¹And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.

¹Lorsque Saül fut revenu de la poursuite des Philistins, on vint lui dire: Voici, David est dans le désert d'En-Guédi.

¹ויהי כאשר שב שאול מאחרי פלשתים ויגדו לו לאמר הנה דוד במדבר עין גדי׃

²Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.

²Saül prit trois mille hommes d'élite sur tout Israël, et il alla chercher David et ses gens jusque sur les rochers des boucs sauvages.

²ויקח שאול שלשת אלפים איש בחור מכל ישראל וילך לבקש את דוד ואנשיו על פני צורי היעלים׃

³And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet. Now David and his men were abiding in the innermost parts of the cave.

³Il arriva à des parcs de brebis, qui étaient près du chemin; et là se trouvait une caverne, où il entra pour se couvrir les pieds. David et ses gens étaient au fond de la caverne.

³ויבא אל גדרות הצאן על הדרך ושם מערה ויבא שאול להסך את רגליו ודוד ואנשיו בירכתי המערה ישבים׃

⁴And the men of David said unto him, Behold, the day of which Jehovah said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thy hand, and thou shalt do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily.

⁴Les gens de David lui dirent: Voici le jour où l'Eternel te dit: Je livre ton ennemi entre tes mains; traite-le comme bon te semblera. David se leva, et coupa doucement le pan du manteau de Saül.

⁴ויאמרו אנשי דוד אליו הנה היום אשר אמר יהוה אליך הנה אנכי נתן את איביך בידך ועשית לו כאשר יטב בעיניך ויקם דוד ויכרת את כנף המעיל אשר לשאול בלט׃

⁵And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt.

⁵Après cela le coeur lui battit, parce qu'il avait coupé le pan du manteau de Saül.

⁵ויהי אחרי כן ויך לב דוד אתו על אשר כרת את כנף אשר לשאול׃

⁶And he said unto his men, Jehovah forbid that I should do this thing unto my lord, Jehovah's anointed, to put forth my hand against him, seeing he is Jehovah's anointed.

⁶Et il dit à ses gens: Que l'Eternel me garde de commettre contre mon seigneur, l'oint de l'Eternel, une action telle que de porter ma main sur lui! car il est l'oint de l'Eternel.

⁶ויאמר לאנשיו חלילה לי מיהוה אם אעשה את הדבר הזה לאדני למשיח יהוה לשלח ידי בו כי משיח יהוה הוא׃

⁷So David checked his men with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. And Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.

⁷Par ces paroles David arrêta ses gens, et les empêcha de se jeter sur Saül. Puis Saül se leva pour sortir de la caverne, et continua son chemin.

⁷וישסע דוד את אנשיו בדברים ולא נתנם לקום אל שאול ושאול קם מהמערה וילך בדרך׃

⁸David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth, and did obeisance.

⁸Après cela, David se leva et sortit de la caverne. Il se mit alors à crier après Saül: O roi, mon seigneur! Saül regarda derrière lui, et David s'inclina le visage contre terre et se prosterna.

⁸ויקם דוד אחרי כן ויצא מן המערה ויקרא אחרי שאול לאמר אדני המלך ויבט שאול אחריו ויקד דוד אפים ארצה וישתחו׃

⁹And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearkenest thou to men's words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?

⁹David dit à Saül: Pourquoi écoutes-tu les propos des gens qui disent: Voici, David cherche ton malheur?

⁹ויאמר דוד לשאול למה תשמע את דברי אדם לאמר הנה דוד מבקש רעתך׃

¹⁰Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that Jehovah had delivered thee to-day into my hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee; but [mine eye] spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth my hand against my lord; for he is Jehovah's anointed.

¹⁰Tu vois maintenant de tes propres yeux que l'Eternel t'avait livré aujourd'hui entre mes mains dans la caverne. On m'excitait à te tuer; mais je t'ai épargné, et j'ai dit: Je ne porterai pas la main sur mon seigneur, car il est l'oint de l'Eternel.

¹⁰הנה היום הזה ראו עיניך את אשר נתנך יהוה היום בידי במערה ואמר להרגך ותחס עליך ואמר לא אשלח ידי באדני כי משיח יהוה הוא׃

¹¹Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand; for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against thee, though thou huntest after my life to take it.

¹¹Vois, mon père, vois donc le pan de ton manteau dans ma main. Puisque j'ai coupé le pan de ton manteau et que je ne t'ai pas tué, sache et reconnais qu'il n'y a dans ma conduite ni méchanceté ni révolte, et que je n'ai point péché contre toi. Et toi, tu me dresses des embûches, pour m'ôter la vie!

¹¹ואבי ראה גם ראה את כנף מעילך בידי כי בכרתי את כנף מעילך ולא הרגתיך דע וראה כי אין בידי רעה ופשע ולא חטאתי לך ואתה צדה את נפשי לקחתה׃

¹²Jehovah judge between me and thee, and Jehovah avenge me of thee; but my hand shall not be upon thee.

¹²L'Eternel sera juge entre moi et toi, et l'Eternel me vengera de toi; mais je ne porterai point la main sur toi.

¹²ישפט יהוה ביני ובינך ונקמני יהוה ממך וידי לא תהיה בך׃

¹³As saith the proverb of the ancients, Out of the wicked cometh forth wickedness; but my hand shall not be upon thee.

¹³Des méchants vient la méchanceté, dit l'ancien proverbe. Aussi je ne porterai point la main sur toi.

¹³כאשר יאמר משל הקדמני מרשעים יצא רשע וידי לא תהיה בך׃

¹⁴After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea.

¹⁴Contre qui le roi d'Israël s'est-il mis en marche? Qui poursuis-tu? Un chien mort, une puce!

¹⁴אחרי מי יצא מלך ישראל אחרי מי אתה רדף אחרי כלב מת אחרי פרעש אחד׃

¹⁵Jehovah therefore be judge, and give sentence between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thy hand.

¹⁵L'Eternel jugera et prononcera entre moi et toi; il regardera, il défendra ma cause, il me rendra justice en me délivrant de ta main.

¹⁵והיה יהוה לדין ושפט ביני ובינך וירא וירב את ריבי וישפטני מידך׃

¹⁶And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.

¹⁶Lorsque David eut fini d'adresser à Saül ces paroles, Saül dit: Est-ce bien ta voix, mon fils David? Et Saül éleva la voix et pleura.

¹⁶ויהי ככלות דוד לדבר את הדברים האלה אל שאול ויאמר שאול הקלך זה בני דוד וישא שאול קלו ויבך׃

¹⁷And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I; for thou hast rendered unto me good, whereas I have rendered unto thee evil.

¹⁷Et il dit à David: Tu es plus juste que moi; car tu m'as fait du bien, et moi je t'ai fait du mal.

¹⁷ויאמר אל דוד צדיק אתה ממני כי אתה גמלתני הטובה ואני גמלתיך הרעה׃

¹⁸And thou hast declared this day how that thou hast dealt well with me, forasmuch as when Jehovah had delivered me up into thy hand, thou killedst me not.

¹⁸Tu manifestes aujourd'hui la bonté avec laquelle tu agis envers moi, puisque l'Eternel m'avait livré entre tes mains et que tu ne m'as pas tué.

¹⁸ואת הגדת היום את אשר עשיתה אתי טובה את אשר סגרני יהוה בידך ולא הרגתני׃

¹⁹For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore Jehovah reward thee good for that which thou hast done unto me this day.

¹⁹Si quelqu'un rencontre son ennemi, le laisse-t-il poursuivre tranquillement son chemin? Que l'Eternel te récompense pour ce que tu m'as fait en ce jour!

¹⁹וכי ימצא איש את איבו ושלחו בדרך טובה ויהוה ישלמך טובה תחת היום הזה אשר עשיתה לי׃

²⁰And now, behold, I know that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thy hand.

²⁰Maintenant voici, je sais que tu régneras, et que la royauté d'Israël restera entre tes mains.

²⁰ועתה הנה ידעתי כי מלך תמלוך וקמה בידך ממלכת ישראל׃

²¹Swear now therefore unto me by Jehovah, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father's house.

²¹Jure-moi donc par l'Eternel que tu ne détruiras pas ma postérité après moi, et que tu ne retrancheras pas mon nom de la maison de mon père.

²¹ועתה השבעה לי ביהוה אם תכרית את זרעי אחרי ואם תשמיד את שמי מבית אבי׃

²²And David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men gat them up unto the stronghold.

²²David le jura à Saül. Puis Saül s'en alla dans sa maison, et David et ses gens montèrent au lieu fort.

²²וישבע דוד לשאול וילך שאול אל ביתו ודוד ואנשיו עלו על המצודה׃
