¹And Jacob hath gone on his way, and messengers of God come upon him;

¹याकोबानेही ते ठिकाण सोडले. तो प्रवास करीत असताना त्याला देवदूत भेटले.

²and Jacob saith, when he hath seen them, `This [is] the camp of God;` and he calleth the name of that place `Two Camps.`

²जेव्हा याकोबाने त्यांना पाहिले तेव्हा तो म्हणाला, “हा देवाचा तळ आहे.” म्हणून त्याने त्या जागेचे नाव ‘महनाइम’ ठेवले.

³And Jacob sendeth messengers before him unto Esau his brother, towards the land of Seir, the field of Edom,

³याकोबाचा भाऊ एसाव सेइर नावाच्या देशात राहात होता. हा देश म्हणजे अदोमाचा डोंगराळ प्रांत होता. याकोबाने एसावाकडे निरोपे पाठवले.

⁴and commandeth them, saying, `Thus do ye say to my lord, to Esau: Thus said thy servant Jacob, With Laban I have sojourned, and I tarry until now;

⁴त्याने त्यांना सांगितले “तुम्ही या सर्व गोष्टी माझे स्वामी एसाव त्यांना सांगा, ‘आपला सेवक याकोब असे म्हणतो की आजपर्यंत अनेक वर्षे मी लाबानाकडे राहिलो;

⁵and I have ox, and ass, flock, and man-servant, and maid-servant, and I send to declare to my lord, to find grace in his eyes.`

⁵माझ्यापाशी पुष्कळ गाईगुरे, गाढवे, शेरडामेंढराचे कळप आणि दास व दासी आहेत. महराज, आपण आमचा स्वीकार करावा अशी विंनती करण्यासाठी मी आपणाकडे हा निरोप पाठवीत आहे.”‘

⁶And the messengers turn back unto Jacob, saying, `We came in unto thy brother, unto Esau, and he also is coming to meet thee, and four hundred men with him;`

⁶निरोपे याकोबाकडे मागे आले आणि म्हणाले, “आम्ही आपला भाऊ एसाव याजकडे गेलो व त्यांस भेटलो तो आपणाला भेटावयास येत आहे; त्याच्या बरोबर चारशे माणसे आहेत.”

⁷and Jacob feareth exceedingly, and is distressed, and he divideth the people who [are] with him, and the flock, and the herd, and the camels, into two camps,

⁷त्या निरोपामुळे याकोब घाबरला. आपल्या जवळच्या लोकांच्या त्याने दोन टोळ्या केल्या. तसेच शेरडेमेंढरे, गुरेढोरे आणि उंट गाढवे यांच्याही त्याने दोन टोळ्या केल्या.

⁸and saith, `If Esau come in unto the one camp, and have smitten it — then the camp which is left hath been for an escape.`

⁸त्याने विचार केला, “जर एसाव आला व त्याने एका टोळीचा नाश केला तर दुसरी टोळी पळून जाईल व वाचवली जाईल.”

⁹And Jacob saith, `God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Jehovah who saith unto me, Turn back to thy land, and to thy kindred, and I do good with thee:

⁹याकोब म्हणाला, “माझे वडील अब्राहाम, इसहाक यांच्या देवा! परमेश्वरा! तू मला माझ्या देशात व माझ्या कुटुंबात परत येण्यास सांगितलेस; तसेच तू माझे कल्याण करशील असेही तू म्हणालास.

¹⁰I have been unworthy of all the kind acts, and of all the truth which Thou hast done with thy servant — for, with my staff I passed over this Jordan, and now I have become two camps.

¹⁰तू माझ्यावर दया केली आहेस आणि माझ्या करिता अनेक चांगल्या गोष्टी केल्या आहेस हे मी जाणतो. मी पहिल्याच वेळी यार्देन नदी उतरुन प्रवास केला तेव्हा माझ्याजवळ एका काठी शिवाय माझ्या मालकीचे काहीही नव्हते; परंतु आता माझ्या मालकीच्या, भरपूर वस्तूंच्या व माणसांच्या पूर्ण दोन टोळ्या आहेत.

¹¹`Deliver me, I pray Thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I am fearing him, less he come and have smitten me — mother beside sons;

¹¹मी तुझी प्रार्थना करतो की कृपाकरुन तू माझा भाऊ एसाव याच्यापासून मला वाचव; मला त्याची भीती वाटते, की तो येऊन आम्हा सर्वांस ठार मारील; मुलांच्या मातांनाही लेंकरासकट तो मारुन टाकील.

¹²and Thou — Thou hast said, I certainly do good with thee, and have set thy seed as the sand of the sea, which is not numbered because of the multitude.`

¹²परमेश्वरा! तू मला वचन दिलेस, ‘मी तुझे भले करीन; मी तुझी संतनी वाढवीन आणि ती समुद्राच्या वाळू इतकी करीन; त्याची गणती करता येणार नाही एवढी ती करीन.”

¹³And he lodgeth there during that night, and taketh from that which is coming into his hand, a present for Esau his brother:

¹³त्या रात्री याकोब त्या ठिकाणी राहिला. त्याने एसावाला देणगी म्हणून देण्यासाठी काही गोष्टींची भेट तयार केली.

¹⁴she-goats two hundred, and he-goats twenty, ewes two hundred, and rams twenty,

¹⁴त्याने दोनशे शेळ्या व वीस बोकड, दोनशें मेंढ्या व वीस एडके,

¹⁵suckling camels and their young ones thirty, cows forty, and bullocks ten, she-asses twenty, and foals ten;

¹⁵तसेच तीस साडणी व त्यांची बछडी, चाळीस गाई व दहा खोंड, वीस गाढवी व दहा गाढवे घेतली व एवढ्यांचे वेगवेगळे कळप केले.

¹⁶and he giveth into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and saith unto his servants, `Pass over before me, and a space ye do put between drove and drove.`

¹⁶त्याने प्रत्येक कळप एकेका नोकराच्या ताब्यात दिला; मग तो नोकरांना म्हणाला, “प्रत्येक कळप वेगळा करा आणि कळपाकळपात थोडे अंतर ठेवून माझ्यापुढे चाला.”

¹⁷And he commandeth the first, saying, `When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and hath asked thee, saying, Whose [art] thou? and whither goest thou? and whose [are] these before thee?

¹⁷याकोबाने चाकरांना आज्ञा दिल्या; जनावरांच्या पहिल्याच टोळीच्या चाकराला तो म्हणाला, “जेव्हा माझा भाऊ एसाव तुझ्याकडे येईल व विचारील, ‘ही कोणाची जनावरे आहेत? तू कोठे चाललास? तू कोणाचा नोकर आहेस?’

¹⁸then thou hast said, Thy servant Jacob`s: it [is] a present sent to my lord, to Esau; and lo, he also [is] behind us.`

¹⁸तेव्हा तू त्याला असे उत्तर दे, ‘ही जनावरे आपला सेवक याकोब याच्या मालकीची आहेत. याकोबाने ही स्वामी आपल्याला भेट म्हणून पाठवली आहेत आणि याकोब आमच्या पाठोपाठ येत आहे.”

¹⁹And he commandeth also the second, also the third, also all who are going after the droves, saying, `According to this manner do ye speak unto Esau in your finding him,

¹⁹याकोबाने दुसऱ्या तिसऱ्या आणि इतर सर्व चाकरांना अशीच आज्ञा करुन अशाच प्रकारे उत्तर देण्यास सांगितले. तो म्हणाला, “तुम्हाला जेव्हा एसाव भेटेल तेव्हा तुम्ही असेच करावे.

²⁰and ye have said also, Lo, thy servant Jacob [is] behind us;` for he said, `I pacify his face with the present which is going before me, and afterwards I see his face; it may be he lifteth up my face;`

²⁰तुम्ही म्हणावे, ‘ही आपणाकरिता भेट आहे आणि आपला दास याकोब आमच्या मागून येत आहे.”‘ याकोबाने विचार केला, “जर मी ही माणसे भेटीसह पुढे पाठवली तर कदाचित एसाव मला क्षमा करील व माझा स्वीकार करील.”

²¹and the present passeth over before his face, and he hath lodged during that night in the camp.

²¹म्हणून त्याप्रमाणे याकोबाने भेट पुढे पाठवली परंतु तो त्या रात्री तळावरच मागे राहिला.

²²And he riseth in that night, and taketh his two wives, and his two maid-servants, and his eleven children, and passeth over the passage of Jabbok;

²²मग याकोब रात्रीचाच उठला. त्याने आपल्या दोन्ही बायका, दोन्ही दासी आणि अकरा मुले यांस बरोबर घेतले आणि तो यब्बोक नदीच्या उतारापाशी नदी पार करुन गेला.

²³and he taketh them, and causeth them to pass over the brook, and he causeth that which he hath to pass over.

²³त्याने आपल्या कुटुंबातील सर्वांस नदी पार करुन पाठवले; नंतर त्याचे जे काही होते तेही सर्व त्याने नदी प करुन पलीकडे पाठवले.

²⁴And Jacob is left alone, and one wrestleth with him till the ascending of the dawn;

²⁴नदी उतरुन पलीकडे जाण्यात याकोब सर्वात शेवटी होता; परंतु नदी उतरुन जाण्यापूर्वी तो अद्याप एकटाच असताना एक पुरुष आला व त्याने याकोबाशी झोंबी केली. सूर्य उगवेपर्यंत त्याने त्याच्याशी झोंबी केली

²⁵and he seeth that he is not able for him, and he cometh against the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob`s thigh is disjointed in his wrestling with him;

²⁵त्या माणसाने पाहिले की आपण याकोबावर मात करुन त्याचा पराभव करु शकत नाही म्हणून त्याने याकोबाच्या जांघेस स्पर्श केला तेव्हा याकोबाचा पाय जांघेच्या सांध्यातून निखळला.

²⁶and he saith, `Send me away, for the dawn hath ascended:` and he saith, `I send thee not away, except thou hast blessed me.`

²⁶मग तो पुरुष याकोबास म्हणाला, “आता मला ज परंतु याकोब म्हणाला, “तू मला आशीर्वाद दिलाच पाहिजेस नाहीतर मी तुला जाऊ देणार नाही.”

²⁷And he saith unto him, `What [is] thy name?` and he saith, `Jacob.`

²⁷तो पुरुष त्याला म्हणाला, “तुझे नाव काय आहे?” आणि याकोब म्हणाला, “माझे नाव याकोब आहे.”

²⁸And he saith, `Thy name is no more called Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast been a prince with God and with men, and dost prevail.`

²⁸तेव्हा तो पुरुष म्हणाला, “तुझे नाव याकोब असणार नाही. येथून पुढे तुझे नांव इस्राएल असेल. मी हे नांव तुला देत आहे कारण तू देवाशी व माणसांशी झोंबी केली आहेस आणि तू हरला नाहीस तर जिंकलास.”

²⁹And Jacob asketh, and saith, `Declare, I pray thee, thy name;` and he saith, `Why [is] this, thou askest for My name?` and He blesseth him there.

²⁹मग याकोबाने त्याला विचारले, “कृपया तुझे नाव मला सांग.” परंतु तो पुरुष म्हणाला, “तू माझे नाव का विचारतोस?” त्यावेळी तेथेच त्या पुरुषाने याकोबाला आशीर्वाद दिला.

³⁰And Jacob calleth the name of the place Peniel: for `I have seen God face unto face, and my life is delivered;`

³⁰म्हणून याकोबाने त्या जागेचे नाव पनीएल ठेवले. याकोब म्हणाला, “ह्या ठिकाणी मी देवाला तोंडोतोंड पाहिले आहे परंतु माझा जीव वाचवला गेला.”

³¹and the sun riseth on him when he hath passed over Penuel, and he is halting on his thigh;

³¹मग पनीएलाहून तो पुढे निघाला तेव्हा सूर्य उगवला. याकोब आपल्या पायामुळे लंगडत चालत होता.

³²therefore the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew which shrank, which [is] on the hollow of the thigh, unto this day, because He came against the hollow of Jacob`s thigh, against the sinew which shrank.

³²म्हणून आजपर्यंत इस्राएल लोक जनावरांच्या जांघेच्या सांध्याजवळचा स्नायू खात नाहीत कारण याच स्नायूपाशी याकोबाला दुखापत झाली होती.
