¹Then came David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest: and Ahimelech came to meet David trembling, and said unto him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?

²And David said unto Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know anything of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed the young men to such and such a place.

²Ja Taavet jõudis Noobi preester Ahimeleki juurde. Aga Ahimelek tuli värisedes Taavetile vastu ja küsis temalt: 'Mispärast sa oled üksi ega ole kedagi koos sinuga?'

³Now therefore what is under thy hand? give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or whatsoever there is present.

³Ja Taavet vastas preester Ahimelekile: 'Kuningas käskis mind asja pärast ja ütles mulle: Ärgu saagu ükski midagi teada sellest asjast, mille pärast ma sind läkitan ja mida ma olen sind käskinud teha! Seepärast ma juhatasin poisid ühte ja teise paika.

⁴And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under my hand, but there is holy bread; if only the young men have kept themselves from women.

⁴Anna nüüd mulle, mis sul käepärast on, viis leiba või muud, mis leidub!'

⁵And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days; when I came out, the vessels of the young men were holy, though it was but a common journey; how much more then to-day shall their vessels be holy?

⁵Aga preester kostis Taavetile ja ütles: 'Tavalist leiba pole mul käepärast, küll aga on pühitsetud leiba, kui ainult poisid oleksid naistest hoidunud!'

⁶So the priest gave him holy [bread]; for there was no bread there but the showbread, that was taken from before Jehovah, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.

⁶Taavet kostis preestrile ja ütles talle: 'Muidugi on naised meile keelatud olnud nagu varasematel retkedel; siis oli poiste ihu pühitsetud, kuigi oli tavaline teekond. Seda enam peaks olema täna pühitsetud, mis ihusse puutub.'

⁷Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before Jehovah; and his name was Doeg the Edomite, the chiefest of the herdsmen that belonged to Saul.

⁷Siis andis preester temale pühitsetut, sest seal ei olnud muud leiba kui ohvrileivad, mis võetakse Issanda eest ära, kui äravõtmise päeval värske leib asemele pannakse.

⁸And David said unto Ahimelech, And is there not here under thy hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king's business required haste.

⁸Aga seal oli sel päeval Issanda ees kinnipeetuna üks Sauli sulaseist, edomlane Doeg, Sauli karjaste ülem.

⁹And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou slewest in the vale of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: if thou wilt take that, take it; for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me.

⁹Ja Taavet ütles Ahimelekile: 'Kas sul on siin käepärast piiki või mõõka? Ma ei ole ju oma mõõka ega muid sõjariistu kaasa võtnud, sest kuninga käsk oli rutuline.'

¹⁰And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.

¹⁰Ja preester ütles: 'Vaata, vilist Koljati, kelle sa Tammeorus maha lõid, tema mõõk on siin riidesse mähituna õlarüü taga. Kui sa tahad selle enesele võtta, siis võta, sest muud siin ei ole kui see!' Ja Taavet ütles: 'Teist sellesarnast ei ole, anna see mulle!'

¹¹And the servants of Achish said unto him, Is not this David the king of the land? did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, Saul hath slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands?

¹¹Ja Taavet võttis kätte ja põgenes selsamal päeval Sauli eest ning tuli Gati kuninga Aakise juurde.

¹²And David laid up these words in his heart, and was sore afraid of Achish the king of Gath.

¹²Aga Aakisele ütlesid tema sulased: 'Eks see ole Taavet, maa kuningas? Eks see ole tema, kellest nad tantsides vastastikku laulsid ja ütlesid: 'Saul lõi maha oma tuhat, aga Taavet oma kümme tuhat!'?'

¹³And he changed his behavior before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard.

¹³Taavet võttis need sõnad südamesse ja kartis väga Gati kuningat Aakist.

¹⁴Then said Achish unto his servants, Lo, ye see the man is mad; wherefore then have ye brought him to me?

¹⁴Ta tegi ennast nende silmis rumalaks ja käitus hullumeelsena nende käes, tegi märke väravate peale ja laskis ila habemesse voolata.

¹⁵Do I lack madmen, that ye have brought this fellow to play the madman in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house?

¹⁵Siis ütles Aakis oma sulastele: 'Vaata, te näete, et mees on hull! Mispärast te toote ta minu juurde?

¹⁶Kas mul on puudus hulludest, et tõite selle minu juurde hullutempe tegema? Kas niisugune peaks tulema minu kotta?'
