની વિરૂદ્ધ બોલ્યો.”

¹²They did stir up also the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and having come upon [him], they caught him, and brought [him] to the sanhedrim;

¹²આમ કરીને આ યહૂદિઓએ લોકોને, વડીલો તથા શાસ્ત્રીઓને મૂંઝવણમાં મૂંક્યા. તેઓ એટલા બધા ઉશ્કેરાયા કે તેઓએ આવીને સ્તેફનને પકડી લીધો. તેઓ તેને યહૂદિઓના બોધકોની સભામાં લઈ ગયા.

¹³they set up also false witnesses, saying, `This one doth not cease to speak evil sayings against this holy place and the law,

¹³યહૂદિઓ સભામાં કેટલાક માણસોને લાવ્યા. તેઓએ આ માણસોને સ્તેફન વિષે જૂઠું બોલવાનું કહ્યું. તે માણસોએ કહ્યું, “આ માણસ (સ્તેફન) હંમેશા આ પવિત્ર જગ્યા માટે ખરાબ કહે છે અને હંમેશા તે મૂસાના નિયમશાસ્ત્ર વિરૂદ્ધ દુર્ભાષણ કરે છે.

¹⁴for we have heard him saying, That this Jesus the Nazarean shall overthrow this place, and shall change the customs that Moses delivered to us;`

¹⁴અમે તેને કહેતાં સાંભળ્યો છે કે ઈસુ નાઝારી આ સ્થાનનો નાશ કરશે. તેણે એમ પણ કહ્યું છે કે મૂસાએ આપણને જે રીતરિવાજો આપ્યા છે તેને ઈસુ બદલી નાખશે.”

¹⁵and gazing at him, all those sitting in the sanhedrim saw his face as it were the face of a messenger.

¹⁵સભામાં બેઠેલા બધા લોકો સ્તેફન તરફ એકી નજરે જોઈ રહ્યા. તેનો ચહેરો એક દૂતના જેવો દેખાતો હતો અને તેઓએ તે જોયો.
