1And Jehovah said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from being king over Israel? fill thy horn with oil, and go: I will send thee to Jesse the Beth-lehemite; for I have provided me a king among his sons.
1L'Eternel dit à Samuel: Quand cesseras-tu de pleurer sur Saül? Je l'ai rejeté, afin qu'il ne règne plus sur Israël. Remplis ta corne d'huile, et va; je t'enverrai chez Isaï, Bethléhémite, car j'ai vu parmi ses fils celui que je désire pour roi.
1ויאמר יהוה אל שמואל עד מתי אתה מתאבל אל שאול ואני מאסתיו ממלך על ישראל מלא קרנך שמן ולך אשלחך אל ישי בית הלחמי כי ראיתי בבניו לי מלך׃
2And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And Jehovah said, Take a heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to Jehovah.
2Samuel dit: Comment irai-je? Saül l'apprendra, et il me tuera. Et l'Eternel dit: Tu emmèneras avec toi une génisse, et tu diras: Je viens pour offrir un sacrifice à l'Eternel.
2ויאמר שמואל איך אלך ושמע שאול והרגני ויאמר יהוה עגלת בקר תקח בידך ואמרת לזבח ליהוה באתי׃
3And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
3Tu inviteras Isaï au sacrifice; je te ferai connaître ce que tu dois faire, et tu oindras pour moi celui que je te dirai.
3וקראת לישי בזבח ואנכי אודיעך את אשר תעשה ומשחת לי את אשר אמר אליך׃
4And Samuel did that which Jehovah spake, and came to Beth-lehem. And the elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, Comest thou peaceably?
4Samuel fit ce que l'Eternel avait dit, et il alla à Bethléhem. Les anciens de la ville accoururent effrayés au-devant de lui et dirent: Ton arrivée annonce-t-elle quelque chose d'heureux?
4ויעש שמואל את אשר דבר יהוה ויבא בית לחם ויחרדו זקני העיר לקראתו ויאמר שלם בואך׃
5And he said, Peaceably; I am come to sacrifice unto Jehovah: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
5Il répondit: Oui; je viens pour offrir un sacrifice à l'Eternel. Sanctifiez-vous, et venez avec moi au sacrifice. Il fit aussi sanctifier Isaï et ses fils, et il les invita au sacrifice.
5ויאמר שלום לזבח ליהוה באתי התקדשו ובאתם אתי בזבח ויקדש את ישי ואת בניו ויקרא להם לזבח׃
6And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely Jehovah's anointed is before him.
6Lorsqu'ils entrèrent, il se dit, en voyant Eliab: Certainement, l'oint de l'Eternel est ici devant lui.
6ויהי בבואם וירא את אליאב ויאמר אך נגד יהוה משיחו׃
7But Jehovah said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him: for [Jehovah seeth] not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but Jehovah looketh on the heart.
7Et l'Eternel dit à Samuel: Ne prends point garde à son apparence et à la hauteur de sa taille, car je l'ai rejeté. L'Eternel ne considère pas ce que l'homme considère; l'homme regarde à ce qui frappe les yeux, mais l'Eternel regarde au coeur.
7ויאמר יהוה אל שמואל אל תבט אל מראהו ואל גבה קומתו כי מאסתיהו כי לא אשר יראה האדם כי האדם יראה לעינים ויהוה יראה ללבב׃
8Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath Jehovah chosen this.
8Isaï appela Abinadab, et le fit passer devant Samuel; et Samuel dit: L'Eternel n'a pas non plus choisi celui-ci.
8ויקרא ישי אל אבינדב ויעברהו לפני שמואל ויאמר גם בזה לא בחר יהוה׃
9Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath Jehovah chosen this.
9Isaï fit passer Schamma; et Samuel dit: L'Eternel n'a pas non plus choisi celui-ci.
9ויעבר ישי שמה ויאמר גם בזה לא בחר יהוה׃
10And Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Jehovah hath not chosen these.
10Isaï fit passer ses sept fils devant Samuel; et Samuel dit à Isaï: L'Eternel n'a choisi aucun d'eux.
10ויעבר ישי שבעת בניו לפני שמואל ויאמר שמואל אל ישי לא בחר יהוה באלה׃
11And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he is keeping the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him; for we will not sit down till he come hither.
11Puis Samuel dit à Isaï: Sont-ce là tous tes fils? Et il répondit: Il reste encore le plus jeune, mais il fait paître les brebis. Alors Samuel dit à Isaï: Envoie-le chercher, car nous ne nous placerons pas avant qu'il ne soit venu ici.
11ויאמר שמואל אל ישי התמו הנערים ויאמר עוד שאר הקטן והנה רעה בצאן ויאמר שמואל אל ישי שלחה וקחנו כי לא נסב עד באו פה׃
12And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look upon. And Jehovah said, Arise, anoint him; for this is he.
12Isaï l'envoya chercher. Or il était blond, avec de beaux yeux et une belle figure. L'Eternel dit à Samuel: Lève-toi, oins-le, car c'est lui!
12וישלח ויביאהו והוא אדמוני עם יפה עינים וטוב ראי ויאמר יהוה קום משחהו כי זה הוא׃
13Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of Jehovah came mightily upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
13Samuel prit la corne d'huile, et l'oignit au milieu de ses frères. L'esprit de l'Eternel saisit David, à partir de ce jour et dans la suite. Samuel se leva, et s'en alla à Rama.
13ויקח שמואל את קרן השמן וימשח אתו בקרב אחיו ותצלח רוח יהוה אל דוד מהיום ההוא ומעלה ויקם שמואל וילך הרמתה׃
14Now the Spirit of Jehovah departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from Jehovah troubled him.
14L'esprit de l'Eternel se retira de Saül, qui fut agité par un mauvais esprit venant de l'Eternel.
14ורוח יהוה סרה מעם שאול ובעתתו רוח רעה מאת יהוה׃
15And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
15Les serviteurs de Saül lui dirent: Voici, un mauvais esprit de Dieu t'agite.
15ויאמרו עבדי שאול אליו הנה נא רוח אלהים רעה מבעתך׃
16Let our lord now command thy servants, that are before thee, to seek out a man who is a skilful player on the harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
16Que notre seigneur parle! Tes serviteurs sont devant toi. Ils chercheront un homme qui sache jouer de la harpe; et, quand le mauvais esprit de Dieu sera sur toi, il jouera de sa main, et tu seras soulagé.
16יאמר נא אדננו עבדיך לפניך יבקשו איש ידע מנגן בכנור והיה בהיות עליך רוח אלהים רעה ונגן בידו וטוב לך׃
17And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.
17Saül répondit à ses serviteurs: Trouvez-moi donc un homme qui joue bien, et amenez-le-moi.
17ויאמר שאול אל עבדיו ראו נא לי איש מיטיב לנגן והביאותם אלי׃
18Then answered one of the young men, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth-lehemite, that is skilful in playing, and a mighty man of valor, and a man of war, and prudent in speech, and a comely person; and Jehovah is with him.
18L'un des serviteurs prit la parole, et dit: Voici, j'ai vu un fils d'Isaï, Bethléhémite, qui sait jouer; c'est aussi un homme fort et vaillant, un guerrier, parlant bien et d'une belle figure, et l'Eternel est avec lui.
18ויען אחד מהנערים ויאמר הנה ראיתי בן לישי בית הלחמי ידע נגן וגבור חיל ואיש מלחמה ונבון דבר ואיש תאר ויהוה עמו׃
19Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, who is with the sheep.
19Saül envoya des messagers à Isaï, pour lui dire: Envoie-moi David, ton fils, qui est avec les brebis.
19וישלח שאול מלאכים אל ישי ויאמר שלחה אלי את דוד בנך אשר בצאן׃
20And Jesse took an ass [laden] with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.
20Isaï prit un âne, qu'il chargea de pain, d'une outre de vin et d'un chevreau, et il envoya ces choses à Saül par David, son fils.
20ויקח ישי חמור לחם ונאד יין וגדי עזים אחד וישלח ביד דוד בנו אל שאול׃
21And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armorbearer.
21David arriva auprès de Saül, et se présenta devant lui; il plut beaucoup à Saül, et il fut désigné pour porter ses armes.
21ויבא דוד אל שאול ויעמד לפניו ויאהבהו מאד ויהי לו נשא כלים׃
22And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favor in my sight.
22Saül fit dire à Isaï: Je te prie de laisser David à mon service, car il a trouvé grâce à mes yeux.
22וישלח שאול אל ישי לאמר יעמד נא דוד לפני כי מצא חן בעיני׃
23And it came to pass, when the [evil] spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took the harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
23Et lorsque l'esprit de Dieu était sur Saül, David prenait la harpe et jouait de sa main; Saül respirait alors plus à l'aise et se trouvait soulagé, et le mauvais esprit se retirait de lui.
23והיה בהיות רוח אלהים אל שאול ולקח דוד את הכנור ונגן בידו ורוח לשאול וטוב לו וסרה מעליו רוח הרעה׃
