¹And they continued three years without war between Syria and Israel.

¹וישבו שלש שנים אין מלחמה בין ארם ובין ישראל׃

²And it came to pass in the third year, that Jehoshaphat the king of Judah came down to the king of Israel.

²La troisième année, Josaphat, roi de Juda, descendit auprès du roi d'Israël.

²ויהי בשנה השלישית וירד יהושפט מלך יהודה אל מלך ישראל׃

³And the king of Israel said unto his servants, Know ye that Ramoth-gilead is ours, and we are still, and take it not out of the hand of the king of Syria?

³Le roi d'Israël dit à ses serviteurs: Savez-vous que Ramoth en Galaad est à nous? Et nous ne nous inquiétons pas de la reprendre des mains du roi de Syrie!

³ויאמר מלך ישראל אל עבדיו הידעתם כי לנו רמת גלעד ואנחנו מחשים מקחת אתה מיד מלך ארם׃

⁴And he said unto Jehoshaphat, Wilt thou go with me to battle to Ramoth-gilead? And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, I am as thou art, my people as thy people, my horses as thy horses.

⁴Et il dit à Josaphat: Veux-tu venir avec moi attaquer Ramoth en Galaad? Josaphat répondit au roi d'Israël: Nous irons, moi comme toi, mon peuple comme ton peuple, mes chevaux comme tes chevaux.

⁴ויאמר אל יהושפט התלך אתי למלחמה רמת גלעד ויאמר יהושפט אל מלך ישראל כמוני כמוך כעמי כעמך כסוסי כסוסיך׃

⁵And Jehoshaphat said unto the king of Israel, Inquire first, I pray thee, for the word of Jehovah.

⁵Puis Josaphat dit au roi d'Israël: Consulte maintenant, je te prie, la parole de l'Eternel.

⁵ויאמר יהושפט אל מלך ישראל דרש נא כיום את דבר יהוה׃

⁶Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, about four hundred men, and said unto them, Shall I go against Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall I forbear? And they said, Go up; for the Lord will deliver it into the hand of the king.

⁶Le roi d'Israël assembla les prophètes, au nombre d'environ quatre cents, et leur dit: Irai-je attaquer Ramoth en Galaad, ou dois-je y renoncer? Et ils répondirent: Monte, et le Seigneur la livrera entre les mains du roi.

⁶ויקבץ מלך ישראל את הנביאים כארבע מאות איש ויאמר אלהם האלך על רמת גלעד למלחמה אם אחדל ויאמרו עלה ויתן אדני ביד המלך׃

⁷But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of Jehovah besides, that we may inquire of him?

⁷Mais Josaphat dit: N'y a-t-il plus ici aucun prophète de l'Eternel, par qui nous puissions le consulter?

⁷ויאמר יהושפט האין פה נביא ליהוה עוד ונדרשה מאותו׃

⁸And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, there is yet one man by whom we may inquire of Jehovah, Micaiah the son of Imlah: but I hate him; for he doth not prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.

⁸Le roi d'Israël répondit à Josaphat: Il y a encore un homme par qui l'on pourrait consulter l'Eternel; mais je le hais, car il ne me prophétise rien de bon, il ne prophétise que du mal: c'est Michée, fils de Jimla. Et Josaphat dit: Que le roi ne parle pas ainsi!

⁸ויאמר מלך ישראל אל יהושפט עוד איש אחד לדרש את יהוה מאתו ואני שנאתיו כי לא יתנבא עלי טוב כי אם רע מיכיהו בן ימלה ויאמר יהושפט אל יאמר המלך כן׃

⁹Then the king of Israel called an officer, and said, Fetch quickly Micaiah the son of Imlah.

⁹Alors le roi d'Israël appela un eunuque, et dit: Fais venir de suite Michée, fils de Jimla.

⁹ויקרא מלך ישראל אל סריס אחד ויאמר מהרה מיכיהו בן ימלה׃

¹⁰Now the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah were sitting each on his throne, arrayed in their robes, in an open place at the entrance of the gate of Samaria; and all the prophets were prophesying before them.

¹⁰Le roi d'Israël et Josaphat, roi de Juda, étaient assis chacun sur son trône, revêtus de leurs habits royaux, dans la place à l'entrée de la porte de Samarie. Et tous les prophètes prophétisaient devant eux.

¹⁰ומלך ישראל ויהושפט מלך יהודה ישבים איש על כסאו מלבשים בגדים בגרן פתח שער שמרון וכל הנביאים מתנבאים לפניהם׃

¹¹And Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made him horns of iron, and said, Thus saith Jehovah, With these shalt thou push the Syrians, until they be consumed.

¹¹Sédécias, fils de Kenaana, s'était fait des cornes de fer, et il dit: Ainsi parle l'Eternel: Avec ces cornes tu frapperas les Syriens jusqu'à les détruire.

¹¹ויעש לו צדקיה בן כנענה קרני ברזל ויאמר כה אמר יהוה באלה תנגח את ארם עד כלתם׃

¹²And all the prophets prophesied so, saying, Go up to Ramoth-gilead, and prosper; for Jehovah will deliver it into the hand of the king.

¹²Et tous les prophètes prophétisaient de même, en disant: Monte à Ramoth en Galaad! tu auras du succès, et l'Eternel la livrera entre les mains du roi.

¹²וכל הנבאים נבאים כן לאמר עלה רמת גלעד והצלח ונתן יהוה ביד המלך׃

¹³And the messenger that went to call Micaiah spake unto him, saying, Behold now, the words of the prophets [declare] good unto the king with one mouth: let thy word, I pray thee, be like the word of one of them, and speak thou good.

¹³Le messager qui était allé appeler Michée lui parla ainsi: Voici, les prophètes, d'un commun accord, prophétisent du bien au roi; que ta parole soit donc comme la parole de chacun d'eux! annonce du bien!

¹³והמלאך אשר הלך לקרא מיכיהו דבר אליו לאמר הנה נא דברי הנביאים פה אחד טוב אל המלך יהי נא דבריך כדבר אחד מהם ודברת טוב׃

¹⁴And Micaiah said, As Jehovah liveth, what Jehovah saith unto me, that will I speak.

¹⁴Michée répondit: L'Eternel est vivant! j'annoncerai ce que l'Eternel me dira.

¹⁴ויאמר מיכיהו חי יהוה כי את אשר יאמר יהוה אלי אתו אדבר׃

¹⁵And when he was come to the king, the king said unto him, Micaiah, shall we go to Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall we forbear? And he answered him, Go up and prosper; and Jehovah will deliver it into the hand of the king.

¹⁵Lorsqu'il fut arrivé auprès du roi, le roi lui dit: Michée, irons-nous attaquer Ramoth en Galaad, ou devons-nous y renoncer? Il lui répondit: Monte! tu auras du succès, et l'Eternel la livrera entre les mains du roi.

¹⁵ויבוא אל המלך ויאמר המלך אליו מיכיהו הנלך אל רמת גלעד למלחמה אם נחדל ויאמר אליו עלה והצלח ונתן יהוה ביד המלך׃

¹⁶And the king said unto him, How many times shall I adjure thee that thou speak unto me nothing but the truth in the name of Jehovah?

¹⁶Et le roi lui dit: Combien de fois me faudra-t-il te faire jurer de ne me dire que la vérité au nom de l'Eternel?

¹⁶ויאמר אליו המלך עד כמה פעמים אני משבעך אשר לא תדבר אלי רק אמת בשם יהוה׃

¹⁷And he said, I saw all Israel scattered upon the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd: and Jehovah said, These have no master; let them return every man to his house in peace.

¹⁷Michée répondit: Je vois tout Israël dispersé sur les montagnes, comme des brebis qui n'ont point de berger; et l'Eternel dit: Ces gens n'ont point de maître, que chacun retourne en paix dans sa maison!

¹⁷ויאמר ראיתי את כל ישראל נפצים אל ההרים כצאן אשר אין להם רעה ויאמר יהוה לא אדנים לאלה ישובו איש לביתו בשלום׃

¹⁸And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, Did I not tell thee that he would not prophesy good concerning me, but evil?

¹⁸Le roi d'Israël dit à Josaphat: Ne te l'ai-je pas dit? Il ne prophétise sur moi rien de bon, il ne prophétise que du mal.

¹⁸ויאמר מלך ישראל אל יהושפט הלוא אמרתי אליך לוא יתנבא עלי טוב כי אם רע׃

¹⁹And [Micaiah] said, Therefore hear thou the word of Jehovah: I saw Jehovah sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left.

¹⁹Et Michée dit: Ecoute donc la parole de l'Eternel! J'ai vu l'Eternel assis sur son trône, et toute l'armée des cieux se tenant auprès de lui, à sa droite et à sa gauche.

¹⁹ויאמר לכן שמע דבר יהוה ראיתי את יהוה ישב על כסאו וכל צבא השמים עמד עליו מימינו ומשמאלו׃

²⁰And Jehovah said, Who shall entice Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead? And one said on this manner; and another said on that manner.

²⁰Et l'Eternel dit: Qui séduira Achab, pour qu'il monte à Ramoth en Galaad et qu'il y périsse? Ils répondirent l'un d'une manière, l'autre d'une autre.

²⁰ויאמר יהוה מי יפתה את אחאב ויעל ויפל ברמת גלעד ויאמר זה בכה וזה אמר בכה׃

²¹And there came forth a spirit, and stood before Jehovah, and said, I will entice him.

²¹Et un esprit vint se présenter devant l'Eternel, et dit: Moi, je le séduirai.

²¹ויצא הרוח ויעמד לפני יהוה ויאמר אני אפתנו ויאמר יהוה אליו במה׃

²²And Jehovah said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt entice him, and shalt prevail also: go forth, and do so.

²²L'Eternel lui dit: Comment? Je sortirai, répondit-il, et je serai un esprit de mensonge dans la bouche de tous ses prophètes. L'Eternel dit: Tu le séduiras, et tu en viendras à bout; sors, et fais ainsi!

²²ויאמר אצא והייתי רוח שקר בפי כל נביאיו ויאמר תפתה וגם תוכל צא ועשה כן׃

²³Now therefore, behold, Jehovah hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets; and Jehovah hath spoken evil concerning thee.

²³Et maintenant, voici, l'Eternel a mis un esprit de mensonge dans la bouche de tous tes prophètes qui sont là. Et l'Eternel a prononcé du mal contre toi.

²³ועתה הנה נתן יהוה רוח שקר בפי כל נביאיך אלה ויהוה דבר עליך רעה׃

²⁴Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near, and smote Micaiah on the cheek, and said, Which way went the Spirit of Jehovah from me to speak unto thee?

²⁴Alors Sédécias, fils de Kenaana, s'étant approché, frappa Michée sur la joue, et dit: Par où l'esprit de l'Eternel est-il sorti de moi pour te parler?

²⁴ויגש צדקיהו בן כנענה ויכה את מיכיהו על הלחי ויאמר אי זה עבר רוח יהוה מאתי לדבר אותך׃

²⁵And Micaiah said, Behold, thou shalt see on that day, when thou shalt go into an inner chamber to hide thyself.

²⁵Michée répondit: Tu le verras au jour où tu iras de chambre en chambre pour te cacher.

²⁵ויאמר מיכיהו הנך ראה ביום ההוא אשר תבא חדר בחדר להחבה׃

²⁶And the king of Israel said, Take Micaiah, and carry him back unto Amon the governor of the city, and to Joash the king's son;

²⁶Le roi d'Israël dit: Prends Michée, et emmène-le vers Amon, chef de la ville, et vers Joas, fils du roi.

²⁶ויאמר מלך ישראל קח את מיכיהו והשיבהו אל אמן שר העיר ואל יואש בן המלך׃

²⁷and say, Thus saith the king, Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction, until I come in peace.

²⁷Tu diras: Ainsi parle le roi: Mettez cet homme en prison, et nourrissez-le du pain et de l'eau d'affliction, jusqu'à ce que je revienne en paix.

²⁷ואמרת כה אמר המלך שימו את זה בית הכלא והאכילהו לחם לחץ ומים לחץ עד באי בשלום׃

²⁸And Micaiah said, If thou return at all in peace, Jehovah hath not spoken by me. And he said, Hear, ye peoples, all of you.

²⁸Et Michée dit: Si tu reviens en paix, l'Eternel n'a point parlé par moi. Il dit encore: Vous tous, peuples, entendez!

²⁸ויאמר מיכיהו אם שוב תשוב בשלום לא דבר יהוה בי ויאמר שמעו עמים כלם׃

²⁹So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to Ramoth-gilead.

²⁹Le roi d'Israël et Josaphat, roi de Juda, montèrent à Ramoth en Galaad.

²⁹ויעל מלך ישראל ויהושפט מלך יהודה רמת גלעד׃

³⁰And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, I will disguise myself, and go into the battle; but put thou on thy robes. And the king of Israel disguised himself, and went into the battle.

³⁰Le roi d'Israël dit à Josaphat: Je veux me déguiser pour aller au combat; mais toi, revêts-toi de tes habits. Et le roi d'Israël se déguisa, et alla au combat.

³⁰ויאמר מלך ישראל אל יהושפט התחפש ובא במלחמה ואתה לבש בגדיך ויתחפש מלך ישראל ויבוא במלחמה׃

³¹Now the king of Syria had commanded the thirty and two captains of his chariots, saying, Fight neither with small nor great, save only with the king of Israel.

³¹Le roi de Syrie avait donné cet ordre aux trente-deux chefs de ses chars: Vous n'attaquerez ni petits ni grands, mais vous attaquerez seulement le roi d'Israël.

³¹ומלך ארם צוה את שרי הרכב אשר לו שלשים ושנים לאמר לא תלחמו את קטן ואת גדול כי אם את מלך ישראל לבדו׃

³²And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, that they said, Surely it is the king of Israel; and they turned aside to fight against him: and Jehoshaphat cried out.

³²Quand les chefs des chars aperçurent Josaphat, ils dirent: Certainement, c'est le roi d'Israël. Et ils s'approchèrent de lui pour l'attaquer. Josaphat poussa un cri.

³²ויהי כראות שרי הרכב את יהושפט והמה אמרו אך מלך ישראל הוא ויסרו עליו להלחם ויזעק יהושפט׃

³³And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw that it was not the king of Israel, that they turned back from pursuing him.

³³Les chefs des chars, voyant que ce n'était pas le roi d'Israël, s'éloignèrent de lui.

³³ויהי כראות שרי הרכב כי לא מלך ישראל הוא וישובו מאחריו׃

³⁴And a certain man drew his bow at a venture, and smote the king of Israel between the joints of the armor: wherefore he said unto the driver of his chariot, Turn thy hand, and carry me out of the host; for I am sore wounded.

³⁴Alors un homme tira de son arc au hasard, et frappa le roi d'Israël au défaut de la cuirasse. Le roi dit à celui qui dirigeait son char: Tourne, et fais-moi sortir du champ de bataille, car je suis blessé.

³⁴ואיש משך בקשת לתמו ויכה את מלך ישראל בין הדבקים ובין השרין ויאמר לרכבו הפך ידך והוציאני מן המחנה כי החליתי׃

³⁵And the battle increased that day: and the king was stayed up in his chariot against the Syrians, and died at even; and the blood ran out of the wound into the bottom of the chariot.

³⁵Le combat devint acharné ce jour-là. Le roi fut retenu dans son char en face des Syriens, et il mourut le soir. Le sang de la blessure coula dans l'intérieur du char.

³⁵ותעלה המלחמה ביום ההוא והמלך היה מעמד במרכבה נכח ארם וימת בערב ויצק דם המכה אל חיק הרכב׃

³⁶And there went a cry throughout the host about the going down of the sun, saying, Every man to his city, and every man to his country.

³⁶Au coucher du soleil, on cria par tout le camp: Chacun à sa ville et chacun dans son pays!

³⁶ויעבר הרנה במחנה כבא השמש לאמר איש אל עירו ואיש אל ארצו׃

³⁷So the king died, and was brought to Samaria; and they buried the king in Samaria.

³⁷Ainsi mourut le roi, qui fut ramené à Samarie; et on enterra le roi à Samarie.

³⁷וימת המלך ויבוא שמרון ויקברו את המלך בשמרון׃

³⁸And they washed the chariot by the pool of Samaria; and the dogs licked up his blood (now the harlots washed themselves [there]); according unto the word of Jehovah which he spake.

³⁸Lorsqu'on lava le char à l'étang de Samarie, les chiens léchèrent le sang d'Achab, et les prostituées s'y baignèrent, selon la parole que l'Eternel avait prononcée.

³⁸וישטף את הרכב על ברכת שמרון וילקו הכלבים את דמו והזנות רחצו כדבר יהוה אשר דבר׃

³⁹Now the rest of the acts of Ahab, and all that he did, and the ivory house which he built, and all the cities that he built, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

³⁹Le reste des actions d'Achab, tout ce qu'il a fait, la maison d'ivoire qu'il construisit, et toutes les villes qu'il a bâties, cela n'est-il pas écrit dans le livre des Chroniques des rois d'Israël?

³⁹ויתר דברי אחאב וכל אשר עשה ובית השן אשר בנה וכל הערים אשר בנה הלוא הם כתובים על ספר דברי הימים למלכי ישראל׃

⁴⁰So Ahab slept with his fathers; and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead.

⁴⁰Achab se coucha avec ses pères. Et Achazia, son fils, régna à sa place.

⁴⁰וישכב אחאב עם אבתיו וימלך אחזיהו בנו תחתיו׃

⁴¹And Jehoshaphat the son of Asa began to reign over Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel.

⁴¹Josaphat, fils d'Asa, régna sur Juda, la quatrième année d'Achab, roi d'Israël.

⁴¹ויהושפט בן אסא מלך על יהודה בשנת ארבע לאחאב מלך ישראל׃

⁴²Jehoshaphat was thirty and five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi.

⁴²Josaphat avait trente-cinq ans lorsqu'il devint roi, et il régna vingt cinq ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s'appelait Azuba, fille de Schilchi.

⁴²יהושפט בן שלשים וחמש שנה במלכו ועשרים וחמש שנה מלך בירושלם ושם אמו עזובה בת שלחי׃

⁴³And he walked in all the way of Asa his father; He turned not aside from it, doing that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah: howbeit the high places were not taken away; the people still sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.

⁴³Il marcha dans toute la voie d'Asa, son père, et ne s'en détourna point, faisant ce qui est droit aux yeux de l'Eternel. Seulement, les hauts lieux ne disparurent point; le peuple offrait encore des sacrifices et des parfums sur les hauts lieux.

⁴³וילך בכל דרך אסא אביו לא סר ממנו לעשות הישר בעיני יהוה אך הבמות לא סרו עוד העם מזבחים ומקטרים בבמות׃

⁴⁴And Jehoshaphat made peace with the king of Israel.

⁴⁴Josaphat fut en paix avec le roi d'Israël.

⁴⁴וישלם יהושפט עם מלך ישראל׃

⁴⁵Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, and his might that he showed, and how he warred, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

⁴⁵Le reste des actions de Josaphat, ses exploits et ses guerres, cela n'est-il pas écrit dans le livre des Chroniques des rois de Juda?

⁴⁵ויתר דברי יהושפט וגבורתו אשר עשה ואשר נלחם הלא הם כתובים על ספר דברי הימים למלכי יהודה׃

⁴⁶And the remnant of the sodomites, that remained in the days of his father Asa, he put away out of the land.

⁴⁶Il ôta du pays le reste des prostitués, qui s'y trouvaient encore depuis le temps d'Asa, son père.

⁴⁶ויתר הקדש אשר נשאר בימי אסא אביו בער מן הארץ׃

⁴⁷And there was no king in Edom: a deputy was king.

⁴⁷Il n'y avait point de roi en Edom: c'était un intendant qui gouvernait.

⁴⁷ומלך אין באדום נצב מלך׃

⁴⁸Jehoshaphat made ships of Tarshish to go to Ophir for gold: but they went not; for the ships were broken at Ezion-geber.

⁴⁸Josaphat construisit des navires de Tarsis pour aller à Ophir chercher de l'or; mais il n'y alla point, parce que les navires se brisèrent à Etsjon-Guéber.

⁴⁸יהושפט עשר אניות תרשיש ללכת אופירה לזהב ולא הלך כי נשברה אניות בעציון גבר׃

⁴⁹Then said Ahaziah the son of Ahab unto Jehoshaphat, Let my servants go with thy servants in the ships. But Jehoshaphat would not.

⁴⁹Alors Achazia, fils d'Achab, dit à Josaphat: Veux-tu que mes serviteurs aillent avec les tiens sur des navires? Et Josaphat ne voulut pas.

⁴⁹אז אמר אחזיהו בן אחאב אל יהושפט ילכו עבדי עם עבדיך באניות ולא אבה יהושפט׃

⁵⁰And Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father; And Jehoram his son reigned in his stead.

⁵⁰Josaphat se coucha avec ses pères, et il fut enterré avec ses pères dans la ville de David, son père. Et Joram, son fils, régna à sa place.

⁵⁰וישכב יהושפט עם אבתיו ויקבר עם אבתיו בעיר דוד אביו וימלך יהורם בנו תחתיו׃

⁵¹Ahaziah the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria in the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned two years over Israel.

⁵¹Achazia, fils d'Achab, régna sur Israël à Samarie, la dix-septième année de Josaphat, roi de Juda. Il régna deux ans sur Israël.

⁵¹אחזיהו בן אחאב מלך על ישראל בשמרון בשנת שבע עשרה ליהושפט מלך יהודה וימלך על ישראל שנתים׃

⁵²And he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and walked in the way of his father, and in the way of his mother, and in the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, wherein he made Israel to sin.

⁵²Il fit ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Eternel, et il marcha dans la voie de son père et dans la voie de sa mère, et dans la voie de Jéroboam, fils de Nebath, qui avait fait pécher Israël.

⁵²ויעש הרע בעיני יהוה וילך בדרך אביו ובדרך אמו ובדרך ירבעם בן נבט אשר החטיא את ישראל׃

⁵³And he served Baal, and worshipped him, and provoked to anger Jehovah, the God of Israel, according to all that his father had done.

⁵³Il servit Baal et se prosterna devant lui, et il irrita l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, comme avait fait son père.

⁵³ויעבד את הבעל וישתחוה לו ויכעס את יהוה אלהי ישראל ככל אשר עשה אביו׃
