¹Moreover, brethren, we make known to you the grace of God which hath been given in the churches of Macedonia;

¹Nous vous faisons connaître, frères, la grâce de Dieu qui s'est manifestée dans les Eglises de la Macédoine.

¹והננו מודיעים אתכם אחי את חסד אלהים הנתן בקהלות מקדוניא׃

²how that in much proof of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality.

²Au milieu de beaucoup de tribulations qui les ont éprouvées, leur joie débordante et leur pauvreté profonde ont produit avec abondance de riches libéralités de leur part.

²כי ברב נסיון הלחץ רבתה שמחתם ושפלות רישם העדיפה להראות עשר תמתם׃

³For according to their power, I bear witness, yea and beyond their power, [they gave] of their own accord,

³Ils ont, je l'atteste, donné volontairement selon leurs moyens, et même au delà de leurs moyens,

³כי מעיד אנכי אשר לפי כחם ויותר מכחם התנדבו׃

⁴beseeching us with much entreaty in regard of this grace and the fellowship in the ministering to the saints:

⁴nous demandant avec de grandes instances la grâce de prendre part à l'assistance destinée aux saints.

⁴ויבקשו ממנו ברב תחנונים להיות חברינו בגמילות חסדם לעזרת הקדשים׃

⁵and [this], not as we had hoped, but first they gave their own selves to the Lord, and to us through the will of God.

⁵Et non seulement ils ont contribué comme nous l'espérions, mais ils se sont d'abord donnés eux-mêmes au Seigneur, puis à nous, par la volonté de Dieu.

⁵ולא כאשר הוחלנו כי אם את עצמם נתנו בראשונה לאדון וגם לנו ברצון האלהים׃

⁶Insomuch that we exhorted Titus, that as he made a beginning before, so he would also complete in you this grace also.

⁶Nous avons donc engagé Tite à achever chez vous cette oeuvre de bienfaisance, comme il l'avait commencée.

⁶עד כי בקשנו מן טיטוס כאשר החל כן גם לגמור בכם את גמילות החסד הזאת׃

⁷But as ye abound in everything, [in] faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and [in] all earnestness, and [in] your love to us, [see] that ye abound in this grace also.

⁷De même que vous excellez en toutes choses, en foi, en parole, en connaissance, en zèle à tous égards, et dans votre amour pour nous, faites en sorte d'exceller aussi dans cette oeuvre de bienfaisance.

⁷אבל כאשר הותרתם בכל באמונה ובדבור ובדעת ובכל זריזות ובאהבתכם אתנו כן גם תותירו בחסד הזה׃

⁸I speak not by way of commandment, but as proving through the earnestness of others the sincerity also of your love.

⁸Je ne dis pas cela pour donner un ordre, mais pour éprouver, par le zèle des autres, la sincérité de votre charité.

⁸ואינני אמר זאת בדרך צווי כי אם לבחן על ידי זריזות אחרים גם את אמתת אהבתכם׃

⁹For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might become rich.

⁹Car vous connaissez la grâce de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ, qui pour vous s'est fait pauvre, de riche qu'il était, afin que par sa pauvreté vous fussiez enrichis.

⁹כי ידעים אתם את חסד אדנינו ישוע המשיח כי בהיותו עשיר נעשה רש בעבורכם למען תעשירו על ידי רישו׃

¹⁰And herein I give [my] judgment: for this is expedient for you, who were the first to make a beginning a year ago, not only to do, but also to will.

¹⁰C'est un avis que je donne là-dessus, car cela vous convient, à vous qui non seulement avez commencé à agir, mais qui en avez eu la volonté dès l'année dernière.

¹⁰ואחוה את דעתי בדבר הזה כי זאת להועיל לכם אשר הקדמתם כבר בשנה שעברה לא לעשות בלבד כי גם לחפץ׃

¹¹But now complete the doing also; that as [there was] the readiness to will, so [there may be] the completion also out of your ability.

¹¹Achevez donc maintenant d'agir, afin que l'accomplissement selon vos moyens réponde à l'empressement que vous avez mis à vouloir.

¹¹ועתה גם השלימו את המעשה למען כאשר התנדבתם לעשות כן גם תגמרו כפי יכלתכם׃

¹²For if the readiness is there, [it is] acceptable according as [a man] hath, not according as [he] hath not.

¹²La bonne volonté, quand elle existe, est agréable en raison de ce qu'elle peut avoir à sa disposition, et non de ce qu'elle n'a pas.

¹²כי בהמצא לאיש רוח נדיבה רצויה היא לפי מה שיש לו ולא לפי מה שאין לו׃

¹³For [I say] not [this] that others may be eased [and] ye distressed;

¹³Car il s'agit, non de vous exposer à la détresse pour soulager les autres,

¹³כי לא למען תהיה רוחה לאחרים ולכם צוקה כי אם בשווי ימלא יתרכם בעת הזאת את מחסורם׃

¹⁴but by equality: your abundance [being a supply] at this present time for their want, that their abundance also may become [a supply] for your want; that there may be equality:

¹⁴mais de suivre une règle d'égalité: dans la circonstance présente votre superflu pourvoira à leurs besoins, afin que leur superflu pourvoie pareillement aux vôtres, en sorte qu'il y ait égalité,

¹⁴למען גם יתרם יהיה למלא מחסרכם כדי להשות׃

¹⁵as it is written, He that [gathered] much had nothing over; and he that [gathered] little had no lack.

¹⁵selon qu'il est écrit: Celui qui avait ramassé beaucoup n'avait rien de trop, et celui qui avait ramassé peu n'en manquait pas.

¹⁵ככתוב לא העדיף המרבה והממעיט לא החסיר׃

¹⁶But thanks be to God, who putteth the same earnest care for you into the heart of Titus.

¹⁶Grâces soient rendues à Dieu de ce qu'il a mis dans le coeur de Tite le même empressement pour vous;

¹⁶ותודות לאלהים הנותן גם בלב טיטוס לשקד עליכם בשקידה כזאת׃

¹⁷For he accepted indeed our exhortation; but being himself very earnest, he went forth unto you of his own accord.

¹⁷car il a accueilli notre demande, et c'est avec un nouveau zèle et de son plein gré qu'il part pour aller chez vous.

¹⁷כי שמע לבקשתנו ובשקידתו היתרה הלך אליכם מרצון נפשו׃

¹⁸And we have sent together with him the brother whose praise in the gospel [is spread] through all the churches;

¹⁸Nous envoyons avec lui le frère dont la louange en ce qui concerne l'Evangile est répandue dans toutes les Eglises,

¹⁸ועמו יחדו שלחנו האח אשר יצא שבחו בבשורה בכל הקהלות׃

¹⁹and not only so, but who was also appointed by the churches to travel with us in [the matter of] this grace, which is ministered by us to the glory of the Lord, and [to show] our readiness:

¹⁹et qui, de plus, a été choisi par les Eglises pour être notre compagnon de voyage dans cette oeuvre de bienfaisance, que nous accomplissons à la gloire du Seigneur même et en témoignage de notre bonne volonté.

¹⁹ומלבד זאת גם נבחר הוא מאת הקהלות ללכת אתנו להביא החסד הזה הגבוי על ידינו לכבוד האדון ולאמץ לבבכם׃

²⁰Avoiding this, that any man should blame us in [the matter of] this bounty which is ministered by us:

²⁰Nous agissons ainsi, afin que personne ne nous blâme au sujet de cette abondante collecte, à laquelle nous donnons nos soins;

²⁰ונשמר בזאת שלא יוציא איש עלינו דבה רעה בשפעת המתנה הזאת הגבויה על ידינו׃

²¹for we take thought for things honorable, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.

²¹car nous recherchons ce qui est bien, non seulement devant le Seigneur, mais aussi devant les hommes.

²¹כי משגיחים אנחנו על הטוב לא לפני האדון לבד כי גם לפני האדם׃

²²and we have sent with them our brother, whom we have many times proved earnest in many things, but now much more earnest, by reason of the great confidence which [he hath] in you.

²²Nous envoyons avec eux notre frère, dont nous avons souvent éprouvé le zèle dans beaucoup d'occasions, et qui en montre plus encore cette fois à cause de sa grande confiance en vous.

²²ונשלח עמהם את אחינו אשר בחנו את שקידתו פעמים רבות בדברים הרבה ועתה הוא שקוד עוד יותר בגדל בטחונו עליכם׃

²³Whether [any inquire] about Titus, [he is] my partner and [my] fellow-worker to you-ward, or our brethren, [they are] the messengers of the churches, [they are] the glory of Christ.

²³Ainsi, pour ce qui est de Tite, il est notre associé et notre compagnon d'oeuvre auprès de vous; et pour ce qui est de nos frères, ils sont les envoyés des Eglises, la gloire de Christ.

²³אם לטיטוס הנה חברי הוא ועזרי בכם ואם לאחינו הנה שלוחי הקהלות הם ותפארת המשיח׃

²⁴Show ye therefore unto them in the face of the churches the proof of your love, and of our glorying on your behalf.

²⁴Donnez-leur donc, à la face des Eglises, la preuve de votre charité, et montrez-leur que nous avons sujet de nous glorifier de vous.

²⁴על כן הראו והוכיחו להם לפני הקהלות את אהבתכם ואת תהלתנו עליכם׃
